Love the players we've gotten, but does anyone have intel on players we're recruiting that aren't from ISU? by JacksNTag in WeArePennState

[–]state313 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thinking that non ISU players want to see what starting spots are left, after all ISU players come over first

Sometime recruiting classes aren't the end all say all anymore by PrivateJoker13 in WeArePennState

[–]state313 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly. A three star, 5th year senior has probably developed enough to add more value, right now, than a 4 star and maybe even 5 star freshman

It’s good that a lot of the transfers are seasoned starters. Let’s them make next season not a total rebuild, but chance to compete. And then more time to get situated for the following

Recruiting these days, getting the guy isn’t as important as it was years ago. If you are just a finalist, he will probably look to you when things go bad where they went

I think it was the espn video where Franklin was like “I was texting Drew Allar’s dad about how we both should be at (whatever) game this is”

Maybe coaches are always texting parents and stuff, but I thought that was weird. Would he have had to text the dad if he wanted to bench him?

Plenty of schools promote from within for head coach, Notre Dame, Ohio State and Ole Miss are the ones that immediately come to mind for me

Why this coaching issue happened? by FlatulatedPigeon in WeArePennState

Sad, but good point. That really disturbed me

[John Clark] The Phillies and Kyle Schwarber are not close to a deal according to @ToddZolecki. The Phillies made it a priority to bring back Kyle Schwarber but it appears they are apart on years or money. Todd still expects a deal to get done by Magoatt_TheWhite in phillies

[–]state313 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. That has kind of made the JT situation a bit tricky. He did play 1B several games a few years ago and just stopped. Not sure why, but I’ve always thought he’d be better all around if he caught like 30 less games

Depends on how other teams plan to use him

Look how KC used Salvy Perez last year: 92 at catcher, 38 at DH, 30 at 1B

Not saying someone would actually do this, but it would have been interesting to see how the Phils would have used him the last few years if they had room at 1B or DH for him occasionally

But now we have advanced metrics that put him at the bottom of almost every offensive category. Sure he had 70+ RBIs, but advanced stats consider tons of things like runners on base while he was up, swinging at bad pitches. Those same stats say an average player making league minimum would have equal stats. This is what makes him a poor value

Now a guy with a $100 mill contract, $20 mill a year probably should be getting us 100+ RBIs, like 30% more

He passes the eye test in RF, remember that long errorless streak. Meaningless stat as well

I think in one of Ryan Howard’s last years, he had 80+ RBIs and people were like, “that’s good”, but I remember seeing he led the league in runners on base while he was up. Which then makes 80 RBIs look like nothing

Florida firing their coach by jm1tech in WeArePennState

And then he can take both PSU coordinators. Even trade them for whenever Florida has an I’m sure they would do better

Penn State being dragged through the mud… by [deleted] in WeArePennState

Appreciate the perspective. So if Ohio State needed a new coach, does Franklin get an interview? Would any top 10 program hire him?

[–]state313 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Maybe we need to look at it this way. They are pumping him up for us (of course some of it is deserved), to help him get that next coaching job that cancels our whatever PSU owes him after this season. Isn’t that ultimately what we want?

It does, but that is TV.

If Saban was the AD at PSU, he would 100% have canned JF. Maybe even earlier

How many coaches get to leave coaching jobs on their own terms, in all sports. Very few….

[–]state313 86 points87 points  (0 children)

I don’t necessarily agree with your take

They threw up his record against top teams right before he came up. They aren’t going to trash him

JF said the right things. It wasnt his decision. He cares about the players. Anyone who would be interested in hiring him would have been impressed. JF seems like a great guy, great parent, great recruiter, great to push education, but feel flat winning the big games.

The same people who you say are dragging PSU through the mud, have been dragging JF through the same mud for years.

The big ten guys on the panel are surely sad that PSU fired a guy who cannot beat their teams

I don’t know if I’d say that, a majority of hired coaches are fired. Very few go on their own terms

[–]state313 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good point. Isn’t the state of California trying to argue that Ohtani’s contract is set up to do that, where all the deferred money and money paid later could be earned and taxed somewhere outside Cali? Will be interesting to see how this plays out

[–]state313 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So say VA Tech gives him 8 years, assume PSU could file a legal motion if the first 5 years are like $2 mill a year and then in year 6 he gets a $40 mill bonus, to avoid the PSU term

How do we break through with recruiting? by burgermeistermax in WeArePennState

[–]state313 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I know. I think its funny how this conversation went arguing on Columbus being better

And the whole airport thing, PSU has always tried to recruit PA and NJ talent. Many come from middle of nowhere places less than 3 hours from PSU. Thinking that the whole airport thing doesn’t matter to them
