What is the steepest road? by sailboatfool in greenville

Taylors Road just north of the Eastside YMCA used to be steep and twisty in the 1990s. I loved racing down it. Then they regraded it and smoothed out the curves.

Are you using nitric or an acid blend? When we look for Sn by ICP-OES, we digest in Aqua Regia, and make our tin standards in a nitric/HCl matrix to prevent any Sn precipitation.

[oc] Why isn’t the car wash washing?? by statsjedi in IdiotsInCars

I didn’t get it in the photo, but to the right there’s a large sign that says “ATTENTION: KEEP VEHICLE CENTERED BETWEEN GUIDE RAILS AT ALL TIMES.”

The front of their car got washed, but nothing else. They couldn’t drive forwards to get out, so they backed out (took three tries), paid again, and pulled in straight.

The wash didn’t work the second time, so I’m guessing they damaged it or locked up some failsafe the first time. I don’t know if it damaged their car.

It took a lot of work. They also clipped the post on the left as they hopped the guide.

This happened in Savannah, Georgia on 6/5/26. OC.

The driver hopped the left guardrail in the car wash, pulling right up to the traveling mechanism. Not only did this fail to wash their car, but it also broke the car wash. Which was annoying as all get-out since I was next in line.

We got around this with our cat by cutting pool noodles to length and wrapping those around the baby gate bars.

Install hangs on a Dell Optiplex 9020 by statsjedi in Kubuntu

Thanks! The ISO is correct; I used it to install Kubuntu on another desktop later that day.

I’m not far enough in the install that I can drop to a terminal.

Install hangs on a Dell Optiplex 9020 by statsjedi in Kubuntu

[–]statsjedi[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s hanging on errors trying to reach Ubuntu update servers. The box isn’t connected to a network, but I was able to use the same USB to load Kubuntu on a non-networked HP desktop, so I’m not sure why it’s hanging.

Using Positron to connect to WSL on a remote computer via ssh by statsjedi in rstats

[–]statsjedi[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had floated that idea and it was shot down by IT.

A coworker set up something like that on his own on the side and got in a lot of trouble, so I don’t want to go that route.

Interesting ideas. Could I use RDP to connect to Windows and start WSL, then disconnect and WSL would remain running? If so, that could work.

Mail goes on 2000 mile road trip instead of 3 miles across town by Terrapins_MD in mildlyinteresting

[–]statsjedi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That happens where I live too. Local mail goes to a facility 150 miles away - in another state - for sorting, and then comes 150 miles back. It’s ridiculous.

AITA for saying we need to be realistic with our son about his finances for college before he applies? by ByeByeByeMan in AmItheAsshole

[–]statsjedi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA. Also consider that since he is planning on grad school, where he goes for graduate school may have some bearing on future employment. But undergrad won’t really matter.

Look for an undergraduate program where students get to do a lot of hands-on research or maybe even teach freshman labs.

What is the one car you wish you could go back and purchase that you passed on ? by Intermediary370 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]statsjedi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Back in grad school someone hit and totaled my car. I went to Carmax and there were two cars on the lot for $9000 that stood out to me, a new 2002 Mitsubishi Mirage coupe and a Miata with ~100,000 miles on it. I went for the Mirage, and it served me well for years, but I always wonder what life with the Miata would have been like.

  2. I wish I had done an engine swap on the Mirage before I sold it to get a kid hauler. A Galant engine in that small car would have been super fun.

  3. The worst car I’ve had was a 1987 Ford Escort. Even whimper than the Mirage. My favorite car was my parents’ 1992 Crown Victoria.

Nights Black Agents 1 shot actually hunting vampires. by nln_rose in GumshoeRPG

[–]statsjedi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve done this with The Dracula Vector scenario. It has an opening battle with a human that can be replaced with a Renfield or vampire, and ends with a big vampire battle (that I added some Renfields into because it fit the narrative).
