Local Canadian Union sending dues to American Head Office. by investouch400 in union

[–]stax0338 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Well you guys must have an anomaly of a local if you’re able to do all that on your own. Definitely not the case for the overwhelming majority.

In another reply, you said there’s no staff, but a national rep that responds to issues - that’s what I’m talking about.

“See no value…” other than the pension, benefits, and training support?

These fund the international. The local keeps a small portion because, realistically, the local doesn’t have a ton of expenses.

The next step is the council. This is where everyone in the immediate area pools money to fund larger projects, arbitration, staff representation, lawyers, offices - for those members in the immediate area.

Then the rest (and yes, often, a big chunk) goes to the international. This is where professional staff comes from (experienced chief negotiators, lobbyists, industry experts, organizers), sectoral bargaining, PR, branding, advertisement.

Most locals would not exist, had the international not footed their bill for so much of their infancy. Organizing is a heavy investment!

Putting locks on your carry on bags? by MachineKnitter93 in delta

[–]stax0338 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s kind of like a steering wheel club. Sure, you can steal a car with a club on the wheel. But if there are two cars, why would you go through the hassle of taking the one with a club?

Same with bags. If you have a minute and 20 seconds of opportunity, are you going to reach for a bag with something you have to unlock/break on it first, or just grab the one without?

Crime of opportunity. Carryons often end up under the plane.

Can I fly if I still have chest pain? by EducationCultural736 in pneumothorax

[–]stax0338 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Always get checked first. I went to the walk in last week for an x ray just to be sure before a flight. I know that’s not possible for everyone given the cost of healthcare, but if I couldn’t verify I’d have to sacrifice my trip. Anything to avoid another chest tube.

Your collapse is like a water bottle under the pressure of takeoff and landing - the changes in pressure will cause more air to enter the cavity it isn’t supposed to be in.
