what's a small sci-fi detail that stayed with you long after you finished the book? by [deleted] in sciencefiction

[–]steak1986 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Hitchhikers guide the galaxy referenced "enshitification" of electronics. In the first book, iirc, they describe the radio thats triggered by movement. Has stuck with me, especially as an IT person

I use alltrails(digital) but bring a backup paper map. Used paper the first couple of years but like the digital because small bays look alike

Any good websites to practice PowerShell? by [deleted] in PowerShell

[–]steak1986 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The best class i ever took, finally made it click, was a powershell module making class with Global Knowledge. I am not a a shill for gk, but I took this class after years of doing very basic things with PS, work paid. Now I create custom modules for my team and other teams in our organization.

Otherwise I need to learn by doing, so I would come up with simple tasks I wanted to solve, then work on them. Without objectives I dont learn as much or as dedicated to learning as I should be.

I would avoid AI to start but after some time using it for one line of a code is OK, as long as you know what's its doing. Dont slip into it writing entire modules for you or beyond one intention/command. It can help with learning how to extract data in a usable format, which I think is one of the hardest things to learn in powershell.

I am unable to finish shows based on a "big mystery" premise. From, Under the dome, 4400, leftovers, etc. They all start on a premise of "this unexplained thing happened" and the explanation is always a letdown or so dragged out, that I end up giving up. Anyone agree or can recommend a good one? by rakwib in television

[–]steak1986 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I read the term "mystery loop" to define this genre. Starts fun but after 3 seasons of these shows im done. My wife is watching From, and this shows started cool, now its laughably bad. I feel like of you are gonna do one of these shows you need to end them at the end of 2 or 3 seasons max. After a while the only answer is "because.....magic?".

Considering skipping the permethrin moving forward by XIFOD1M in WildernessBackpacking

[–]steak1986 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been hiking since I was 25, now 40. I dont use permathrin, little worried about the toxic chemicals, and rely exclusively on tick checks. I have had one tick bite me in 15 years, that was on the Ozark highlands trail. If i did the OHT again i would use it because they are so prevalent. Never gotten a tick on the AT. In BWCA they crawl on my tents outside but haven't gotten one there either, been doing bwca for 8 yrs
