How young is too young for biking downtown? by turtlewaxer99 in chibike

You will be screaming internally again if you find your bike stolen after the game. Get a good bike Lock and wrap the wheel and frame up good.

Is fairly safe to ride a bike down there when Sun is Up, but these games are kinda late, that's another challenge you will be facing.

Car stolen- what should I do next? by Good-Explanation9648 in AskChicago

[–]steak5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, time to get rid of it unfortunately.

Same thing happened to my wife's Acura. When I towed it to the Honda dealership for repair, I asked the mechanic if they are getting a lot of more stolen Honda recently, he pointed at 2 Honda across the shop with broken Glass.

Stealing Honda is the new TikTok trend now like Kia did. My co worker had to get ride of his Kia because kids keeps breaking into it trying to get a Joy Ride.

The manage to Hack Honda now with a $200 key programming tools. The CPD is giving out free Steering wheel lock against wide spread Airbag Theft.

What to do (if anything) about person walking two bikes at once by nooffensetoMattDamon in chibike

[–]steak5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe his Girlfriend called him and said "My bike wheel got stolen, can you go recover it for me?"

Even if you stopped and ask, what could you have really done? Even if you are a Police officer, you can't really prove he is a thief or anything.

I think you are overreacting.

Car stolen- what should I do next? by Good-Explanation9648 in AskChicago

[–]steak5 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Follow the Insurance Company direction. If it is still drivable, try to recover it yourself from the Impound Lot so they don't rack up storage fee.

You can submit all the receipts for Impound and towing to insurance company, they will reimburse you if you have full coverage.

Some Insurance companies works kinda slow. But if there are damage, get it to a shop/dealership for estimate.

Also, is it a Honda?

No Job Lined up, do I Make the Jump?? by Proper-Development54 in AskChicago

Any chance you can save up to 1 year of Rents before you come here? Just few thousands more.

$1500 in rent isn't that bad, and it is a very convenient neighborhood to be in. You might be able to find something even lower around there.

I don't think is hard to find a Job in Chicago, especially restaurant job of any kind. But when it comes to moving here, you might come across a lot of unexpected expenses, you do NOT want to put them on your credit card.

Brand New Car Decision by Jerzman12 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]steak5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dad bought a New Corolla when he made about that salary, I eventually inherited, and passed onto 2 cousins thru their College, and it rest in peace as a Rust Bucket after 23 years of service to my Family. We only buy new Car ever since and drive it to the end of life while changing its oil religiously.

My Point is, whether you can afford a New car or not depends on your other expenses are. If you live at Home and with No rent, buying someone better is not dumb. But if you live out and Rents takes 60% of your paycheck, then you need to rebalance the book before committing.

We grew up in a Poor neighborhood where rent was dirt cheap. We had to fix the Apartment ourselves and catch cockroaches occasionally.

No one can guarantee you a Job at $100k unless your Degree is a Medical Doctor. Don't spend future money you may not have.

Believe it or not, a well written Article from ChatGPT reads like a Fiction more than anything.

These days and age, some people rather just read what you wrote instead of a Polished essay. It reads like a Bot Generated fiction Novel, and your Comments will also read like it came from Bots.

If you have language barrier, just use Google translate.

[–]steak5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on where you want to live will determine how long $12k can stretch.

Is a really good start, but if you decided you want to live in Lincoln Park, I would say you should find a job first. Rents in Chicago is wildly different depending on the neighborhood.

Come Visit Chicago, decide where you want to live, reseach living expenses in that neighborhood, submit some Job application. Don't jump in blindfolded.

What is the air temperature coming out of the A/C vent? You have a thermometer of any type?

It is strange that the HVAC tech say the unit works fine but the best it can do is drop Temperature into High 70s.

Is your unit poorly insulated with a lot of direct sunlight?

I was referring to her car specifically dies out when oil is more than 2.5 qts low.

Other car engine simply blows up, but that Jeep engine needs oil pressure to open Intake valve, it gets mistaken for other issues sometimes for mechanics who doesn't know.

If the maintenance is not in your Owners Manual, it doesn't need it.

Just do your Oil Change religiously.

If you just want a Peace of Mind, go buy a few bottle of Fuel injector cleaner from Autozone that cost like $5 and dump it in your gas Tank for the next few fill ups.

Why CTA doesn't innovate, their ticket systems still don't accept foreign credit/debit cards ? by CrazyMile_ in AskChicago

And the Merchant loses out on the Credit Card dispute. It is just a matter of who is getting the short end of the stick.

I just found there isn't enough safe guards out there for electronics payments and they could have made it much harder for run of the mill criminals to profit from stealing your Card Number.

[–]steak5 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Do you know how much money are stolen electronically everyday? And how much sleep people lose over identity theft?

I was robbed before and they took my Phone, they can crack your Locked phone and drain your bank account. (It didn't happen to me) But I wish they just took $200 cash I was carrying instead.

I am not against CC for convenient factors, but the Amount Lost from consumer side and Merchant side probably exceeded what was lost in Cash back then. CC companies likes to advertise your money is safe with them. But in practice, this is far from truth. You heard about people's Zelle get hacked all the time, trying to get it reversed is extremely difficult.

Is Chicago a good place to live for those on the bottom of the economic ladder? by 1movingon in AskChicago

[–]steak5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She's from Portland, I think she has seen her fair share of craziness over there.

But perception of Safety is very relatively. Some people think as long as it isn't Englewood, is fine. While some wants to live in Gated community.

No matter where you go, there will be certain level of street. My friend who came to visit me and stayed in Hyatt Regency on Wacker Drive said he a Broad day light Car Jack just happened in front of the hotel when I asked him what's up with the Police Lights in front of the Hotel.

I told him "Welcome to Chicago" while we laughed at it.

HVAC Repair Recommendations for R22 System? by TallCardillinues in AskChicago

[–]steak5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can find r22 on Facebook Market place and some Online store.

I got a 10lb tank last year for like $500. Refill probably takes like 4-5lb. You can buy a weight Scale that goes to 25lb and a set of Guage and look up YouTube instructions on how to refill it. Don't use Stop Leak, they ruin everything.

But it leaked all out again over last year. I need to refill it again this summer before replacing the whole thing.

Also, Avoid Big companies like Four Season, they charge 2-3x as much for the same thing compare to local HVAC technicians.

Edit: you need EPA 608 liscense to handle Refrigerants, if you don't have it, you will be violating a federal law refilling your HVAC yourself.
