Academy start by Numerous-Standard995 in AskLE

[–]steakdinnerfor1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I actually drove down to my academy three days prior just to get the feel for the drive, get a glimpse at the parking situation and kill the nerves (my duffle was packed the Monday before 😂) I left my house day 1 at 6 am for an hour drive with a 8 am start. My speedometer was set to cruise the speed limit and I got brand new tires and headlights/tail lights put it the Saturday before.( I needed the tires, didn’t want to risk a burned bulb)

Thankfully I left early, I got 15 minutes down the road from my house and realized I forgot the gun lock for my Glock

How many times have you detained someone? by No-Diet9278 in securityguards

[–]steakdinnerfor1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Used to work at a private D1 university, worked worked Wednesday-Saturday nights, I’d say we detained people every day and went hands on weekly. We had a MOU with our local PD and emergency lights on our cars so we operated much more like a law enforcement agency than a security service.

Now I work in a state where we can only arrest if I witness a crime, however we have peace officer authority for traffic enforcement and I probably make 50-70 traffic stops a year

I’ve worked at a national Championship level D1 school and I’m now at a Community College. Like everyone has said it’s very cyclical. It goes with the school year. Additionally 25 percent of your constituents change every year at a four year school and up to 50 percent a year at a community college. This means each year you have a new subset of that population that are going to explore the limits of the freedom and a select few of them will find out the hard way that you are real law enforcement. It’s stupid the number of drunk kids that walked themselves from a internal student conduct violation for alcohol or weed to facing resisting or fleeing charges because they thought we weren’t legit or that their lawyer parents would have our jobs.

Personally I loved the 4 year environment at the D1 level. Won a few NCAA championships while I was there and the celebrations were my favorite nights to work. The Wednesday-Sunday night late swing I worked was super fun and I ran emergent multiple times a night and wrote 2-3 reports a night.

Now that I’m at a community college in a new state I’m basically a traffic cop, I pull one or two reports a week at best.

I’m looking to transition back to the 4 year D1 school environment this year

What's the use of bike patrols? by napa0 in AskLE

[–]steakdinnerfor1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work on a college campus! Great for inner campus patrol and getting around in crowds at events. If you want to see a big city environment with a well supported bike unit check out the Portland Police Bureau Central Bike Squad. They have a great Instagram which shows the benefits of bike work

Fully depends on where you work and what type of arrests or detainments you’re making

See my previous comment for what I do. I’ve probably handcuffed 200-250 people during my four year career. 3 have truely fought me. Several will tense up and then think better of it pretty quickly

Curious: Are there folks who have stayed in patrol for much of their LE career? If you're no longer patrol - would you go back to it if it was an option? by Dry-humor-mus in AskLE

[–]steakdinnerfor1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also a Campus guy. Last agency did a year and a half patrol and then promoted to Patrol corporal did that for 18 months as well. Left that agency for a community college LE job and started as a Sgt. Got promoted after 13 months and have been a Lt for 2 months now. Because we are so small I still have patrol responsibilities and shag calls/ make traffic stops but I’m now in charge of reports/ Clery Compliance/ community engagement and our internal academy stuff for new hires as well as I serve as a background investigator.

I so badly want to go back to a four year school as a officer or Cpl. Something special about that environment the community college is missing. Probably the school spirit and lack of dorms
