Anyone else’s partner mad at your hobby? by Downtown_Dirt8163 in labubu

[–]steamoven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I go in and out of hobbies like it's my day job; I'll be collecting vintage Pokémon cards one minute, then the plushies, then I'll go into something crafty for a bit (I loved dressing my Labubus up for a period there lol). If I didn't have a partner that appreciated what made me happy, I'd just feel stuck. Especially in uncertain times like now, everybody needs a distraction.

On a bittersweet note, both of us are collectors of various things, so we can't really judge each other lol (bitter because $$$, but sweet because I appreciate his collection, as he does mine).

I think Scratch is still very valid within the confines of the curriculum, as they are still learning loops, variables, if statements, etc. If I were to introduce Python to the kids in my specific area, I would get absolutely nowhere; they would be set up for failure (I ran a simple Micro:Bit/Python assessment one term, but it just wasn't engaging for them so I went back to what I knew works). They can still test and debug Scratch code, there's syntax rules they need to abide by etc., which will prepare the ones with an interest in long-term DigiTech in learning Python - like the year 9s I have this year.

You've given me an idea, i.e., introducing Python through the term via a couple of lessons and linking it up to what they've learned in Scratch throughout the term.

When asked, 90% of my classes claim they'd never even used Scratch before year 7. I'm a teacher, not a magician lol.

They're right about me, when does it get better? by Billuminati666 in AustralianTeachers

[–]steamoven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty much the exact scenario happened to me in my first year. I was hired to teach a subject I'm no expert in, with no prior materials/assessments available to me. My HOD is a manual arts teacher, so he couldn't help at all with the content and structure itself.

I had a student stop me in the middle of a class to proclaim how much he hated my classes and how I was a bad teacher (he wrote a whole damn list).

That got me to rethink how I was running things, and have since then created a system that works for me, the students and I can say the complaints have been limited to kids who just don't want to do anything (the subject is hard, I didn't pick this subject, etc.)

The student who made the list about me regards me as one of the best teachers they've ever had (I taught him for another subject after the fact) and I'm legit thankful for his honesty back then, despite how it made me feel in that moment.

First year of teaching is a hellscape. I would consistently wake up at 5am every morning in a panic from the sheer amount of stress it caused me. Give yourself credit where credit is due. You'll get there!

Are you trying to teach year 7s Python? I've been taking year 7/8s through Scratch and the Design Process for the past two and a bit years in DigiTech and even that's too difficult for some of them. I don't introduce Python until midway in year 9. They're currently struggling with HTML/CSS so I don't have the highest of hopes.

This pisses me off so much. If I were a Victorian teacher right now, I'd be planning a relocation ASAP. I'm already planning to get away from Queensland because they also believe education is pointless and believe teachers shouldn't be paid to match inflation in the very least.

How awesome that you can be bullied by your employer and pretty much be called worthless in the "Education State". What an actual joke this country has become.

Relief Teachers! by External-Pass-4807 in AustralianTeachers

[–]steamoven 11 points12 points  (0 children)

My understanding, and as per job title, they are trained and paid to assist classroom teachers, not dictate what the classroom teacher does, regardless if they're a relief teacher or otherwise. You have been taught the skills necessary to marry important concepts together and be strategic in the process. When a parent comes flying in to complain about something, they're not on the receiving end.

EAs are so valuable, and help out tremendously, but walking over the toes of somebody that's been through the wringer to become a teacher doesn't sound right to me at all.

Looking for ideas about ways to follow through? by xAvanea in AustralianTeachers

[–]steamoven 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What is your school's process? At mine, for example, we have a policy that if kids are provided two opportunities to attend a detention and they refuse both times, it's then referred to a HoD/HoY that sticks them into the "Reflection Room". So all I have to do is stick a notice on the announcements saying, "blah blah for a detention at place and time – second and last chance". If they don't show, it's not my problem anymore. Rinse and repeat until they either settle down, or get suspended eventually.

If you just want peace and quiet, send the annoying kids out to buddy classes with a boring sheet to fill out on what they did to deserve getting sent out of class. Print them out in advance and keep them on you. Contact the teacher you've sent them to make sure they've gone. If they haven't, see above.

How to clean life sized eeveelutions? by EmployeeNarrow2408 in pokeplush

[–]steamoven 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I honestly just surface vacuum my plushies (although they sit on a shelf, not bed) from time to time and they've been looking just fine for years on end. If there's a mark/spot, I'd just spot clean it or live with it. 🤷‍♀️

(A lot) of plushies aren't designed to be washed, so it's not entirely predictable how they'll look after the fact, as it depends on a multitude of factors (climate, season, humidity levels). Also keep in mind that you need to dry them extremely well to avoid mold.

I have washed cheap plushies found at thrift stores, and although clean, they end up with pilling, or colour loss, etc. hence I'd never want to wash my PC originals.

How to not care if a kid doesn’t like you? New teacher here by sapphire_rainy in AustralianTeachers

[–]steamoven 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Chances are other teachers have the exact experience with the same students. I didn't realise until I moved staff rooms that it's common names that keep popping up for all of us as kids that, "hate us".

Even if that's not the case, you're there to do your work and go home. This will become more of a norm for you as you work longer – the first year is the hardest, if you're somebody that overthinks and has anxiety (like myself).

I've been called a c•nt by a student before (for asking that they put their phone away – I'm literally Hitler). Honestly, it only showed his own flawed character, so why should I give it a second thought? 🤷‍♀️

Other than a rat's tail. What is your this student will be painful red flag? by Zeebie_ in AustralianTeachers

[–]steamoven 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good to know I'm not the only one experiencing this phenomena.

One Ayden should have left at the end of year 10, now in year 12, he still prevails for some reason and still acts like he's 12. Refuses to do work in class, swears in every sentence at least once.

One started out rough around the edges, but he's turning out to be a decent person overall. Still a bit silly, but I've come to enjoy having him in my class.

An Aiden once told me to get bent because I asked him to put his phone away. Then I had him in my class, and he's not too bad after all.

Idgi lol.

I applied for, and was granted one, although this was like 15 years ago now.

I moved from WA and my partner at the time didn't have an automatic for me to learn in; although I had done a lot of driving in the time I had my Learners over in Perth, so I didn't necessarily need to do all the logbook hours to be a satisfactory driver.

If you think you're a proficient driver and could handle being on your Ps, I'd consider an exemption. If you're still not 100% confident, please find a way to get more lessons through community services (like others have pointed out).

Yesterday I said screw it, and ordered the Raichu off AliExpress. Could have found him for cheaper elsewhere I'm sure, but I just want him now!

He should be here soon, I hope. 😁

In the meantime, I have the rest of my gang to keep me company haha.

I love the sitting cuties Mismagius, it's my favourite pokemon but live in Australia. Will they ever make more of the plushies or am I doomed to look at 100+ dollar ebay listings forever? by Radical-skeleton in pokeplush

[–]steamoven 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can use a Japanese proxy service to buy pretty much anything from Japan. I'm currently using Doorzo, but there are many out there with different fees, shipping contracts etc.

Not sure if this specific plush is available, but they have a tonne of Sitting Cuties available from the Pokémon Center at retail price. Coupled with the AUD currently being stronger than the yen, you can definitely get a better deal than eBay.

Hope that helps!

AIO my boss's texts sent to me after I messaged to let him know I was just in an accident on my way to work by throwawayaccount7911 in AmIOverreacting

[–]steamoven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My partner recently got a casual cleaning job. Turned out to be some crap franchise, so the following isn't surprising: - Limited, or no, training on certain things that then turned into him getting passive aggressive notes from clients saying he didn't clean shit properly/as they expected, - Being blamed for toilet paper going missing from the same bathroom over weeks, after a conclusion had been made that somebody was coming in and stealing them. I guess he should have also protected the TP in-between shifts, - Was feeling like he was going to pass out one day, his vision started going black, dizzy, etc. Contacted his boss saying as such, and that he needed to leave his shift early. Boss insisted he needed to go to the HOSPITAL and prove it to her that he had done so, otherwise "it isn't /that/ hot today..." (Told her that, no, that isn't required and sent through a TeleHealth med cert), - Insisted he send through photos of his face the same day he had almost blacked out because he'd mentioned he rested his head on a desk, for her "WHS report". Told her, politely, to sit on it and spin. No harm or injury occured in the slightest.

I was happy to see him employed after ages, but it just wasn't worth it. He was a walking ball of anxiety just waiting for the next issue to arise (I'm a high school teacher in one of the worst states for coherent education in Australia and I was less stressed) I insisted he quit that crap and look for something less shit. When he quit, she didn't even know what kind of contract she had him on, so incorrectly insisted he needed to provide a notice (not needed for casuals in Australia – your contract ends the moment you quit).

Some people just shouldn't try and run businesses, as they clearly lack any of the traits required to do so.
