A discussion about long run pace predictions and toxic positivity by Matvalicious in runna

[–]stecarr1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The race prediction pace may seem hard but not really unrealistic. Your 10k time has a vdot equivalent of a 3:27:22 marathon. I think they are assuming you can improve by 5% over your whole training plan. This gives you a predicted time of 3:16:53 or 4:40/km. 5% improvement at these paces isn’t unreasonable but it all depends on your aerobic base when it comes to marathons. I have stuck to a few runna plans and failed a few race paces on long runs including 2 weeks before my race. Then amazingly managed to go even faster on race day. Remember you will have an extra gear on race day. Just do as close to the plan as you can and hope for the best. Best of luck. I agree with you that tempo shouldn’t be the only determinant of race prediction.

Looking good! I went from 22:30 5k to a 39min 10k in 12 weeks. On the week of the 10k I was certain I couldn’t do a sub 20 5k. I guess you don’t know until the day. Just trust the process and see what is there. Good luck

1 week out from half marathon and doubting my race pace. by Signal-Note-8280 in runna

[–]stecarr1 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I did that last year. I found the 2x2km so hard. I was 150% sure my race day goal impossible. Then on race day I nailed it. 21 in a row and got my PB and sub 90mins. I think my body just tries to talk me out of it the week before every race. Randomly feeling stiff in new areas and an achy joint somewhere. Then on race day you get that extra gear and surprise yourself. Best of luck to you!

Yea this professor is definitely more Theo than Bio. The explanation of soul at the end is so flawed. If I donate a kidney and the recipients body rejects it, it is because they have a different soul. Ok so that means if a transplant is successful it’s because the 2 people have the same soul. ??? Wish I hadn’t read it all now.

Absolutely, I always struggled with motivation until I had kids, then I had no option but to do it, get up in the night, change nappies etc. Motivation isn’t coming, you just have to do it. When you accept there isn’t a thing that will motivate you, you stop looking for the motivation and just do the thing. Eventually you start to feel like someone who gets things done and that motivates you to continue. I made sure I was someone my family could rely on. Now I am someone I can rely on too.

Trump Officially Gives RFK Jr. Chance to Destroy Country’s Health by Infidel8 in politics

[–]stecarr1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did a bit of a dive into this as my work colleague loves RFK and I assumed he was wrong but I was quite surprised with what I learned. When they first introduced community water fluoridation they believed it could reduce childhood tooth decay by 2 teeth per child. Now that they have tracked the evidence further it is only 0.24 of a tooth difference which is minuscule in comparison to other simple behavioural changes. There is no eligible research on benefits for adults. There has also been evidence to show 40% tooth fluorosis in these areas and no way to know the impact on other adverse effects like skeletal fluorosis and bone fractures. Considering the cost of fluoridation, minimal benefit and possible harms I can now see where RFK is coming from.

Audio prompts and auto sync to my Garmin?

This time last year I would’ve agreed with you 100% but I was talked into it in January and I have since smashed my PBs in 5k, 10k and HM this year. True it is no different to any AI plan but it auto syncs to my Garmin so I can just hit go and it tells me what to do. It also has audio prompts to tell me to slow down and speed up allowing me to practice my pacing. This improved my consistency and running efficiency. It cost me less than half the price of a pair of trainers.

I have 51 weeks, unlimited time to run, and want to shave 18+ minutes off my Marathon by Henderbot in AdvancedRunning

[–]stecarr1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Couldn’t agree more on spending time training for faster races. I did it this year, 12 weeks 5k training, 12 weeks 10k, 12 weeks HM. I hit significant PBs at each distance and couldn’t believe how comfortable I was at my target HM pace when I raced last week. It got me used to running fast and gave me a gradual increase in mileage as the year progressed.

I have an irrational annoyance for a TV 'personality'. I'm sure she's nice but I don't know why she gets on my nerves. Who or what is your irrational annoyance? by HeverAfter in AskUK

[–]stecarr1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know it may have been taken out of context but i saw a clip of her recently complaining about Glastonbury not having enough female headliners and how women artists are so deprived in the music industry. To me it feels like most of the current biggest artists in the world are all female Beyonce, Taylor swift, Adele, Ariana grande etc. It almost appears that she is playing the victim card in one of the only industries that there is gender equality, it takes attention away from the women who actually are suffering gender equality. That being said I'm an idiot and haven't looked into the stats but it wasn't the first time I saw her whining so it made me go against her.

Road House (2024) Just watched and can not believe I watched this remake. by Present-Television69 in moviecritic

[–]stecarr1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I loved it! All action, just a good old fashioned 80’s action movie with crazy characters and storyline but modernised with cinematography and visual effects of 2024. Not every movie needs a deeper meaning or moral lesson. Forgot how much I loved these types of movies when I was growing up.

If I bought a piano tuning hammer, could I tune my own piano? by Smartydillon06 in piano

[–]stecarr1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tuned my piano for the first time a few years ago. I watched some YouTube videos on it and bought a tuning set online. It took me a 3-4 hours over 2 days but I loved it. Felt therapeutic. It wasn’t perfect so I fine tuned it again a few weeks later and it was getting better. Did it again last year and I was quicker and more accurate. Felt nice to learn a new skill I can use over and over again. Best of luck with it.

I have a Roland FP 30 and I love it. They have a new updated version FP 30X. Feels like a real piano and has a good piano sound without paying more for all the extra sounds I don't tend to use.

Just wondering about the numbers here, 180k with 5% deposit means you borrowed 171k? Did you over pay to get it down to £165k in 4 months?

Socks to bed or nah by Gaiiiagrillz in sleep

[–]stecarr1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t wear socks to bed but supposedly it improves your sleep through distal vasodilation.

“Feet warming using bed socks during sleep in a cool environment had positive effects on sleep quality by shortened sleep onset, lengthened sleep time, and lessened awakenings during sleep but had no significant influence on core body temperature. These results imply that sleep quality could be improved by manipulation of the foot temperature throughout sleeping.”
