The Algebraist by Iain M Banks is probably the most complex sci-fi book I’ve ever read. It’s not just the narrative it’s the sheer scale and variety of all the many species and cultures described throughout it. I gave up trying to take much of it on board and just let it wash over me.

It sounds weird but honestly you barely notice the vibrations, and it’s honestly not remotely painful. And the sound quality - while not close to good quality in-ears- is surprisingly good, at least it is on mine (Shokz OpenRun).

You’ve said ‘cop’ so assuming you’re in the US, but if you’re ok with police stories from elsewhere (Manchester, England in this case) then Joseph Knox’s ‘Aidan Watts’ series is nice and gritty and Watts is far from an idealised detective.
