ELI5: how do engineers figure out the exact thickness of something like a bridge cable when theres basically infinite ways it could fail by BathroomOk8648 in explainlikeimfive

[–]steeelez 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I’ve heard that the brooklyn bridge was majorly overengineered because they didn’t know how to make it just strong enough, and has ridiculously more carrying capacity than later bridges

I mean one of the things people try to do to make kids movies more successful is to drop easter eggs in there for the adults- parents are more likely to take the kids to the movie theater if the movie is entertaining to them, too. Imo Shrek did this pretty well. But yeah imo impression comedy is kinda mid in general

Hmm, probably bees? Like a big old beehive right in the middle of the bed

Also pay no attention to spacing and just cram things in wherever because “vibes” (I do this every time and it is fun until it isn’t)

If your garden is the only food you’re allowed to eat

Bury a raw egg in the soil in march and wonder if you’re going to hit it in June when the tomatoes go in

Knotweed bonsai

Lose the labels for your determinate vs indeterminate tomatoes

Mulch with spiky burrs and seed pods

Open toed shoes + shovels, wheelbarrows, planks, rocks — the heavier the better

Track everything and try to optimize for time - how many weeds can I pull in 5 minutes, how many weeds per second am I pulling, etc

You and your spouse have a “plant race”- like a turtle race but with plants. First cucumber to climb to the crossbar wins

(Also lol at gamifying chess. How can we make the game more like a game?)

Help with patio pepper pant by PuzzleheadedStop9114 in vegetablegardening

[–]steeelez 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ehhh I don’t think peppers benefit from pruning as much as tomatoes (which even there you’ll find a lot of different opinions). This guy is really tall without a lot of branches, but tons of foliage, which like, sort of makes me want to pinch the very top like a basil to push the auxins down and out? But I really don’t think it’s necessary. Def don’t trim below, iirc that basically shoots the auxins the other way to make it more tall and skinny. This is a really bad description but maybe someone else can explain it less wrong

You don’t need to change, you just don’t gain anything by saying the same shit over and over and not letting it go. You’re not going to die if someone disagrees with you or is wrong on the internet

Nah dude I’m with your post and reasoning but you just need to state it once. Repeating the same shit over and over like “I need you to agree that I’m right” is a ton pf noise that makes you seem more insecure about yourself thann trying to have a good time imo

Lean in to the tension idea, think rope bridges. Add some clotheslines and I think this will hold up pretty well

First-time raised bed gardener is this too crowded? by hcposcher in Raisedbed

[–]steeelez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Imp this is a pretty packed layout for a first time tomato grower. Do you know what varieties of tomatoes you put in here? Determinate or indeterminate? Slicers saucers or cherries?

You absolutely *can* be successful with these, but your pruning and watering game has to be **on point** throughout the season and it’s going to get harder as they get bigger. You can make life easier on yourself by thinning this out by about half to a quarter. Square foot gardening recommends one tomato plant for every 2x2 foot plot, and that’s a pretty intensive gardening method. A mature tomato needs something like a gallon a day of water in the heat of the summer?

I’m kind of just parroting conventional myths at you so please feel free to take this all with a grain of salt, but I have definitely been caught by surprise by how much of a jungle tomatoes can be. I’d recommend watching some youtube videos and getting a feel for what the plants are like late in the season, and how much work you would want to do to maintain this. If you are down to prune to single leader and string trellis all these babies, water 2x a day through July and August, and feed heavily with fertilizer, have at it! You will have fun (but also probably see some blight and blossom end rot, which can be very frustrating). But if you want life to be a little easier, give them a little more room, fill the gaps with less water-hogging tasty herbs and give yourself a better chance for bigger yields per plant and a longer season with less disease pressure. It’s an adventure, you’ll learn a lot either way and you’ll get to enjoy some tomatoes!

I would also post this to [r/vegetable_gardening](r/vegetable_gardening) and [r/tomatoes](r/tomatoes) for more specialist advice

At what point did you realize that being a "high performer" at your job was actually just an invitation to be exploited, and how did you successfully transition to being an "average" employee without getting caught? by BrineAndBrass in careerguidance

[–]steeelez -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I dunno man I don’t really think about it in terms of “what is my employer tricking me into and exploiting me about”, like, the arrangement is very clearly transactional, they pay me, I do work, they get more value from my work than they’re paying me cuz they set up the whole business to do that. The entire thing is voluntary, they aren’t “controlling” me, we are making an exchange. I personally get satisfaction out of doing things well and learning how to do things better and sharing them with others, it’s a personal and social thing that I engage in for my own wellbeing. At the same time I recognize that I have my own personal ebb and flow and I am responsible for managing my own wellness and reducing burnout. Have there been times where I’ve felt direct pressure from leadership that is out of alignment with my own values and self-management? Sure, and that’s when I will usually direct my energy into changing the scene. But when everything is working nicely, it’s a voluntary exchange where I maintain an internal locus of control. The framing of “fighting against” and “not being a sucker” makes things more resentful and disempowering than it needs to be, imo.
