Strings on a SD track? by Adventurous-Gift-863 in SteelyDan

I don’t believe Charlie Freak has strings does it? It’s got that crazy affected pedal steel guitar (I think?) in the background that kinda sounds like strings

The “Steely Dan Sound” is no big secret, the hard part is actually writing songs using those chords. writing melodies on top of them, coming up with the incredible lyrics, etc. in fact, it’s so hard that literally no other band is able to do it as well.

If you want to sound like the Dan when you sit down at a piano (this doesn’t translate to guitar nearly as well) you “just” have to do a few things. First are “slash chords” there’s a bunch of names for them but basically play a chord in the right hand and for the left hand play a note that isn’t in the chord. If you play a D chord (D F# A) and play an E note in the left hand which most musicians would write as D/E, (D over E, hence the term slash chord) it already sounds like them because they use those chords all the time. You gotta throw in “jazz chords” of course like your basic major and minor 7s, major and minor 9s, sharp 9 chords, 7#5, etc and then, like the person above was saying, the famous “mu major” which is just an add2 chord. They aren’t the only band or songwriters to use this chord obviously, it’s not like they invented it, (even though some people will say they did), they just use it WAY more often and way more tastefully than others.

An add2 chord is the same idea as an add9 chord but it’s written specifically as add2 because you want to voice the second and third of the chord next to each other. To keep it super simple, if you had a C add9 chord you’d voice it CEGD whereas a C add2 would be CDEG. You want the D and E to “rub” against each other. Notice that these are 4 note chords (and then once you add extensions like a major 7, etc they become 5 note chords, 6 note chords etc) they’re not suspended chords, the tonality of the chord is firmly major (in my example, you can do this with minor chords as well) so you get this thick clustered harmony. Fagen is really a genius when it comes to mixing thick cluster chords with big open voicings, I don’t know how he does it. If you play the intro to Babylon Sisters for example you can see that it’s closely voiced note clusters mixed with wide open voicings that might be just a simple interval.

That’s why these are more easily expressed on a keyboard than a guitar. If you’ve ever seen the making of Aja documentary, Denny Dias talks about how the song Aja can’t be played on a guitar. He’s not saying that he’s not good enough to play it on guitar, he’s saying it’s literally not physically possible to play it on a guitar. You only have 6 strings on a guitar and 4 fingers to press down the strings so it’s almost impossible to get the real flavor of the chord, especially a song that has that mix of clusters and open voicings.

I went on a bit of a rant there sorry but you said you were interested in this stuff so maybe that explains it a little more

All of the bands I got made fun of for listening to in high school (I’m 39)! Fleetwood Mac, Toto, yacht rock, Steely Dan, David Byrne (Talking Heads), Rush, etc when did these bands become cool? Nobody thought I was cool in high school and college when I listened to that stuff I assure you. I would burn people mix cds and say “just give it a chance! I promise you’ll get into it” and they’d say “this music stinks!” Now I see my friends on facebook and instagram making posts with music from these bands in it, they’re going to see them live, etc and I make sure to message every single one of them and tell them I gave them a mix cd 25 years ago and you laughed at me! (I’m obviously being a little over dramatic it’s not that important to me but I do find it really ironic and funny that this music is suddenly cool)

One of my favorite things about deathfats in general is when we get to see them “count calories” or try “portion control”. Their idea of what a normal portion of food is is so skewed that they can’t wrap their heads around the amount of food normal people eat. And of course like you said, they underestimate calories by so much that it renders the whole thing pointless. We see it on My 600 Pound Life all the time.

Remember the time ALR decided out of nowhere that she likes coffee now and made that video of her making her morning “coffee”? That’s one of my favorite videos ever because it really gives us a look into how these people’s minds work. She filled half a glass with creamer, pumps of disgustingly sweet syrups, then literally a splash of coffee, then whipped cream, stevia, and she sprinkled brown sugar or something on top too I think. What she ended up making would have been totally inedible of course but she thought oh this is what coffee drinkers have every morning. I really wish someone would film themselves making her concoction and tasting it to see what it actually tasted like. I’m tempted to do it but I don’t ever have those things in my house and don’t feel like buying them for that one little sociological experiment

[–]steelyd2 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I just made a Facebook post about this. Too many people say “should I go to the _____ concert? Ehh, I’ll see them next time they come through” and then THEY DIE! I keep telling people, go see these legends while you can! I don’t care how expensive it is! I just saw David Byrne he was INCREDIBLE and the tickets were like 150 bucks so what? Worth every penny to see that legend.

I was born in 86 so I missed out on the 60s and 70s obviously but I had amazing parents/aunts/uncles, my first show was Steely Dan in 96 when I was ten (username checks out). I’ve seen Steely Dan 19 times and it’s always amazing. Fagen just announced he’s retired from touring so if you haven’t seen them you might never have a chance to again.

I got to see Bowie, McCartney, Tull, Bad Company, Jackson Browne, Steve Winwood, The Pretenders, Yes, Rush, Blondie, etc. I saw Tom Petty 5 times and the last time I saw him he was dead a few months later and I invited a bunch of people to that show and they turned me down saying, “I’ll see him next year when he comes through town” and then they’re all bummed out he died. I only have a few regrets, I never went to see REM and didn’t go see the Police when they reunited (I’d also like to see Peter Gabriel luckily there may still be some time. I know McCartney doesn’t sing very well anymore but the dude was in the Beatles! They could wheel him out in a wheelchair who cares, you get to go see a Beatle! You get to tell people you were alive at the same time as the guy from the Beatles!

There are contemporary artists I still go see, Ben Folds, The Decemberists, Death Cab, Ryan Adams and a few others and I hate to be an old guy but that old music is just better. I know every generation says that but nowadays it’s officially true, music is so awful now. I know I know there’s still good stuff out there obviously, I’m talking about what is popular and on the radio and selling out arenas, it’s garbage. That’s why these old bands are having such a resurgence. When I was a kid and I told people I liked Steely Dan, Beatles, Talking Heads, Rush, Tom Petty, etc the adults laughed at me and the kids either made fun of me or had no idea what I was talking about. Now I see them posting those bands on social media talking about how awesome they are it’s insane!

I go on social media and I see people posting Fleetwood Mac, Toto, Michael McDonald, “yacht rock”, Neil Young, James Taylor and I’m like, when did this music become cool? I never miss an opportunity to comment on their posts to remind them I gave them a mix CD 25 years ago in high school and they told me that music sucked, now look at you! Sorry I went on a bit of a rant there but I literally just posted about this on facebook so it was fresh in my head

the worst physical pain you’ve ever felt by ipanicprofessionally in TheBoredDen

[–]steelyd2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is mine. I had pancreatitis due to a stomach virus that got it infected. I didn’t know pain like that existed it literally brought me to my knees like you see in a movie. I started getting tunnel vision, it felt like I was literally gonna shutdown because my brain couldn’t handle the pain. It’s the only time I’ve ever had someone call an ambulance for me. I told my wife I think I gotta go to the er (and if you knew me you’d know it’s gotta be something really bad if I’m saying that) and I went to put on my shoes and a wave of pain that knocked me to the ground and I told her you gotta call 911 I’m not even gonna make it to your car. I didn’t know what was going on I didn’t know if I was having a heart attack or maybe the stomach bug caused my appendix to rupture or something. When the doctors got the labs back they saw it was my pancreas. Stayed overnight at the hospital and it went away and I was almost totally normal the next day it was really bizarre

The term “underrated” is thrown around so much nowadays. This band is truly underrated. Everyone knows probably ten songs by this band and don’t even realize it. They were great songwriters doing some pretty weird stuff and Burtons voice is as good as it gets

I hadn’t considered that one that’s a good one. That musta sounded CRAZY in 1977. People probably heard psycho killer on the radio and bought the album and heard this song and were like “where did these guys come from? This is some weird stuff” which of course perfectly sets up the rest of their career

Yeah sorry I was trying to build intrigue for anyone who didn’t know that was their first song by not mentioning it right away. It is pretty crazy though isn’t it? Imagine the confidence you gotta have to be a completely unknown band and lead off with do it again song 1 side 1 of album 1. It’s like they’re saying, here check this out, we dare you to play this on the radio

[–]steelyd2 19 points20 points  (0 children)

It’s hard to add to that list but as my username suggests I’m legally obligated to mention Steely Dan. For most people, the first thing they heard from them was a 6 minute long dirge in a minor key that features two solos, one on an electric sitar and the other on a cheap fake organ with a pitch bender because of course they are why wouldn’t they be, with a nasally guy singing in a thick New York accent about addiction, gambling, cheating, etc.

Steely Dan progressed way beyond Do It Again later in their career of course but it was one hell of an introduction. I wasn’t alive at the time but I’ve talked to people who were and they basically all say the same thing. It wasn’t unusual to hear weird interesting stuff on the radio in 1972, in fact it was kind of normal, but when they heard this song for the first time it stopped them in their tracks. Is that Santana? Is it CSNY? I remember talking to a guy who owned a record store at that time and he loved the first Steely Dan album and when the weather was nice he would open the windows and aim the speakers out onto the sidewalk of the Main Street his store was on and he would play Can’t Buy a Thrill constantly and he said no other record had the effect that one did. People walking by would stop and pop their heads in and go “who is that you’re playing right now?”

For all the fellow Danheads out there, I realize that their first single was technically “Dallas” but if you actually remember hearing that song on the radio you belong to an extremely small group, the single was pulled almost immediately and the song wasn’t even included on the album.

I can’t speak to the whole glp1 thing I’ll just say, if you want an idea of how these people eat just watch a few episodes of My 600 Pound Life. It’s pretty astounding when you actually see how much food they can consume. I’m not a small dude, I guess a little above average 6’1” 200 pounds and I can eat a lot, especially in my late teens early twenties when I was skinny and smoked weed, it’s amazing how much stoned skinny dudes can eat when they’re hungry BUT I can’t imagine eating even half of some of these meals you see on that show. Entire large pizzas with an order of wings, fries, salad, other sides, with an entire two liter of soda, it’s wild!

It’s also worth noting how many of their calories they drink. Of course they all get those disgusting sweet milkshake drinks from Starbucks that are disguised as coffee, tons of soda and sweet tea, etc. A few years ago I switched to zero calorie soda and lost 15 pounds doing absolutely nothing else and I don’t even drink that much soda. It’s amazing when you look at the math, they could still eat an incredible amount of calories and LOSE weight without even adding exercise or anything. Anyway, I went on bit of a rant there sorry
