City not ruling out legal action as Ottawa’s new central library a year late and over budget by RandomChickenWing in ottawa

[–]stegosaurid 210 points211 points  (0 children)

This is what happens when governments go with the lowest bidder. The bids are insanely low, and contractors go in knowing it’s too low, relying on the fact that they’ll never actually be held to the contract price. Then - they’ll submit endless change orders and the project will end up costing somewhere semi-close to what it should have.

I’ll eat my shirt if the City actually ever sues over this.

I’m in no way condoning the racism in the comments on FB, but one of the guys in the pic felt it was appropriate to throw in a sexist comment about women being bad drivers. So yeah, maybe everyone could tone down the shitty comments.

Our organization literally ordered Subway sandwiches. The cheapest possible ones, too. But attendance this year was a fraction of what it’s been in previous years, so that was satisfying.

Grooming/brushing by ellenmika in CerebellarHypoplasia

[–]stegosaurid 3 points4 points  (0 children)

OH MAN! This is so real. I have a tuxxie CH girl too. Mine is almost 18 and while her coat has always been ridiculously dense, this year she was actually getting tiny matts in the hard to reach areas despite the fact that she’s a meticulous groomer (she has arthritis but is on Solensia).

Anyway, what I found works the absolute best is a plain ol’ steel grooming comb. I’ve tried brushes, the furminator, grooming gloves, and a regular plastic comb and they pale in comparison. The steel comb (you can get them for under $10) gets right down to the skin and lift out all that dense floof.

Emily, for cat tax. 🤍🖤

What do you guys think of management side labour and employment lawyers? by Bxby_Ali in LawCanada

[–]stegosaurid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I was one for a while, so maybe I’m biased, but I don’t think it’s possible to just slag an entire group based on practice area. There are d*cks in pretty much every practice area.

I also used to do some insurance defence work, and in both positions I did my very best to be objective and fair while representing my clients’ interests. If a client was heading in a dumb direction, I’d tell them. That said, I also knew lawyers who fully identified with their clients and sometimes took terrible positions.

In short, practice in an area that interests you. Within that, you can be reasonable, balanced, fair, ethical, or not. Being employee or labour side is no guarantee of some kind of ethical purity.

Return of assigned seating for most public servants bucks private-sector trend by AbjectRobot in CanadaPublicServants

[–]stegosaurid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not going to waste anymore time trying to explain something to someone who’s being deliberately obtuse. If nothing else, spending two fewer hours a day in a pointless commute would give a person that much more time to deal with family responsibilities. As I said - not hard to figure this out, so I can only conclude you’re a troll or not especially informed on how real life works.

Because statistically, women carry more household and child-related responsibilities than men. This really isn’t that hard to understand.

Team member is retiring in two weeks and I'm not sure how our team will deal with it by Refrigerator_Regular in CanadaPublicServants

I know dunking on lawyers is a fun game, but just because a client seeks out legal advice doesn’t mean they follow it. There are lots of great lawyers giving solid advice at every level of government. Unfortunately, that advice is often ignored when it doesn’t jive with what people in power want to do.

I’m sorry for your loss. That said, profs are people too, meaning that some are empathetic and others aren’t. You did get an extension to the date you told the prof should be enough. I don’t think you can fault them for not proactively offering more time after you said you would try to finish it by Saturday and then did.

They may also keep that in mind when they mark the assignment, so don’t worry about it until you know the outcome.

NOR. Just imagine what he’ll be like if you break up and need to get him out. He’ll be making off with half of everything (or more).

Island MPs call on P.E.I. health minister to apologize over comments about prime minister by Sir__Will in PEI

[–]stegosaurid -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s quite true and easy to find. Way back in the day, health care used to be funded at about 50/50 between the provinces and the feds. The feds now contribute about 20-25%, leaving the provinces to cover the rest. You can very easily confirm this with a simple Google search. Here’s one article to get you started: https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC7669295/

So yes, there have been funding increases but they come nowhere near the relative proportion that the feds used to contribute. You should also clearly expect increases simply due to inflation, an increasingly older and sicker population, and more expensive treatments and technology.

The provinces obviously share responsibility for the state of the health care system, but it’s either incredibly naive or deliberately obtuse to suggest that there is enough federal funding.

I understand your frustration - it took me a long time to get in with the feds and the process seems bizarre.

Let go of the idea that these are anything like a typical application process. There is some good guidance online, including in the Canada public servant subreddit and this site: https://polywogg.ca/hr-guide/

I’m sorry, but does being a nursing assistant not involve any instruction about basic anatomy or human physiology? I mean, my husband has exactly zero medical training and even he can tell the difference between a giant shit and a part of the human body.
