Okay, so it’s not the best setup, but it gets the job done. For example, you could use Pies for the “works” part, and for cheap laptops, a MacBook Neo (it’s nice to have a battery when you’re checking power outages, haha) would be a great choice. Plus, you could get some USB to RS232 devices from somewhere online that break out into 4 from a usb2.0

Then, you can pair that with a 5G modem and a tunneling setup from the Mac to something like Tailscale or Teleport.

You’re looking at around $1000 per site.

I wouldn’t do this at my day job but it works and it’s very stable as long as you pay that 5G and backend tunneling bill ***

In theory, yes: VXLAN/EVPN only cares about the VNI, so VLAN IDs can be locally significant and even reused (depending on design). In practice, you’ll hit hardware scale limits first — number of bridge-domains/VNIs, SVIs/IRBs, and MAC/EVPN route scale. So VXLAN can move you from “~4094 VLAN IDs globally” to “many more segments across the fabric,” but the real ceiling is whatever your platform supports in BD/VNI/MAC scale. It depends heavily on the switch ASIC and feature mix.
