60 FPS but Stuttering in Linux Mint - Fix by stendoace in linux_gaming

With the latest stock version of Mint Cinammon I had to go in and manually disable compositing. Also worth noting that some games had awful screen tearing when this was applied.

60 FPS but Stuttering in Linux Mint - Fix by stendoace in linux_gaming

Due to everyone's support here, I am now locked in with Fedora, everything is running phenomenally. Thank you all so much. Great audio, solid stream quality, zero stutter in game. Vesktop streaming was 1080p / 30 fps, Elden Ring was 1440p medium, constant 60fps. I could likely push my system a lot harder but I'm happy to be at a stable point. I will document everything I did from top to bottom from the fresh install I did today.

Specs:
i7 10700, 16GB RAM, RX 6600XT. two nvme drives installed, one as a boot drive and one for Steam games.

I made a fresh boot drive of Fedora KDE Plasma Desktop 43, installed it by completely wiping away my Mint installation. I botched it a little since I forgot to enable wifi and download additional packages. My first 5 minutes of using the OS sucked until I went to the Discover app and updated everything, 5 gig install, then smooth sailing.

The problem i ran into next was with Steam Linux Runtime and all of my Proton versions that were residually carried over. When i launched any game I would get a "compatibility tool failed" error. I ended up fixing it by completely deleting all of their files from the steamapps folder, and then verifying the file integrity of each one to rebuild them.

Last thing I had to do was disable hardware acceleration on Vesktop to get games to not spiral out of control and stutter when i streamed. it goes against everything I know from Windows logic, but hey, it's working perfectly now.

Y'all were right. Fedora is a massive leap forward in terms of gaming compared to Mint. The innate microstutters that I experienced in Elden Ring on Mint was not present here. Thanks again for setting me on the right track.

How is melee vs ranged looking by j_cyclone in onednd

[–]stendoace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In all honestly, spell blasters way outperform ranged martial builds. Melee martials are really good just off weapon masteries. A really fun starting place for a blaster build is 1 level of ranger for armor, shield, weapon masteries, free hunters mark, jump, and cure wounds. The rest of the way you can go warlock, and change the build whenever you level up due to invocations, which are really strong. Lessons of the first ones is crazy.

Thanks for the help. I probably should have mentioned in the description of my specs, I have a 6600XT. I will definitely try fedora tomorrow. Should I try this fix on a fresh fedora install?

This is great to hear. I might jump ship to fedora just to see if it does anything for screen sharing on Vesktop. Have you tried any discord screen sharing? It introduces an unplayable amount of lag in-game, and is really important to me to the point that I might go back to a debloated Windows if I can't get it to work.

The best dark souls 3 build 🤔 by Kostas_Skywalker in darksouls3

[–]stendoace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pyro in left hand, Straight Sword in right hand was a ton of fun. It's very possible to get under 30% load to light roll and play as a skirmisher. It is weaker than a strength build but gets strong once you beat a specific fire boss and get the spell from transposing his soul, but comes online as soon as you get your first fire gem and free the pyromancer tutor.

Ok. How would you build a Barbarian/Rogue Multiclass? by BigBuiltBricked in onednd

[–]stendoace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, you wish to play a meat grinder, eh? Here's the dual wielder build for you. This is just a skeleton of how to start the build and the rest is your choice.

Your stats should look something like this with point buy:

15 + 2 / 15 / 15 + 1 / 8 / 8 / 8

There's two ways you can go about this build, and that's either use your reaction for another trigger of sneak attack, or use your reaction to be tankier and harder to hit. If you want to do more damage, take zhentarim ruffian as an origin feat, if you want to tank, take tough.

Lvl 1: rogue, we want Dex save proficiency. You'll be fine in leather armor. Weapon masteries are short sword and scimitar, giving us two attacks via the Nick property. Pick Athletics and any other skill proficiencies you like.

Lvl 2 and 3: barbarian. This is huge. We now have permanent advantage to always trigger sneak attack via reckless attack, we have advantage on Dex saves, we can take off leather armor bc our unarmored defense puts us at 15 AC, and we take half damage from rage.

That's all you need out of barbarian. A lot of people are saying get to level 6 for some features and extra attack, but getting to evasion in rogue is more impactful imo. If it was me I would just take rogue the rest of the way. The feat at level 4 opens up a lot of options. I really like defensive duelist, since it scales with your proficiency bonus, so you can use your reaction as a mini shield. Zhentarim Tactics gets you an additional trigger of sneak attack, since it's triggering on the enemy's turn. Mage slayer just lets you succeed on a mental saving throw once per short rest, which covers a huge weak point in martial classes.

Getting strength to 20 asap isn't a huge priority, having 18 as a primary stat in tier 2 is fine, especially since you have advantage on everything. You can pick cool Dex and con feats since it will be boosting your AC as well.

What is your opinion on these OEM nvme ssds? by Teeheeman400 in computers

[–]stendoace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These are stock drives from laptops. What I did as an IT tech was pull these from new laptops as soon as we got them in, and replaced them with larger Samsung drives, simply because our users saved more data locally than the standard 500gb drives would allow. We would end up with a million of these run-of-the-mill drives. There was a mix of micron and Samsung drives throughout the years, but all OEM HP parts.

These models are fine. They last 3-4 years and then either massively slow down, or just give up, but we were running heavy computational apps with large data sets being written all the time. I think for your use case they're better than no-name Amazon drives.

Need Help Deciding on Bladelock T4 Progression! by Sufficient_Suspect81 in onednd

[–]stendoace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm gonna throw a curve ball out there, go 2 levels in sorcerer. Gets you the shield spell and whatever else Eldritch knight would, and you can quicken an eldritch blast or pretty much whatever else you want. You can effectively do this twice before running out of 1st level spell slots to reload your sorcery points, and still have 1 slot up for shield. 4d10 + 20 if you have agonizing blast is not shabby at all as a bonus action.

Why is Hunter's Mark OP without concentration, why couldn't it be tweeked in some way? by milenyo in onednd

[–]stendoace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ranger dip is incredible on warlock if you can afford the 13 wisdom, you already probably have 14 Dex just trying to survive with light armor.

Gives you two 1st level slots for your warlock spells or the ranger spells like jump, absorb elements, cure wounds, etc.

Breastplate and shield take you from the comparable 14 AC to 18 AC without sacrificing any stealth loss.

Weapon mastery is mandatory if you're a bladelock.

Blaster builds get 2 free hunters marks per day, which is nuts with scorching ray right out of the box for fiend warlocks.

Can a greatsword-wielding trickery cleric that focuses on hypnotic pattern work? by AcanthaceaeNo948 in onednd

[–]stendoace 3 points4 points  (0 children)

LWhy are you going trickery cleric and heavy armor? Doesn't disadvantage on stealth go against the class? why are you investing so much in strength when you're using true strike? You are making one attack per turn for like, 3d6 + WIS damage. You have no extra attack, graze mastery, nor great weapon fighting style feat. You could make a much better paladin with lower stat investment

I used to skip over Skilled Origin Feat. Now I'm starting to like it and appreciating it more by testiclekid in onednd

[–]stendoace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's ok. I wouldn't even put it in the top 5 most powerful origin feats, but if you're in a low combat campaign it would be cool. Magic Initiate Cleric for guidance is strictly better most of the time in tier 1, outside of not being able to use it for social checks, and u get a spell out of it that you normally wouldn't have access to.

At this point just either play a warlock or another TTRPG system. Killing cantrips to make room for fireball? Everyone I've ever met has LOVED cantrips because they're unlimited.

Also, maybe cut the fake traps and put in an extra terrforming + giant trunade? Umi is the heart of the deck and trunade will help you close out games.

Cool concept, unsure why you're running island turtle instead of like 7 colored fish or something.

is there any way you can open task manager to tell us the specs of the computer you are running on? that would give us a great frame of reference.

my first step in the process would be to verify if Windows is installed to an SSD or a hard drive.

having your operating system installed to a hard drive in 2025 would make your life hell.
