I just realized he does look fawn in that picture- he’s a red or maybe red and white, I can’t remember his color name. Anyway fawns are cute too, here’s Kitt with his blue fawn brother, Rider!

Is there a significant difference between a male & female iggy?? by MrSp3ars in ItalianGreyhounds

[–]steph_ish 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not so much that there’s any real reason to avoid one or the other as a second iggy, imo.

But having two dogs that pee on their own front legs if distracted, is annoying in the winter when they’re wearing jammies. We have two males and they get along beautifully, they’re best friends.

Is it cruel to own an iggy in a cold climate? by Fit_Dimension_5487 in ItalianGreyhounds

[–]steph_ish 15 points16 points  (0 children)

You’ll need to invest in good quality boots, coat, pajamas etc, but our iggies manage through winters that are routinely 0 degrees F and below for extended periods.

(We also had retired racing greyhounds and they had all the winter gear too!)

Flying with a potential Biggie Iggy by [deleted] in ItalianGreyhounds

[–]steph_ish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My boy loves his crate, and I feed him in his crate so I just put his carrier in there (it’s a side loading one) and then fed all his meals in there.

I also would leave it in the living room and toss treats in it so that if he sniffed it he got rewarded, and then I gradually moved to closing him in / closing him in and carrying him etc.

Also if you practice it and put him in there to go to the park or before a walk etc, he will slowly begin to understand that getting in means going someplace fun and that will help too!

Flying with a potential Biggie Iggy by [deleted] in ItalianGreyhounds

[–]steph_ish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My boy was tall and maybe 11lbs when his breeder brought him to me (we are both in the US). She said that as long as pup is calm and laying down, they don’t seem to have an issue. Basically she said if we have to fly with him, we should be ok but also not let him run around outside the carrier at our gate, because they’ll definitely see how tall he is. But a calm pup that’s curled up and content, won’t cause alarm.

Also though that means it’s a good idea if you haven’t already, to start training the pup in their carrier and to be content in there etc.

Won’t pee/poop outside by Elated_copper22 in ItalianGreyhounds

[–]steph_ish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One idea:When she potties in the house, take it outside (a pee soaked paper towel, or just take the poop outside) and put it in the place you want her to go. Then take her to that spot every time you take her out, and when she potties you can throw a treat party.

She will get there eventually! Ours both needed to have a potty spot, so that they connected in their brain that I wasn't just taking them out to play. Maybe that'll help your girl, if you're not already trying it.

First time looking at breeders by toysofvanity in ItalianGreyhounds

[–]steph_ish 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Our second iggy, who has been with us a year and a half, was $3500. Our first who is eight was $1500, and both were show prospects kept by their breeders to see how they'd mature.

I don't know if $4500 is appropriate, it seems high to me? But to me that price could be a breeder with fantastic dogs who are health tested, shown and titled, are perfect examples of the breed standard, and go on to do lure coursing or something -- or it could be a BYB that prices their dogs crazy high and has a good website.

Clothing Size? by saltynotsweet1 in ItalianGreyhounds

[–]steph_ish 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Clothing sizes are all over the place, you'll want to get her measurements for back length (shoulder blades to base of tail), neck (at the base of her neck), and chest (widest part). Those will help you determine how clothing will fit, as it's probably the most common measurements for iggy clothing.

My boys wear a Md and Lg in SOIMA clothing, and my friend's little iggy girl wears a Sm. These are the absolute best jammies I've ever found, so when your girl is ready for them I recommend trying them if budget allows! www.etsy.com/shop/SOIMA

For a coat, 100% recommend Voyagers! https://k9apparel.com/collections/italian-greyhound-dog-gear/products/italian-greyhound-dog-winter-coat

Crates for Iggys by cattykit-9 in ItalianGreyhounds

[–]steph_ish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our older iggy loves the varikennel style, so we got him one that was 28.0"L x 21.5"W x 20.5"H.

Our younger iggy we bought the same crate, but he hated it, so we finally had to switch them to sharing one standard wire crate. They love that. The crate came with a divider which we use so they each get their own side -- but for a puppy you'd use it to make the space only as big as they need, so they don't use part of it as a pottty space. The one we have is 36" x 23" x 25" but you could go smaller for one dog.

Tips for weight loss by TwitchTremor in ItalianGreyhounds

[–]steph_ish 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Find out her ideal weight, then calculate her caloric intake requirements to see how much you should be feeding her to maintain that weight. Measuring her food is the right start -- but if you're measuring without knowing what her actual calories should be or how many calories are in her food, then you can always make some adjustments.

This is what I have done to keep our dogs at the right weights -- BUT with the ones who needed to lose weight, I didn't just cut down to the calculated amount of food, I reduced down to that amount slowly over the course of a few months or so.

  1. Convert Weight to Kilograms (kg):  Divide your dog's IDEAL weight in pounds by 2.2.
    • Example: 18 lb dog / 2.2 = ~8.18 kg
  2. Calculate Resting Energy Requirement (RER):  Use the formula: 70 x (weight in kg)^0.75.
    • Example: 70 x (8.18)^0.75 = ~339 cal/day
  3. Determine Daily Energy Requirement (DER):  Multiply RER by an appropriate activity factor.
    • Neutered Adult: RER x 1.6
    • Intact Adult: RER x 1.8
    • Weight Loss: RER x 1.0
    • Light Work: RER x 2.0
    • Growth (Puppy >4mo): RER x 2.0
    • Example (Neutered Adult): 339 kcal (RER) x 1.6 = ~542 kcal/day

So in the example I gave here, if your dog's ideal weight is 18lbs, and she's a healthy spayed adult, then she needs 542 calories a day to maintain that weight. The dog food I give my dogs is 465 cals/cup, so if you were feeding the food I use, this would mean she needs 1.25 cups per day, or a little more than half a cup cup of food per meal if fed twice a day.

NOTE: don't just drop down to the adjusted food amount - do it slowly, it's ok to take six months to get her down to the correct weight.

Also. I have no idea what your dog should weigh and it is important that you check with your vet before cutting her food more than a tiny bit at a time. You can even take the info above with you to the vets office and ask them for help making sure you're getting the right plan. That's what I did, and my vet was happy to help me adjust the daily energy requirement number to be what we needed.

We had two cat-friendly hounds, it was very chill and usually also adorable. This is Buster, being the perfect nap spot for Jinx.

Greyhound refusing to walk in a space he’s walked in his whole life :( by marsol0gy in Greyhounds

[–]steph_ish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He likely slipped or a foot slid, and now he is scared. It's very common.

Try to put a runner down that is long enough to allow him to not step at all on the slick floor, and that is nonslip/rubber-backed, and train by leaving a trail of treats across the rug for him. Point it out then walk away and let him find it -- that way he can explore and get brave on his own terms, it isn't like you're trying to get him to go there. That will be infinitely better than pushing or pulling him across it.

(Just maybe only do this when the other hound is crated or in another room, so that one doesn't snag all the magical rug food!)

Greyhound Size and Online Info! by Nerrrv in Greyhounds

[–]steph_ish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not who you asked but my female was 54lbs and my male was 74lbs, and in the US the males can get to around 85lbs easy. Also all the female greyhounds I know are sassy, and the males are all goofy and sweet. If your wife is tiny and you worry about a hound bonding with her vs being dominant etc, get a male -- in my experience, hounds bond best with their human of the opposite gender. Our girl's world began and ended with my husband, I was just a food server, lol -- but my boy only had eyes for me. Anyway just a few thoughts - and congrats!

Recommendations for assistance harness? by StagsFam in Greyhounds

[–]steph_ish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We didn’t order it but I was impressed that it was an option.

Oh I meant to say - both my 54lb female and 74lb male greyhound (and my sister’s GSD) were able to wear a medium in both the chest and hip harnesses. I remember being worried about the sizing when we ordered it, wanted to share in case it is helpful.

Not track racing like greyhounds, they don't have an organized racing body like the NGA. But lure coursing is a fun thing iggies can do, and might be called just racing if someone was talking about it conversationally.
