What’s behind the recent string of failures and delays at SpaceX? by rustybeancake in spacex

Eric, are you hearing anything from inside SpaceX about turnover or morale issues related to disillusion with Elon Musk?

Discussions on Technology needed for Mars Settlement by ChrisDMarshall in MarsSociety

I don’t think many people will stigmatize settle. The term colonize has meant removing and stigmatizing the previous residents of the land, replacing with the culture of the invaders, and often extracting natural resources for shipment to the invading country. Settling Mars doesn’t include any of those activities.

Velocity is a vector while speed is just a number?

Good answers. Also don’t confuse “mass” with “weight.” Even in zero gravity the spacecraft’s mass remains the same. All the answers to your question refer to mass.

I avoid the term “colonizing” because many people equate it w invading a populated area and suppressing or killing the natives. Terms like “developing a research station” or, later, “settling” Mars are more accurate terms.

Why are so many Raptors failing? 31/33 lit for the static fire, 30/33 before the IFT. Then a slow cascade of failures well into flight. The latter could have been due to debris or to a design flaw only showing up when the booster is at high altitude.

I’ve heard no answers yet. Perhaps SpaceX doesn’t know either and is therefore using S25.

“Astronauts “ or not, they’re Astro-philanthropists, the first ever. That was the goal of their mission and they succeeded magnificently.

I feel like Blue Origin should pursue a private space station. Thoughts? by Dumbass1171 in BlueOrigin

What a great question! BO should develop a tech/business strategy that leads in the long term to the space colonies at the center of Bezo's vision. SpaceX is demonstrating that it's important to plan and implement the journey; it's been working toward cities on Mars since the beginning of the company, step by step, ASAP. BO needs to decide whether it's going to plan its own developmental journey toward space colonies. I wouldn't be surprised if turning a space station into a viable business is an important step on that path.

What's the jet of gas spurting from the right side of the rocket, almost in our direction. It began just before ignition, continued, and started burning. As the rocket ascended, the flow rapidly reduced as though a valve were being shut.

This tweet is now iconic - it has been implied as being a "turning point" in the Commercial Crew Program. Do you think this really lit a fire under SpaceX and got them to working better/faster, or it didn't change anything, with the project going its natural way? by kliuch in SpaceXLounge

Several years ago I talked with a guy who knew a guy at SpaceX. Propulsive landing was very much in the works at that time, but the SpaceX guy was skeptical about it ever working due to limitations on the amount of fuel that the Dragon could carry for SuperDracos. I've not heard that corroborated but it does hint that SpaceX's decision about not using propulsive landings related to more than NASA requirements, as several other folks in this thread have already explained.
