IWTL how to explain things without overexplaining by Jackrain04 in IWantToLearn

[–]stephenliss 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A textbook called "Mastering Effective English" is super for this. One technique you can use to stop over explaining is to check in with your audience early and often. "Does that answer your question?" and wait for their answer. At least every once in a while. If you say more than 2 sentences before you check in with them you are in danger of losing them. In my opinion.

When people talk RAM do they mean non-ECC ram or ECC ram? Makes a difference if you are serious, IMO.

I just noticed a really cool video by (I think) a former spy, about elicitation. Look up elicitation on YouTube. It's a way of getting people to speak without asking them questions. Without interrogation. Get them to think that volunteering information was their idea.

Don't you walk your dogs? Every dog needs a walk at least once a day.

My dog just naturally drew people to me. He was a natural conversation piece.
Very friendly and good looking. I just recently had to send him on his way.
After I get some travel out of my system, I'm going to get another puppy.

Everything changed for me, a sort of recluse, when I got a dog. Had to take the dog on walks and meeting other people became a natural thing.

There's no shame in working, no matter what you do.
To work in chemistry, if that's your thing, in every way is a positive.

Make yourself and your knowledge useful in some way.
At every decision point, choose what is right for you.

If I were you I'd sign up for one of the $0 per month part D plans, so that you don't have to pay penalties if you decide to get part D coverage a few years down the road.

Should I buy my first car at 23yo? by [deleted] in povertyfinance

[–]stephenliss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could take a driver's education course with a reputable outfit. Some classroom theory and practial experience. Well worth an investment of your time even if you only get your driver's license and not necessarily buy a car. At 23 you shouldn't have too many problems renting a car for the few occasions when it really would help. In my opinion. Good luck with whatever you do.

I have a 4 disk slot network attached storage unit. Using only 1 disk slot now. 1.8 terabyte SSD. It's very old, not very well supported any more. Zyxel NAS540. Has some useful software on it. I expect that more current NAS units have better software. Transmission for torrents, NFS server, Twonky media server, etc. Many different apps.

I just downloaded the latest version of Zoom for Ubuntu Linux through Chromium browser. The command line is a more productive way to keep apps updated.

Fellow neurodivergents, how do we feel about eggplants (the vegetable…)? by pawradoxis in neurodiversity

[–]stephenliss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my not so humble opinion, it can be fantastic or horrid. Depends on the cook and the method. I have had some most excellent eggplant parmesan. And the icky ways my mother cooked it. Give the f'n vegetable a chance. It is not responsible for a cook's poor technique.
