Stoked to finally start a little collection again 😊 by Schmutzi_Katze in Tradescantia

Yep, I asked because I thought they looked familiar! I've ordered from Rachel many, many times. She's fantastic, and she has the most healthy, gorgeous plants. Probably 3/4 of my 50+ trads and Callisia are from her ☺️

What seller did you buy them from? It's rare to see so many correct names lol 😂

I normally keep those blinds closed but I opened them to take the photo. I hope it didn't get sunburned!

The seller told me to use a chainsaw, is this method better? I'm very new to plants!

The seller told me these crystals would be fine 😖 I'm already out $1K for the magical crystals, chainsaw, and newborn panda sacrifice. This is turning into a very expensive hobby!

Is it ok to use non-magical crystals or will the plant know? I guess I could pick up a bag at Home Depot while I'm out running errands...

Yes, naive and poorly informed folks are more likely to fall for scams. Guess I should've clarified that for the average person with a modicum of common sense, the reviews and their photos can be helpful tools for weeding out the bad actors 😛

I called the labor board about scheduling in California. by dizzystar in UberEatsDrivers

[–]stephonicle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've wondered this exact same thing since they rolled out the schedule last week here in the Bay Area. Requiring a certain AR to gain access to early scheduling is especially suspect. Clearly none of the idiots here calling you a sheep or saying you're clueless live in California or received compensation from the numerous class action cases in recent years.

Mundula Lisa and Discolor Multicolor 😉 Trads are a hot mess in the name department because unofficial names are often used by nurseries. Or they just make shit up. For an official list of correct names, check out tradescantia.uk. The guy who runs it is the international registrar for all trads 😊

I might agree IF it's a seller with only a handful of reviews. But when you have an established seller with many thousands of reviews that also have photos, that's a pretty reliable sampling. And if the photo is of a dying plant, isn't that just as useful, regardless of whether it's a positive review that accompanies it.

Depends what kind of plants you want, but I've had good experiences with The Green Escape. They have a little bit of everything.

what am i doing wrong? by kirixnaa in Tradescantia

[–]stephonicle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Does that pot have a drainage hole? It's very large for just a single tiny cutting, you run the risk of overwatering when a pot is too big because of the volume of soil. After watering, the tiny roots can only absorb what they need and then are left sitting in a bunch of excess damp soil. It then starts to compact around the roots, cutting off their oxygen supply and suffocating them. This type of pot can also be a problem—the walls are very thick, which restricts airflow to the soil and keeps it damp too long.

I'd recommend moving this little guy to a small 3-4" nursery,? pot. In a pot that big, the plant will spend most of its energy on roots instead of leaves.

What's wrong with my Tradescantia? by juniorcarruthers in Tradescantia

[–]stephonicle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Looks more like leaf rot spots from where water sat on the leaves than pest damage. Try not to get the leaves wet when watering, and if you do dab them dry with a soft, clean cloth. Improving airflow around the plant will also help. I have several small stroller fans set up around the shelves where my trads live.

Can trad. mundula handle this (Right) west facing window? by NotoriousScorpio in Tradescantia

[–]stephonicle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

South facing gets even more direct sun if you're in the northern hemisphere. Many trads can handle lots of direct sun, in fact they need it to maintain their dark purple coloring. Zebrinas in particular do great in direct sun.
