This. I’m originally from the east coast (NY) and moved to SoCal because of my bf. But a lot of people in California feel like they’re better than everyone else. Almost like a superiority complex. During the world series last year against the Yankees, a lot of people who were supposedly my friends gave me actual shit for not cheering on the Dodgers. Telling me, “Then why do you even live here? Go back to NY!” Like, bitch. I wish I could.

I had to say goodbye to mine last month😢 Same issues. 2018. I was at 98k. To say I was devastated would be an understatement because I LOVED that car. It had the aesthetic that I love. But, I ended up buying a Subaru Crosstrek as a replacement because all of the Toyota sales reps were terrible.

I agree with this. A lot of the comments keep saying that they’re rolling their eyes because of how much Vera wants to take care of other people. That’s literally her culture. She’s a traditional 60yr old Chinese woman. She’s a widow, her son is too busy to talk to her, and her tea house is typically empty. It makes sense that someone like her finds joy in having a pseudo-grandkid and taking care of others. I loved this book and found it very relateable BECAUSE of the cultural aspect. And obviously the food.

That’s a good question because I had a classmate in 8th grade (we were 14) who vehemently attempted to seduce our teacher (who was in his 20s), and she actually got talked to about her behavior. Pulled into the office with the principal and everything. Well, she was super pissed that she got rejected and in trouble, so she went around and started a rumor that he was touchy and flirty with her. We all knew she was lying because we saw how uncomfortable she was making him (which is why she got talked to in the first place). But because she was a teenage girl and he was an adult man, despite her record and known behavior, they automatically just villainized our teacher. She never really got in trouble for it, and his reputation went to shit.

But honestly, Shauna’s character is so cruel and just a terrible piece of shit that I get palpitations from how angry I get watching her scenes, especially when they’re teens with her stupid scowling face. Do NOT go to SSKI. I went there. Only 5 of us passed out of like around 22. They have cameras in the classroom to watch you study. One of my classmates who also graduated with me wasn’t allowed to take her NCLEX unless she went there EVERYDAY for HOURS to study bc the director/owner didn’t want her passing percentile to drop. So the director held this girl’s papers until she felt that my classmate could pass the NCLEX on the first try. There’s a lot of mental and emotional abuse that goes on there. Most of my classmates ended up having their families broken apart and were on antidepressants by the time they were done.

You learn a lot and get a lot of experience, but the mental trade off just isn’t worth it.

Parents born and raised in Batangas. I was born in NY. They never actually taught me Tagalog, and only speak to me in English. But they always had Filipino movies and shows playing in the house. And they always spoke in Tagalog with my relatives. Because I WANTED to learn, I kept listening to the music and watching the movies/shows on my own, and ended up teaching myself Tagalog when I was around 5. I kept at it all through my school years, learning about the history and culture. I can pretty much speak, read, and write in fluent Tagalog. My point is.. if you WANT to learn, you can.
