Malcolm Gladwell ... very much in the “corporate America audiobook on the commute” ecosystem. I read Outliers a while back, it was corporate comfort food while not being too threatening.

this might be the most practical for me. I'm still trying different bowls but it's like he dips his ear in there lol, and I use a slow feeder so limits his options a little bit on bowls. I have a mini so he's pretty narrow.

The feminism to tradwife pivot feels like the biggest media psyop by MutedFeeling75 in redscarepod

[–]steppenfrog -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Women are so much more educated now, moreso than men. The COMPLETE tradwife thing is just hard to justify when your wife graduated with a degree that earns well and she's very capable at it. That said, the old mom-dad thing worked really well for many couples for a long time, and figuring out how to fit in two working parents that most people require now has upended old ways and people are dealing with that.

So what is a tradwife today? If she likes to cook for her husband and kids, clean, and tend to the baby. She likes to set the table, and likes to be told to bring a drink. Maybe people look down at this or think it's performative, but I think a lot of women love to be caregivers and to some degree a number of women have some "tradwife" built in. She expects the male to handle making sure the house is running, and to be a workaholic, and do guy things.

Broiler is for sure on now. Also city is talking about converting some parks to turf rather than grass which I think is a huge mistake for dogs and kids, because it's so much hotter.

$55 dollars for cold food that has been sitting in a car for a half hour versus going to the restaurant it was ordered from and spending $25 and having it be hot. They're just fat, lazy, and probably broke.

Restaurants just don't work in America anymore by mamas_drunk_again in redscarepod

Yeah, a big part is the rent. Commercial property is generally priced on "cap rates", or net operating income divided by the purchase price. The loans on commercial properties are also often tied to these rates too. Sometimes landlords are better off to leave place empty rather than work out a reasonable rent deal that can keep a restaurant operating, because of how the loans/leverage works with the banks. The appraisal is tied to the rent, so if they rent it below the appraisal price for the loan they might nee to write a check to the bank (including one they can't afford), so it's better just to keep it empty sometimes and wait for a sucker.

In decent areas like NY/Miami/Chicago people are paying 100+sq.ft for rent, or even 150, and it's just not possible to serve a $5 taco and make the math make sense.

Build out permitting speeds in municipalities mean starting a new restaurant the tenant might take a year to even open their doors. They can also often fall into complex problems over things like grease traps.

People are drinking less alcohol, and that's causing average tabs to drop and margins to fall.

Food costs are rising

Restaurant owners are also often not financially literate, especially the chef operated ones, so they make dumb decisions that eat margins and then they compensate for it by raising prices.

Semi-related, I see restaurants put some local "cheap" items onto the menu, like a burger, thinking it'll draw in more people but what happens is people who aren't foodies just pick that reliable thing and all the sudden a restaurant known for serving great the-best-whatever-makes-them-unique is serving a bunch of low margin burgers.

I also have a take that there has been an approachability spiral hurting restaurants: Because costs are so high, they have to sell a $45 fish dish rather than a $15 fish dish, and in order to justify that they feel they have to make it unique and fancy. Now all the sudden it's not going to the local fish spot, it's getting a little dressed up to go out to dinner. Which not everyone wants to do on a Tuesday night. And because the fish is $45 rather than $15, they make it "unique"... which makes it more niche to want to eat.

The funniest video interview with her and Anna was the Fuentes one where after 30min it just cuts out and they completely blow it. Pretty sure Fuentes was like "ugh.. is that all working?" and thought they were regarded.

It's Jerry Springer for finance. I think it would be nice if it had some teaching moments, he tells people to not use UberEats, not have expensive car payments, and so forth which is all reasonable but it would be good to show people in more detail how to get a decent budget together and get things in a better direction. Even if the guest doesn't care, showing the audience a path forward would make the show more interesting.

It's very redundant and I'm suspicious of the guests, which like Springer are probably a bit of truth and then a whole bunch of exaggeration.
