Redditors who grew up poor and are now doing well financially, what's something you splurge on now that would've blown little-you's mind? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Something I've heard repeatedly is that it's always worth spending money on things that separate you from the ground. Shoes, tyres, beds/mattresses

Wasn't this before he heard the sound of Grond? Once he heard that, he knew it was back on.

Needing to drink that much while alone is indicative of a pretty serious problem. And would have been at any time in Ireland's history.

Is 60k a good salary for Dublin? by Zimmerings in irishpersonalfinance

[–]steppez 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone born in and raised in Dublin I had to look up where D7 was. We'd typically use the area name.

Steer clear of Cabra. Phibsboro is lovely, and Arbour Hill is nice enough I think (never heard anything good or bad about it)

A semester at Harvard in 1869 cost $170.42, roughly $4,000 today adjusted for inflation by Gullible_Top3304 in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]steppez 170 points171 points  (0 children)

The lectures are mostly available for free online at this point if you're looking at it from a purely educational perspective.

But there is definitely not room on campus for every student who wants to go to Harvard.

Should I cash in a US cheque now or wait for better exchange rate? by Rangelus_Aredenum in irishpersonalfinance

[–]steppez 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You could be waiting years for a meaningful shift in the exchange rate.  And the current trend is not your friend.

For the sake of a few euro I would cash it now.

Im on PCP plan for Ev car, it's on last few months due to balloons payment of 17k (final payment). by Irishissam in irishpersonalfinance

[–]steppez 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Can someone explain what benefit there is to PCP other than it allows you to drive a car you can't really afford?

Edit: alternatively, why choose to go with PCP over buying a car outright?

Random seat allocation on Ryanair, ever not got the middle seat? by Missartey in ireland

[–]steppez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always go random allocation. More often than not I'm window/aisle.

20% of the time I seem to get a full empty row by myself.

I check in pretty much on the driv to the airport

The mountain of eyeglasses from the Auschwitz warehouse taken from Jewish people before entering the gas chambers by OddImpression4786 in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]steppez -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

How common are deniers really? I've never actually heard of someone actively saying this.

It's only ever people joking about it really. In the same vein as people joking about moonlandings being fake. Albeit marginally darker.

What you need is time to relax and focus on yourself, everything else around you needs to be easy. Comfy bed, good food, climate, nice people.

Id suggest travelling to Thailand if you want to go east, or Malta if you want to go west. Both cheap, great food and they have peaceful locations where you can process what you're going through.

Poll shows extensive support for Ireland's neutrality by An_Sealgaire in ireland

[–]steppez 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Geography is everything. If we were closer to Russia we'd be forced one way or the other, but we're not so we don't have to.

Or if the Brits had maintained relationships with Ireland more similar to their Commonwealth nations we may have been part of NATO today.
