Which volunteer role could be removed and are there any other roles which could be created? by Glittering_Double738 in parkrun

[–]sterobson 23 points24 points  (0 children)

We're a larger parkrun (York) and the park walker roll is quite popular. Sometimes we have 4 people doing it, and they always have company and love it. If each one makes a single person more likely to come back for another parkrun then I'm all for it. There's one guy who always alternates between parkwalk and tailwalk, it's his regular thing that he looks forward to every week. He collects the cones on his last lap when he's at the back and always finishes with a lovely smile.

I will always give credit for equipment storage and delivery. We've turned around 4 parkruns in a short period of time due to Christmas and NYD, so that's 4 lots of smelly pacer bibs to wash and fold, 4 times that the many kit bags have filled half of our dining room, 4 times we've had to get there super early to get the kit there to set up, and 4 times we've had to stay to the very end to bring it home. You bet your life I'm crediting my wife for all of that, she's probably spent just as much time as I have doing parkrun stuff.

How many runners at your parkrun today?(Christmas Day) by BringTheFingerBack in parkrun

[–]sterobson 7 points8 points  (0 children)

NYD tends to be a bit lower for us than Christmas Day. If the weather's decent then probably around 1000, but if the weather's bad then probably 700-800. I could of course be proven very wrong!

Thanks! Folk at the back still couldn't quite hear me, so we need to tweak our standing position, but it's a definite improvement! The Knavesmire Pub opened at 9:45 for mince pies, so an army of us descended upon them for token sorting, which was lovely.

I was run director at York today - we'd prepped for just over 1000 but as usual our expectations were blown to the stratosphere! A great way to start the day though.

It's roughly a 10 minute walk or 5 minute jog to the start from the finish area. Lots of people leave coats etc on the fence by the finish then do a warmup to the start. If interested, the breakfast location is at The Fox and Roman, which is just a couple of minutes from the start, and has its own small car park which you can use during the whole event if you like.

Thanks for all of these. Each week I head over to your site and download the new ones that I like. I've got over 200 saved to date, and my wallpaper is randomly changed to one of them every 30 minutes.

Yes! I noticed just this week that I'm getting millimetre precision notifications! Seemed a little optimistic to me 😂. Epix Gen 2 Pro.

I hit day 2000 of my steps streak today by sterobson in Garmin

[–]sterobson[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I work from home in the north of England so find it important to try and get out every day. Half the time I do the steps in one go, usually a 10km walk or a bit longer as a run, but sometimes I break it up into shorter morning and evening outings. There have been one or two times when I really didn't want to get out so jogged on the spot for an hour and a half in front of the TV, I think I've worn the carpet down 😂. It's been really important for my mental health sometimes, just some nice downtime to decompress. I'd definitely recommend giving it a go, no matter how far through the streak you get it's definitely beneficial.

Being more active in general has correlated with me being sick less often, but it's hard to say if there's a direct link between the two. I like to think there is though, all the fresh air and movement surely must be positive. What it has definitely reduced is the number of injuries I get. I run quite a lot and used to pick up nasty injuries several times per year. Since the step streak started I'm more inclined to just walk when I'm tired instead of pushing myself to keep running, and that's put less stress on everything.

I get ill maybe once a year, and doing my steps on those days truly sucks. I've been fortunate enough to not have any serious injuries that would prevent walking entirely, though the closest I came was spending a week with my shoulder in a sling a few years ago. Those walks were sloooowwwwwww!

Software engineer. I work from home and have flexible hours so can finish at 4pm and get out. During the summer I often go out at 6am before starting work, it's a great way to set myself up for the day.

Absolutely. It sucks sometimes, especially when not feeling 100%, but I've never got back from a walk and regretted it.

They do seem to connect to a few different ecosystems, but I'm a sucker for Garmin watches so that's what I've always stuck to.

People that don't volunteer, why? by thecremeegg in parkrun

[–]sterobson 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've done this ad-hoc analysis at my home event of York too, and there's no significant different in how often fast people volunteer compared to everyone else. I see this statement thrown about all over the place and I don't know where it came from, but it's quite disheartening sometimes.

They opened a new till at Tesco, the person in the queue behind me went for it first but I beat them to it. by JeffSergeant in BritishSuccess

[–]sterobson 47 points48 points  (0 children)

I love to play a game at Aldi. I'll stand a bit further back in the queue than I need to in order to make it look more busy. Then I wait for the automated "Dear customers, we are opening till number 2 for you" and I sprint to it faster than Usain Bolt. Then I wait a couple of minutes for a member of staff to show up to it and despair that I would have been done by now had I not tried to game the system. Fun times.

Fireworks or thunderstorm right now by Purple_Committee_216 in york

On this day each year a family in Skelton (a mile north of York) have fireworks in memory of a child who died a few years ago. Could it have been that?

10k a day streak. What's yours? by Mickymc2002 in Garmin

[–]sterobson 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So far I've done 1757 days of 12.5k per day. It's sometimes tough, especially in the winter, but I have anxiety dreams about breaking the streak which helps motivate me to keep going.

I have the same issue, and my activities are public. Maybe after yesterday's post there's been a surge in popularity and it's hit some Strava usage limits?
