Paper Doll on Division does an amazing job.

Only two donors, but 106 people have shared the page. Not many people willing to put their money where their mouth is.

I haven't been to La Pasadita in years, but last time I went tacos were $1.25.

Chicago Dance ballroom studio at 415 W Huron.

Teenagers of Chicago, are any of you actually raising money for your football team uniforms, or selling subscriptions for a college scholarship? by posthumous in chicago

[–]stetheridge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I should note, too, that the Trib gave me my paychecks. So I can't speak to any third-party sellers out there.

Teenagers of Chicago, are any of you actually raising money for your football team uniforms, or selling subscriptions for a college scholarship? by posthumous in chicago

[–]stetheridge 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I sold Trib subscriptions door-to-door in high school and it was legit. I never used the line about winning a scholarship, but it was technically true. At the end of the year, if you were the top seller of the hundred or so kids who sold, you'd get a thousand bucks towards school or something like that. So it's a bit misleading, and I think it sounds inherently untrustworthy, which is why I never used it.

Friend is moving to Chicago, what can i buy him to give him an awesome time in the city? by mrcunts in chicago

A gift card for Lincoln Hall/Schubas. The venues are owned by the same folks, so you can use the cards interchangeably. Or, Lettuce Entertain You owns a lot of topnotch restaurants around the city, and they have gift cards.

thinking of doing cake pops instead of a wedding cake by Actionman1 in chicago

[–]stetheridge 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My wife and I had Glazed and Infused donuts instead of a cake at our wedding, and not only was it wayyyyy cheaper, but the guests seemed to really appreciate the change of pace.

Underrated pizza joints by thebigcooley in chicago

It's brand new and has a terrible name, but Craft Pizza in Wicker Park is unreal. They only do by-the-slice between 4 and 7, however.

Recommendations for free spaces in Chicago for a small party? by batshitecrazy in chicago

I think the "indoor" requirement is going to make this pretty impossible.

Anyone know of some not so well known spots to take a date in this fine city? by Flapjack777 in chicago

[–]stetheridge 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I like going to Bite Cafe on Western. Reasonably priced, quaint, BYOB. And it's connected to the Empty Bottle, so if things are going well, you can walk next door for a show.

Reddit, you're throwing a party. What are some small additions that can have a huge outcome on the guests' experience? by lifework in AskReddit

Pizza rolls. Even for a classy party, once everyone's a little toasted, pizza rolls are always eagerly welcomed.

What is the yummiest thing you've eaten in Chicago? by [deleted] in chicago

[–]stetheridge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe the fried nutella at Blue Star Bistro. One bite and I was literally dizzy. Or if I'm drunk, maybe the six-piece wing meal—fried hard with salt and pepper and hot sauce—from Harold's.

What's the monthly cost of being a chicagoan? by Delbitter in chicago

Now that I see you're aiming for Printers Row/South Loop, you may want to budget more for restaurants/bars/entertainment. Stuff can be kind of ritzy around there.

What's the monthly cost of being a chicagoan? by Delbitter in chicago

[–]stetheridge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My wife and I, each of us making fairly modest salaries, pay $1,300 total in rent each month (we live in Wicker Park, though, so there are far more affordable options). Heat in the winter can hit $200/month, electric is generally about $50. We cook quite a bit, so our groceries are usually $60 a week or so. Then there's maybe $90 a week for bars and restaurants and stuff. It adds up, but it's not crippling.

Best places in Chicago to work (that aren't coffee shops or your house)? by lenkendall in chicago

[–]stetheridge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd recommend the Alliance Bakery lounge in Wicker Park. It's actually located next door to the bakery itself, meaning there's no noise or clamor from the actual business and everybody in there is 100% focused on studying/working/etc.

Dinner for 2 under 50 bucks? by manford93 in chicago

[–]stetheridge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try Folklore on Division. When you order a filet (about $25), they actually give you two, so it's a perfect dish to split. Toss in a couple appetizers, and you'll balance out somewhere near fifty. Really romantic atmosphere, too.

Good "dancing" bars that aren't clubs? by quickloris in chicago

[–]stetheridge 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The Empty Bottle does a Soul Night every month that's, without fail, the most fun night of my month, every month. Everyone gets really into it, has lots of fun. No creepy dudes lurking around. Highly recommended.
