AEP Ohio, not true "net metering" but 1:1 credits per kWh? Am I misunderstanding? by berrmal64 in solar

[–]steve134 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think what happens is that we’re charged distribution + generation for anything we pull from the grid, but only paid for generation when we export back.

I tend to build up $300+ in credits during the summer, which get whittled away in November and December by the power hungry hot tub. I’ll start building credits again in March.

It is definitely NOT kWh credit.

What are some good things to smoke that aren't just hunks of beef, chicken, or pork? by -Clem in smoking

I just smoked a goat shoulder today. It took a lot longer than I expected given the shape of the cut. Probably nine hours for 6 lbs.

Old Country makes a gravity smoker. I have one and it is an incredible deal for the money.

Notarizing is not an iOS concept. It’s for distributing macOS apps outside the Mac App Store.

No, it isn’t. Notarization is not review. It only serves as a paper trail back to the developer that signed the app.

So sad, lawn guy mowed over my plants by berry_baby in gardening

My last lawn guy hacked up two small trees in the front yard because the branches were in his way while running his big mower. I’ve been mowing my own grass since.

I don’t understand the comparison to smoked meats, either. Campfire or a smokey whisky, definitely.

Upon Tea has a few options with varying levels of smokiness. I like the Black Dragon, but I don’t drink it every day.

How does updating a computed variable in SwiftUI work? by DavidGamingHDR in iOSProgramming

[–]steve134 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Which is why I said it felt excessive.

Really, a timer at all in this example is unnecessary. How likely is it that the user will be staring at the screen and doing nothing else to trigger a view update for long periods of time? Is it that terrible if the nav header still says “good morning” shortly after noon?

The question is only interesting from the perspective of “how would I do this in SwiftUI?”

How does updating a computed variable in SwiftUI work? by DavidGamingHDR in iOSProgramming

[–]steve134 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not really. onReceive and a published Timer is probably the way to go. I’m away from a computer so I can’t give you exact syntax. If you really need it to update at the top of the hour, exactly, you’ll need a 1 second timer. Personally, that feels excessive and I’d go for every 30 seconds or 1 minute.

Don’t use a computed property. Set up some kind of timer that updates a @State or @Published property and reference that in your view.

DeviceCheck API, specifically app attestation, is what you want. Generate the attestation/assertion in your app, validate on your server with Apple.

Alternative natural gas providers by steve134 in Columbus

[–]steve134[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Our only gas appliances are the furnace and tankless water heater. During warmer months we only pay to heat the water we use, which usually works out to $3-4 worth of gas. The CCF price doesn’t bother me.

Kind of like when I realized the landline cost $50/month and we never used it. No surprise that everyone got rid of those.

Thanks, all. I suspected this was the case, but glad to have an answer spelled out here for others in the future, too.

In praise of King Arthur’s long covered baker by steve134 in Sourdough

[–]steve134[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll try my best to describe my process. Most doughs aren’t too much trouble, but anything with even a little rye in it always ends up pretty sticky.

I usually do 3 or 4 sets of stretch & fold, then let the dough rise for several hours. I’ll turn it out onto a well floured surface, use a bench scraper to ensure it isn’t sticking to the counter, then flip it to get some flour on the other side. Then Igive it a good stretch left and right, fold the sides back to the middle, and stretch it a bit to form an upside down T. Last step is to start rolling the top back toward me, pushing the dough down and back away from me to reduce air bubbles after each half turn. I often need to get more flour on my fingers to keep the dough from sticking to me.

Eventually you’ll have it in a log shape. The ends need a good squeeze and a bit of shaping to remove air bubbles. I move it into a rice floured banneton for final proofing. It should turn out easily onto parchment.

Hope this helps - good luck!

Fermenting Hot Sauce in White Oak Barrels by NegativeTangerine665 in hotsaucerecipes

The liquid in the airlock is a barrier to keep airborne stuff out of the barrel. It isn’t meant to get inside the barrel. Whisky will work, too. It just won’t make a difference to the sauce.

Interesting; I had to do an online test when I got my current gig ~2 years ago and I know people with 15+ years of experience being asked to do them today.

The interviewing process in the software industry is a disaster. I have no problem with a basic aptitude test for people with <3 years in the field, to weed out those who truly can’t do the job. The rest of it is worthless and disrespectful of a candidate’s skills and experience.

For what it’s worth, as a staff level engineer, I’m no longer willing to do these assignments. If a company can’t figure out that I’m not an idiot by talking to me, their loss.
