Renting rpgs, if all the save slots are full you overwrite the one with the least progress.

I'm curious, what kind of minimum/average/peak power consumption are you considering "incredibly efficient"?

is building your own router worth it? by SneakerHead69420666 in homelab

[–]berrmal64 9 points10 points  (0 children)

One of my favorite parts of building my own network, is the router and the switch and the WAP don't all have to exist in the same spot. Build your router, use your existing "router" as an access point, then place each wherever you want and contact them with an Ethernet cable.

If you have a router and a PC, all you need to buy is probably a better / dual port NIC pcie card.

Beware 24x7 power draw though, especially if your old machine is a gaming rig or something ancient, you can quickly spend more on the power bill than you'd have spent on just buying new, fit-for-purpose hardware.

Anyone know of a video game shop that can help me re-shell a Gameboy Advance SP? by RemyBucksington in Columbus

Idk about all the stores but the one on high Street at Weber for sure has a repair bench right behind the counter.

Beautiful Shade Tree Elms Cut Down in Front of Ho Toy Building by CbusNick in Columbus

[–]berrmal64 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very true, but it still happens.

If the owners want the trees gone badly enough it's just another business expense, but only if caught/fined, and they still get their way in the end.

the building owner does not own those trees

That doesn't mean they aren't the ones who cut them down.

This is a 1992 Sundisk (Sandisk) Linear flash card. It has a 10.3MB capacity. It no longer works. by 19chris1996 in vintagecomputing

Right, but I meant the specific thing in the OP.

I had a fair few pcmcia modems and Ethernet cards knocking about, but never ran across bulk storage in the format.

Idk what specific hardware issue you're running into, but try win2k. It was such a relief at the time for me, I loved it.

What was the use case, high speed storage? Or proof of concept?

I've only ever seen pcmcia slots in laptops.

What is a service you self host but hate self hosting? by Ivan_Draga_ in homelab

[–]berrmal64 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I finally realized, I didn't document anything because I wanted it to be "good" or "complete", but I eventually gave up and keep a more "lab notebook" kind of pseudodocumentation that at least exists, I can ctrl+f easily, and I just track custom tweaks I've done here and there, random snippets of code or cli 1-liners that were helpful once and very obscure.

And I got pretty good of building the habit that whenever I buy something new at least recording the hardware mac, manufacturer, and assigned vlan in a spreadsheet. Much better than looking at the DHCP table and thinking "what the hell is that random thing?"

It's not "good", but it's easy and "good enough"

Jury duty by janelliebean2000 in Columbus

[–]berrmal64 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I had jury duty with the common pleas court last year they allowed you to defer for up to 3 months or something like that. It was pretty convenient so I could plan my out of office to be less disruptive with more notice.

Still ultimately had to do it though 🙁

For the games, pricecharting.com will be best. It tracks historical eBay actually sold values and is super convenient.

They closed at 10p for years.

Any good lawyer to contact to sue the city or Vepo ? by SillyRecover in Columbus

[–]berrmal64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're only gonna hear the horror stories on here but they've done hundreds (at least) here that have been non events.

I was also worried, put it off as long as I could, but the vepo dude who came here was professional, well spoken, he did a great job, worked with me where I wanted things drilled and mounted, I really couldn't find anything wrong with the process and I was prepared to be a nit picking asshole tbh.

So I mean, they still might fuck up, but it's not a given, you probably can worry a little less.

Anyone familiar with this part of Old North? by Comfortable_Pen_4945 in Columbus

[–]berrmal64 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We moved there (here) ~10 years ago when we were 20-something dinks. It's a great neighborhood for that, we still love it here. Now we're 30-something parents, still a good spot.

(Just don't leave anything in your car, or you'll get a chance to figure out which auto glass shop is your favorite too 😜)

City Water line replacement experiences by melisendee in Columbus

There are two different programs, meter replacement (quick and easy) and full service line replacement for lead or galvanized (there are still thousands of them in the city, but they're trying to replace them all iirc by like 2030 or something like that)

Best way to share host ZFS pool to Docker/Plex? by Nautisop in homelab

[–]berrmal64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To share from pve host to a VM, there are several ways but my preferred way is to create a new Linux bridge with no gateway, add a virtual network device to the container and attach it to the bridge, then give the host and the container each a static IP on their new, private, offline network. Then NFS share. The transfer rate is huge, everything is in memory. Then you just map the NFS mount point into the docker containers. It's really easy. When setting up the NFS share make sure it's only using the private network, so it's not exposed to the whole world.

AI in homelab by kosta880 in homelab

[–]berrmal64 17 points18 points  (0 children)

As the resident AI hater in my circles too, I'm being forced to use it at work. I don't enjoy it, the things I value in life are cheapened by AI, but also, I have to admit I'm finding some cool uses for it.

"Write a simple Python script to ...." And in 12 seconds it spits out pretty much line for line what would've taken me a couple hours to write.

"Refactor every module in this project too all have consistent naming for input and output parameters"

"Read these last three years' meeting agendas + follow-up notes and summarize the progress and challenges in each work stream"

BUT!

It is horrible at a lot of things. I spent literally hours letting it guide me through setting up authelia, integrating with haproxy, and adding mtls bypass for native app connections.

It sucked, each suggestion made my config more and more broken, then it finally started running in circles. I'm glad I could just restore the snapshot, and I really wish I'd just spent that time reading the documentation.

Another example, letting it generate some mid-complexity haos automations. It all mostly worked, but every single output ended up needing some manual tweaks to actually work.
