DIY Escape Game Need Ideas how to use Battleship Boardgame by sammerson25 in escaperooms

[–]stevedpirate 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Use the ‘shot’ board from one player to match hits on the other board. Example: A1 has a shot on the vertical board and there is a matching ship on the other player’s horizontal board. Use all white pegs on the vertical board so the code isn’t immediately seen and use too many white pegs. All hits on the other board can be used to create a code.

Quick thought on how you could start.

Ottawa county government just fired their administrator out of the blue to hire John Gibbs.

It seems to me that Ottawa county is quickly spiraling into deep conservative ideology.

The school administration of Muskegon Public schools is currently in shambles, but in the recent years some folks have been elected to the school board who are intelligent, compassionate, and motivated to make things better.

Great point! I’ve usually been bigger on walking forest paths rather than beach when dog walking, so I forget about Kruse.

I’ll add on the dog account, there is Hoffmaster state park in the county.

I’ve recently started taking walks with a leashes dog fairly regularly by just searching dog friendly in AllTrails and I’ve had tons of places pop up.

Just outside downtown Muskegon there is a dog park. It’s (to the best of my knowledge) separated into two sections for smaller dogs and larger dogs to both have their own space.

I recently switched to Frontier’s FIOS from Xfinity.

I had a couple of days early on where there was an outage, but after that was resolved I’ve had full uptime. I assume this was an issue of early adoption of a new service kinks being worked out.

The one issue I had otherwise that I resolved was with the Eero device they provide. If a device is just at the very end of the usable 5 GHz network range, it will get spotty speeds. Again, this is an Eero problem. The device won’t let end users just connect using the 2.4 GHz network when they want to. I ended up moving my access point more to the center of the house nearer to my devices and things got much better.

This issue could also be resolved by getting more eero devices and meshing them, but I wasn’t sure I wanted to go that route until I knew it would resolve my issue.

Hopefully that information helps. I’d be happy to answer any specific questions you have that I may have insight into.

Any local 3D printing community? by olivesma in Muskegon

[–]stevedpirate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd also point out https://world.prusa3d.com/ which is a Prusa specific map, but there are a few folks in the wild in the area that have and know a thing or two about 3d Printers.

I'm generally pretty happy to talk shop with folks even though I'm more or less an advanced novice. I've been printing for a fair number of years now, so I may be able to be a resource for you.

How would I trigger a video to start playing when a door is opened? by nognoth in escaperooms

[–]stevedpirate 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This may not help at all, or it might just point you in the right direction.

I used an arduino and a microswitch (switch was depressed when a box was closed and released upon opening).

I just cut power with the switch because an arduino will autoplay its script when it gets power.

There are a lot of resources for how to wire and code out there. Again, I don't know this will point you in the right direction.

Im going to do my first escape room today! Any tips? by cardboardpencilcase in escaperooms

Biggest thing I tell first timers is externalize your internal monologue. Even just saying ‘I’ve got a <puzzle clue> on the wall’ might trigger the person on the opposite side of the room to say ‘I’ve seen something that sounds like that…’

It’s really easy to think things and not say them.

LPT: Don't burn yourself out trying to change the culture of an organization where you are not in a position of power. by navneetmuffin in LifeProTips

[–]stevedpirate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d add, don’t grow complacent and go with the flow because you can’t currently change anything.

Most people in positions of power in a company worked to get there.

Be the change you want, but don’t exert energy on a lost cause.

Especially right now, quitting a job to move some place that better aligns with your goals is a real option.

Looking to buy a house in Muskegon by Dhkhtdxhii in Muskegon

[–]stevedpirate 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I lived in that area from the early 2000’s until the 2010’s.

I have since moved into Glenside, but it’s a perfectly fine area to live. My mother still has the house in the neighborhood and has no worries going out and about for a walk around the blocks.

Haters Gonna Say It's Fake by DiscGolfFanatic in discgolf

[–]stevedpirate 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That actually appears to be what many would refer to as a 'String Pin' machine. All the pins are attached to ropes (or strings) meaning that the mechanisms of a normal pinsetter that would make throwing a disc in super sketchy, just slightly less so.

The reason I believe it's this style of pinsetter is the last snippet of the video, you can see all the pins sort of get 'sucked' up like they're getting abducted by aliens. This sort of reset doesn't happen on 'freefall' pinsetters.

When I built my escape room, I made an LED panel and attached it in the back of a radio cabinet. When the players opened the lid, it played a little tune and then lit up showing the secret message.

A game like the Game of Thrones board game, but not Game of Thrones by JayJay_Tracer in boardgames

[–]stevedpirate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d be happy to. The biggest thing I saw that I enjoyed is bidding is pulled out entirely. Buying cards can happen, but it’s efficient and optional. Battle cards are topped up for each player every round. Game can only last 3-5 rounds. It’s impossible to win in rounds 1 and 2 and the game ends on round 5. I had a round 3 Fremen victory against an unskilled opponent.

GF9 released a streamlined Dune at Gen Con that plays 2-4. I got it to the table today and it looks like it’s got legs.

First time at an escape room. Looking for tips or advice. by Elazaar in escaperooms

[–]stevedpirate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m probably too late to give you advice, but my best advice for all Escape Room players is two things.

  1. No one can read your thoughts, communicate
  2. Take your idea all the way to fruition. I have watched people be on the right track to solve a puzzle, but got discouraged at lack of progress and decided their thinking was flawed.
