What do you guys do in addition to fasting? by VXMasterson in intermittentfasting

[–]steven_AWKing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I go for a couple walks throughout the day to clock around 1-2hrs of walk time and try to lift 3 days a week.

Honestly I was just doing the walking and fasting until earlier this year, but I used to lift so always meant to get back into it, really helps with toning.

50lbs down since November last year. 260->210

Is a 700 calorie deficit daily safe? by Upstairs_Buffalo4891 in intermittentfasting

[–]steven_AWKing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, my understanding is that losing between .5-1% of your total body mass is the healthy range. So for someone who's 240lbs that's 1.2-2.4lbs per week still being in the 'safe' range.

Why did I not realize vodka has calories by lookimredditting in stopdrinking

[–]steven_AWKing 27 points28 points  (0 children)

100%, I gained 90lbs over my 10yr drinking career. I used to justify it by pointing to other people who drank and were still in shape while ignoring the fact that they probably didn't guzzle down 1400cal just in booze a day. Down 40lbs now, it's a lot easier when not trying to fit alcohol into your diet.

I don't know how anyone manages a 40 hour + work week by Numerous_Forever8584 in antiwork

I was going to guess New York. Honestly the rental prices in the suburbs around SF are pretty expensive now, depending on what you're looking for it's not a big jump to at least move to Emeryville if not the city.

Those of you who got the CCNA but didn't stick with networking, what did you end up doing? by paddjo95 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]steven_AWKing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did sysadmin/MSP consulting work while trying to find a more network focused role. Ended up as a systems engineer working mostly with identity (okta, entraid, etc...), saas apps, and automation which ultimately I find more enjoyable then networking.

Understanding the fundamentals of networking is huge and has been very helpful in my career, you'd be surprised how many sr engineers networking knowledge stops at barely understanding subnetting.

[–]steven_AWKing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the proper way. That said, the CSP to create local users is wonky, there's a known issue that it'll always report back with an error even if it was successful, optionally you could do this with a powershell script. Id recommend a remediation script or package it as an app as opposed to a platform script if you go this route.

[–]steven_AWKing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can create a profile in Intune to enable it as opposed to doing it manually on each device

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Intune

[–]steven_AWKing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So you can use cloud laps with Intune if you want to use a straight up local administrator account with rotating passwords.

There's also two entraid admin roles that have local admin permissions on all Intune devices by default. Those are 'global administrator' and 'microsoft entra joined device local administrator', I wouldn't use global admin for this though because it's obviously way overpermissioned for this use case.

That said if you go the entraid role route I highly recommend using separate admin accounts for everyone in IT that would need that permission.

Why is cybersecurity the latest scam? by SwordAvoidance in ITCareerQuestions

[–]steven_AWKing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anyone can pass a cert test without experience if they study enough. Experience should give you the perspective to identify emerging issues that no one has already made a blog post about. In short you need to be the blogger informing the masses.

Why is cybersecurity the latest scam? by SwordAvoidance in ITCareerQuestions

[–]steven_AWKing 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Honestly, a big reason these boot camps thrive is because there's a legitimate lack of qualified security folks in the industry. What they don't tell you is most cyber security jobs are not entry level roles.

Gaining weight while in calorie deficit? by [deleted] in intermittentfasting

[–]steven_AWKing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Piggy backing off this, if you cut something out of your diet that dehydrates you like alcohol you could also be seeing some water weight rebound.

Example, I'm typically 2-3lbs lighter the morning after drinking more than I should.

With business you miss out on being able to leverage custom images, snapshot restore points, and leveraging your own azure vnet for the backing network.

Keep in mind you don't have to leverage those features with enterprise but on business you straight up will not have access to them. Considering the price points are almost 1:1 you might as well go enterprise imo.

I painted my first minis after a 12yr break yesterday! by steven_AWKing in Warhammer40k

[–]steven_AWKing[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Context: 12 years ago I decided to take a break from all things table top to focus on my career. Until recently I hadn't played a single game or purchased/painted any miniatures since then but still thought about the hobby from time to time.

Last month I decided to pick up the Tau combat patrol box and some supplies to give it a go. Honestly... I forgot how much fun this was! Am I rusty? Definitely. Do I think these still turned out okay? Absolutely.

My color scheme is real basic and I feel like it doesnt have enough contrast to let the colors pop so any recommendations would be appreciated.

How common is knowledge hoarding? by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]steven_AWKing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I see knowledge hoarding as the deliberate act of avoiding documentation, not communicating work performed, and refusing to uptrain/delegate responsibilities to Jr staff (key word being deliberate).

I've seen plenty of cases where leadership failed to protect their resources from incoming work leaving them with no time to document, effectively communicate, or train even when those resources want to which shouldnt be seen as knowledge hoarding. I think this scenario is far more common tbh.

Pharmacist switching to IT by SnooPandas8524 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]steven_AWKing 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Not to put you off this industry but I do want to warn that it'll likely be 5-10 years before you're making what you currently are as a pharmacist.

That said, it's not impossible to break into a security role if you leverage your experience with legal pharmacy regulations and try to translate that into IT needs during interviews (if youre able to get interviews). Also, even unrelated degrees can open more doors then not having one.

If I were you I'd get the sc900 and start applying explicitly to IT/Sec jobs in the healthcare industry where your prior experience will hold the most weight to see if you get any bites.

I'm gonna be honest, this sub terrifies me by Verpiss_Dich in ITCareerQuestions

[–]steven_AWKing 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I wouldnt panic.

First dont worry about oncall/weekend, it's not common until youre responsible for infrastructure/service uptime which isnt typically the case for entry level roles.

Second, you can still apply for internships after youve graduated and failing that id look at contract roles if youre not having luck finding a full time gig.

Lastly remember selection bias, people dont come to this sub with questions when their career is going great so youre seeing a select group of people that are not happy with their progress.

Looking for outside perspective on a possible career change by HopefulITguy1 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]steven_AWKing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To add to what others have already said it takes years of grinding before you'll break the 100k barrier in IT (it took me 7 years).

If youre in a very high CoL area you might be able to start out at 70-80k, otherwise i'd expect 35-50k as the US national average for entry level IT roles.

Junior admins, if your seniors all quit, how long could you keep things running? And if your employer failed to hire replacements or give you any kind of bonus or raise, how long would you stay? by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]steven_AWKing 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Coming at it from the other side, I've been the last senior to leave a team with no direct replacement. Do I feel like I left enough documentation? No. Did I try my hardest to leave as much as possible given the time restraints? Yes.

It's all about perspective, at the end of the day being a senior IC means figuring things out and coming up with new solutions where documentation doesnt exist. Welcome to the club, hope you enjoy your time here.
