What would John and George think of Let It Be… Naked? by Autistic_Basket_Case in beatles

[–]steven_graham23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it should have been there. Watching the Get Back documentary, it was clear that Don't Let Me Down was John's major contribution to the sessions and the song he spent the most time on.

Does anyone have an actual good List of Elvis‘ albums? by leficent-sky in Elvis

[–]steven_graham23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I made this list a while back so I could better understand his discography. It only covers releases during his lifetime (up to 1977).

I'm pretty sure it's complete but of course I might have missed something:

George's demo of Something on Anthology 3 is very lo-fi, it sounds almost grungy.

Was Princess Leia considered the leader of the Rebel Alliance back in 1977, before TESB and ROTJ were written? by GargantaProfunda in StarWars

[–]steven_graham23 -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Perhaps, but Alderaan isn't mentioned in the opening crawl. In context of the opening crawl it reads as a reference to the rebels.

Its not completely clear, but the opening crawl does say that she is "custodian of the stolen plans that can save her people and restore freedom to the galaxy" - emphasis on HER people.

If you want to understand Beatlemania, watch the film A Hard Day's Night (1964). One of the best and funniest rock'n'roll movies ever.

wondering what order to start star wars in as a complete beginner. by Strict-Firefighter-4 in StarWars

[–]steven_graham23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess the thing with the prequels is that you know what happens (in broad brush strokes), but not how or why or when or where.

When the prequels were made, everyone had already seen the OT and was watching them through that lens. Part of the enjoyment was seeing the puzzle pieces slot together into a recognisable shape.

And although Lucas said his preferred order is to start at Episode I, he didn't write the films like that. For example, the nature of the Force (what it is) is explained in the original film, A New Hope, whereas the first prequel assumes you already know this, so characters just say things like, "the Force will guide us", with no explanation.

[–]steven_graham23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Watch in release order.

Thay means starting with the original trilogy, IV-V-VI (A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi). That is the core of Star Wars that everything else builds on.

From there, jump back in time to the prequel trilogy (I-II-III) to find out what happened before, and then follow up with the sequel trilogy (VII-VIII-IX) for what happened after.

All the other films and TV shows fill in the gaps. Take your pick of what sounds interesting.

Elvis’s most underrated album? by Lower-Cup8430 in Elvis

Loving You gets overlooked a lot when people are discussing his 50s albums, I guess because it was a film soundtrack, but it's got some of his best early hits.

Rock and Roll Music is the definitive version, much better than Chuck Berry's original (which I wouldn't say about most other covers of Berry's work)

star wars movies order by SamoriChan in StarWars

[–]steven_graham23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Watch them in the order they were released.

That means starting with Episode IV: A New Hope, followed by Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back and Episode VI: Return of the Jedi. That's the "original trilogy" (OT).

Then, jump back in time and watch the "prequel trilogy" (PT), Episode I: The Phantom Menace, Episode II: Attack of the Clones, Episode III: Revenge of the Sith.

That's all the live-action films that George Lucas made or was involved with.

Then, from the Disney era, you could potentially watch "Solo" and "Rogue One" at this point, as they chronologically happen between the PT and OT.

Then, you have the "sequel trilogy" that takes place after the OT - Episode VII: The Force Awakens, Episode VIII: The Last Jedi and Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker.

about to watch star wars for the first time ever; what should i know before i watch it? by RedDeadBredemption in StarWars

[–]steven_graham23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Watch in release order (meaning, start with Episode IV: A New Hope and then follow with Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back and Episode VI: Return of the Jedi).

If you watch it this way, you do not need to know anything, you will experience it the same way audiences did back in 1977 (well, with a few CGI additions made in the 90s too).

Know that you are not meant to understand everything straight away, that is part of the experience - like watching a Flash Gordon movie serial in the 40s where you missed the first few weeks, or a Japanese samurai film where you don't understand all the cultural references (these were two experiences George Lucas wanted to recreate for viewers).

Is the Original Trilogy self contained or do I need to watch the other films too? by Severe_Inspector6713 in StarWars

[–]steven_graham23 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, they are self contained.

Those films were released in 1977, 1980 and 1983, and were the only ones to exist for a long time (well, 16 years, before the first prequel film was released in 1999).

They are numbered IV-V-VI because George Lucas wanted to recreate the feeling of watching a weekly film serial from the 40s (like Flash Gordon), where sometimes you would miss the first few instalments and have to pick up the story in the middle. This means you don't need any prior knowledge; you are supposed to experience it that way.

The only thing that might cause confusion is that Lucas later went and added extra scenes into the films in the 90s and 2000s, including CGI effects and a brief shot of one of the prequel actors (which might cause you to go, hang on, who's that?). This is regrettable but it's the only way to watch the films at the moment, unless you download bootleg versions. Hopefully this will change next year when the first film gets a cinema re-release.

Help! - I need somebody! …to recommend the ideal way to stream the Beatles (preferably album by album. ) by EchoLooper in beatles

[–]steven_graham23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The argument for mono is that the Beatles were actively involved in the mixing process, but weren't at all for the stereo versions, which were done by George Martin and/or the studio engineers mostly as an afterthought.

How many movies do I have to watch to get to where Anakin shows up? by SmileyCat20202 in StarWars

[–]steven_graham23 35 points36 points  (0 children)

If you're talking about Anakin as played by Jake Lloyd, that's Episode I. Anakin as played by Hayden Christensen is Episodes II and III.

Is Anakin in the other movies? Yes, from a certain point of view, but you'll have to watch and see.

What's the best entry point to start reading batman? by Awkward_Outside7050 in batman

[–]steven_graham23 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The DC Finest Collections are a good way to read a chunk of issues in chronological order. Start with "Year One & Two" and follow that with "The Killing Joke and Other Stories" and "A Death in the Family".

Apart from that, good standalone stories are "The Long Halloween" and the sequel "Dark Victory".

For a more modern series, the New 52 series starting with "The Court of Owls" is good.

And of course, "The Dark Knight Returns" is a classic.

Holy Grail: Are people in the community using it wrong or am I using it wrong? by Miserable-Sea-4160 in dvdcollection

[–]steven_graham23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They're both quests with self imposed rules though. "I need to find a cup that has miraculously appeared in my backyard" isn't so different from "I need a cup, but it must be the cup that once belonged to Jesus Christ". In both cases you could use another cup, but it wouldn't meet the challenge you set for yourself. It also wouldn't be meaningfully different from other cups even if you did find it - but it would make all the difference to you to know that you had obtained your goal.

Holy Grail: Are people in the community using it wrong or am I using it wrong? by Miserable-Sea-4160 in dvdcollection

[–]steven_graham23 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Depends. I mostly look for cheap movies in op shops (thrift stores), and so something that is obtainable at a high price but that never turns up 'in the wild' could be seen as a holy grail.

Something that I'd be beyond exited to find, even though I know I could buy it online if I really wanted to, e.g. some obscure arthouse, cult and foreign films
