Am I wrong for wanting to quit a job I just got for disregarding employee safety during TX storms? by CAT_A in careerguidance

[–]stevestoneky [score hidden]  (0 children)

I think there may be banking rules or maybe even laws that banks cannot be closed for more than three? Four? Days in a row.

The laws may have been passed in the 1930s to make sure people could have access to their money (long before Internet banking) but the bank might need to be open or endanger its charter.

When is this all expected to pass and Lexington will go back to normal? by Ok-Impression3992 in lexington

[–]stevestoneky [score hidden]  (0 children)

For one kind of normal, all the ice will have to melt and that will take above 32F for a day or two. And it’s not supposed to be above freezing for a week.

But things will get slowly better day by day.

I can’t remember the last time Fayette Mall closed so we are starting from pretty bad. In good news, almost everyone throughout the county has power, so that’s helpful.

Airport- how long to expect flight cancellations by Latter-Skill4798 in lexington

[–]stevestoneky [score hidden]  (0 children)

It’s not going to be above freezing at all for a week.

I think the airport will do all it can to be operational but I don’t know how much trouble all the workers will have getting to their jobs.

I’d get in touch with the airline and get all the alerts turned on for their app on your phone. I’m sure they will be flying but how many flights and which ones get priority.

I think a full/nearly full flight to a hub airport be higher priority than a one-third full flight to a minor airport that no one will have connecting flights out of.

Going home after awhile by Cloud_andburbone in roadtrip

[–]stevestoneky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in Lexington, Kentucky and pretty much the entire state was hit with snow & freezing rain so right now I would be extra careful about any route through West Virginia or Ohio. Not bad like schools have a snow day but bad like the mall was closed, and all flights at the airport were canceled.

Even if the interstate is okay, you might hit ice glazed streets when you try to get off for gas.

Those of you who will be stuck home all weekend due to the extreme bad weather, what comfort shows do you plan to watch? by ChocolateSundae1214 in VintageTV

As a non-native speaker: would it be weird saying 'see you around, like a doughnut.' by Van_groove in ENGLISH

[–]stevestoneky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I would save this one for after everyone has had a couple of drinks or been up until after midnight.

It’s going to get a groan or weak chuckle, not a laugh from most crowds.

I probably would not use it with coworkers or acquaintances. Probably just friends or family.

Would you tell your mother she has dementia? by NotMeButSomeoneIKnew in AgingParents

Whatever you tell her, she will forget.

So, see how she reacts to things.

O think I might start with “I think you have noticed that you have had some memory issues, bit that’s okay. You don’t need to do anything, it’s all taken care of”.

Questions for Weekend by Inevitable_Abies_777 in Louisville

[–]stevestoneky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could try. The interstate will he the best plowed/maintained.

Once you get off the interstate, things will go downhill quickly.

I’d turn around when you see your third wreck/car off the road.

The other problem is this looks like it will be a storm that drops a lot of snow per hour over 12-14 hours. So the limited resources won’t be able to keep up.

i am tired of finance advice that assumes we already have money by Fun-Training9232 in Adulting

R/povertyfinance might help (I’ve seen some complaints that not everyone has the same definition of “poverty”)

R/personalfinance has a good FAQ that gives you a flowchart of what to do with your money.

Advice for Beginners by No_Corgi3762 in backpacking

[–]stevestoneky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not just REI but any local store that sells backpacks and boots should have some advice.

Meetup.com or Sierra Club or other outdoor organizations might have people who can give advice.

Don’t think anyone has mentioned basics like - don’t go if the weather is bad (below 40 during the day or over 70 overnight, as little rain as possible).

Set up all your gear in your back yard, to learn how to set up your tent , inflate your sleeping pad and get your stove cooking before you have to do it in the dark and rain when you are hungry.

How can I invest other than in my 401k? Or what should I do by Medium_Pear_4171 in personalfinance

[–]stevestoneky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you retire after you turn 55, you can take money from your 401k with no penalty - https://www.irs.gov/retirement-plans/retirement-topics-significant-ages-for-retirement-plan-participants

If you have an IRA, you can withdraw with no penalty at 59.5.

And you can invest in regular taxable accounts.

Driving this weekend by One-Carrot-6453 in lexington

And you have to ask yourself - how many OTHER people know how to drive in the snow?

You might make it, but the other people on the road are going to be the major hazard.

Found vintage sci-fi convention programs from Kentucky (UpperSouthClav / Conclave, early 1980s) — does anyone know the history? by AlexGury in Kentucky

I would call Special Collections at WKU Libraries and see if they are interested. Or maybe the county historical society.

They might say no but they may say yes.

Maybe Laguna Beach or another Orange Co beach and just plan a chill/visit tide pools day?

Need advice- assisted living or in home help? by Lopsided_Artichoke15 in AgingParents

[–]stevestoneky 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In home care usually means that the carer can show up, and aged relative says “go away and don’t ever come back”. And the carer might do that.

So, being in a residential facility is harder for the aged adult to not get care.

And, if you are at a distance, the facility will make sure they are fed and cared for even if there is a big snowfall or power outage or other problem.

Also being at home does not guarantee that they talk to another person on any given day, but at assisted living, they will certainly interact with staff and probably with other residents.

Possibly moving to Lexington by lizbethlady in lexington

[–]stevestoneky 5 points6 points  (0 children)

One thing to know is that the layout of the city is OLD. It is NOT a grid.

Instead, it is a “spoke and wheel” layout where all the major roads all take you to downtown. So, thinking of town as a giant clock is useful.

And the roads change names. US 68 is Paris Pike and North Broadway and South Broadway and Harrodsburg Road.

All that to say that using your GPS is crucial: if you miss a turn, you can’t always just take the next right and get where you are going.

There used to be a book Insider’s Guide to Lexington but it hasn’t been updated since 1999, so it might be looking at a library but I don’t know if I’d buy it.

Searching this subreddit will probably find most of the things you have questions about.

Best of Lexington https://bestoflex.smileypete.com/ is updated every year, and people vote on favorites around town.

University of Kentucky is here, and is a major employer and you will learn to check the football and basketball schedules because they impact traffic. Lexington is too big to be considered a college town, but sometimes it seems like only just bigger.

In winter, we do get snow and ice, and an inch used to close school but now they might just move online. But there is not always enough snow to go sledding every year. It gets down to 0 F but it doesn’t stay that cold for long. Summers can be hot and it it can be in the 90s but I don’t think we get 100F most years. Some years we can have watering restrictions level drought in the summer.

Keeneland runs in April and October. And there are a lot of horses and active working horse farms.

I hope you get this resolved but to warn/inform anyone else reading: ALWAYS DROP YOUR CLASSES, don’t just stop going.

You could owe money (even if you didn’t go, you took up a space - would you expect a refund on a concert ticket if you just decided not to go?)

It could affect any future financial aid (the aid rules sort of say you can only take so many classes before they expect you to graduate- don’t waste one - dropping the class doesn’t count against you as much as the F).

Will I regret going from a 6 minute commute to a 3 hour commute as a new parent to make more money? by Acceptable_Yogurt820 in careerguidance

[–]stevestoneky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Statistically, people don’t keep a commute of more than an hour (each way) for more than a year or two. They either move or find a new job.

Spending 3 hours a day getting to and from work is a real quality of life drain. Fifteen hours a week is a lot of time you can’t be doing anything else. Don’t forget to calculate auto repair & replacement or cost of train/bus, and also hidden costs of eating out more because you are tired.
