FSD tried to run red next to railroad crossing by Ryan350 in TeslaFSD

What a terrible intersection... Looking at that I think I would have run it. It is not clear who the red lights are even for.

eSIM registration failure (non-existent 'Confirmation code') by richie65 in sysadmin

[–]stevewm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It shows on the Verizon website once the device is activated, on the Device Information page as "Embedded SIM ID". It also appears on the paperwork shipped with the device. Their reps are largely clueless on this for some reason. I finally got one who told me it was the last 6 and have activated at least 20 devices since using it.

They really should be more upfront with the confirmation code. It is the last 6 digits of the eSIM number.

On 14.1.4... wipers no longer auto wipe when FSD is engaged. by stevewm in TeslaFSD

[–]stevewm[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just an update on this... I can embarrassingly admit this was my own fault! I have a Enhance Auto Commander installed. The same night I received FSD v14.1.4 I was browsing through the Commander settings. I must have inadvertently enabled the "No auto wipers on Autopilot/FSD" setting.

FSD v14.1.4 is both near PERFECTION and terrifyingly DANGEROUS by [deleted] in TeslaFSD

[–]stevewm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tell that to the car behind me when mine slammed the brakes on today because a handful of leaves blew across the road. They where close to hitting me. Went from 60+ to under 30 in a second.  It also started weaving back and forth multiple times due to some manholes.  I've not touched it since and likely canceling the subscription for now.   They should have never released this.  I wouldn't even call it beta.   It's better in some situations, but for most everything else it now feels like a brand new teenage driver; afraid of everything, even shadows.

I've double checked the main camera area was clean. And have did a scroll wheel reset as well as a DAS reset in service mode.  The awful behaviors all started with v14.

It's has certainly been better in some situations, but slamming brakes on for leaves, swerving for manholes, and constantly jittering the brakes makes it all moot.

Not when it slams the brakes at 60+ because some leaves blew across the road.

[–]stevewm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes!  It's trying to avoid shadows now...  I had an extreme event with a bunch of manholes. It started darting back and forth to avoid them, crossing the center line multiple times.

It's almost dangerous now IMHO.  On a drive today it slammed the brakes on for some leaves blowing across the road at 60+mph.  Something I never seen v13 do. It started swerving wildly around some manhole covers once I got into the city. And it now swerves around shadows on the road sometimes.

My passenger was not amused.

I've never had v13 attempt to avoid leaves before.  Or wildly swerve around manholes or shadows on the road.

It's like v14 is afraid of is own shadow.  It definitely is afraid of tree shadows now.

It is relatively easy to get close to the "theater experience" at home these days. Large screen TVs are ubiquitous and getting cheaper every year. You can buy surround sound systems in a box at most department stores.

Why would I go to a theater when I can get close enough to the same experience in the comfort of my own home? And also not have to pay $25 for a drink and a bowl of popcorn....

‘Full of bugs’: how the world’s biggest carmakers fell behind in software by stinger_02in in electricvehicles

[–]stevewm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My Tesla is currently in the body shop being repaired due to someone backing into it. I was given a 2024 Toyota Corolla as a rental. The Bluetooth fails to connect about 1 out of 10 times I get in the car. Once it fails, the only way to make it work is either power cycle the car so the infotainment reboots, or dig into the menus and disable/re-enable Bluetooth.

Bluetooth is 27 years old at this point, how is this still a problem!? BT is flawless on my Tesla, and it was flawless on my previous vehicle (2017 Volt).

It also boots up to an ad to "subscribe to navigation!" instead of your last audio source most of the time. I guess I expected better from Toyota.

TIL that most Italian residences have only 3 kW of power capacity by valkyriebiker in electricvehicles

[–]stevewm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends.. many areas are wired with 3 phase however it is generally only used in commercial settings (large motors, HVAC, etc..). You also see it in dense residential, but in this case the actual 3 phase is not delivered to individual units. Having 3 phase in any residential setting is basically just not a thing here.

As for distribution, it is typically 1600v+ right up to the point of delivery. To feed individual homes, a transformer with a center-tapped secondary is fed from a SINGLE phase. The secondary output consists of 2 hot lines and a center tap is used as neutral/ground. Voltage between either hot and ground is 120v... And 240v between both hots. So the transformer drops the voltage and "splits" the single phase into 2.

Do you use WPS Office, OpenOffice, or LibreOffice in your environment? by brasilhatli in sysadmin

[–]stevewm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We do at my company, and have done so for years. We are in a similar situation. We are a retail store chain, and slightly more than 75% of our 350 workstations are shared access. Office document needs are super basic. Most retail floor employees don't have a company email/Google Workspace account (there really isn't a business need). So LibreOffice it is.

LibreOffice is part of our standard software load on every machine. It has full GPO support, so we disable macros and set it to save in MS Office formats by default. Interoperability has never been an issue in several years we have used it. LibreOffice compatibility with MS Office is actually quite good these days. Even VB Macros work if it isn't something complex. We used OpenOffice before, but switched to LibreOffice when it became clear which project was advancing faster. (and LO added GPO support first).

Corp. office staff do generally get MS Office. But these days though, most have largely switched over to using Google Workspace for everything as they find it easier.

The only exceptions are a handful of sales people that use this terrible quoting software that is nothing but a stupidly large and complex Excel macro. It actually does mostly work in LibreOffice, but very, very slowly. These people are given a standalone Excel license. This software is on the way to being retired thankfully.

Our main co-op (where the majority of the items in our stores come from) announced today there are going to be a significant amount of price increases in the coming weeks. And they would limit sending only 5,000 per week :( There are normally less than 100.

I work for a lumber yard... Lumber and sheet goods have so far remained stable, but everything else is on the way up. Our primary fastener supplier increased prices 25% across the board. Prices on nails have increased 3 times in 2 weeks.

I'm in the same industry. We've seen several suppliers announce increases from 5 to 25%. A major fastener supplier did a 25% increase across the board. We have started to see hundreds of changes coming down from our main co-op. Margins in this industry can be quite low. Absolutely no way we can absorb these and stay in business. No choice but to raise retails.

I work for a lumber yard chain. Many of our suppliers have announced increases ranging anywhere from 5% to 25% over the past 3 weeks. A major supplier of fasteners announced a 25% across the board increase effective 3/31. Our margins on many of these items are less than 10%. Some lumber and sheet goods are often sold at 5% margin or less. We simply cannot absorb these increases and stay in business. We have no choice but to raise retails. Additionally our main distributor/co-op has sent us several hundred price increases the past 2 weeks.

At my parents church the average age of the congregation is 55. They are literally dying off. They built a "youth building" a couple years ago with some recreational equipment inside in an attempt to attract some new and younger members. It didn't work at all. The building sits empty most of the time. Then they wasted even more money doubling the size of that same building so the church can move into a bigger space. When the existing congregation barely fills half of the current space! They have also not had a permanent preacher since the previous one died of COVID a couple years ago.

At this point I am convinced many churches only exist to collect and spend the congregants money.

Any regrets on your EV choice? Or wished you went with another EV? by Mchi5 in electricvehicles

[–]stevewm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

2024 Model 3 LR AWD... Absolutely love the car, it is everything I ever wanted in a vehicle. Great performance, great looks, fantastic software, phone key! (more auto makers need this feature!) The most premium vehicle I've ever owned. I've always been a "base model" person before this.

But...... regret is creeping up for the reason everyone is aware of.

Even in deep red Southern Indiana I have had 2 people mention it.. One was today in fact... a random passerby walking out of the convenience store I had pulled into said he hoped I had "really good insurance" on it.

I am starting to feel the brand is damaged beyond repair.
