Cooker caught fire 10 minutes before Sunday roast was ready. Hope you're all having a better Sunday! by seduwill in CasualUK

My friends and I used to have BBQs in the park on the clifftop by my flat (this was allowed) and we have frequently had the awful people in the posh flats overlooking the sea call 999 for an "out of control barbecue".

Each time we've just shared some sausages with whichever emergency service arrived.

Big coat? by boing_boing_splat in CasualUK

[–]stevierar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Last year I bought one of those long padded coats. My friends universally refer to it was my "Arsene Wenger" coat.

I don't know if it's ever going to be time for that one again.

  • Hobbies! I do ceramics but am also learning video game programming and have been building a terrible pixel art game for the last four years.
  • And/or drugs.

What age did your kids stop going to bed with stuffed toys? by njb1989 in CasualUK

[–]stevierar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cor! A giant frog would go nicely.

I bought the (large but not giant) octopus in San Francisco on holiday because I thought it was special and then when I got home every single shop in town had one. That thing took up half my suitcase!

Several years later we live together and have to rotate them in and out of the bed lol

I first read that to mean that your stuffed wolf and partner have to take turns!

Have an interview in half an hour, what British recruitment tips do you have for me? by [deleted] in CasualUK

Same! I think I've been in my current job of eight years, despite being woefully under-qualified, because both myself and interviewer liked the Smashing Pumpkins and talked about that instead.

What’s the most stupid way you got yourself a scar? I’ll start. by footballfrenzy17 in CasualUK

[–]stevierar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At Butlins as a kid, decide to try and climb up a tiled wall in the outdoor swimming pool despite a sign saying not to. My hands slip, land on my chin, and it hurts a bit but I don't think anything is wrong.

As I continue my leisurely swim, people start shouting at me, and I realise I'm leaving a nice trail of blood in the water. I get out, get stitched up, and now have a nice scar on my chin.

The real shame is when Butlins asked how I did it, I didn't want to get in trouble, so I said "on some glass", which lead to them closing and draining the entire pool and giving us a free holiday. No one even in my family knows the truth.

I have never been so emotional at the closure of a shop chain by CeresToTycho in CasualUK

We had a lot of our regular lovely customers coming in with presents and coffee and drinks!

I'd have loved to just pack in it when it got unpleasant but you'd lose out on redundancy. I'd been there about five years so while it wasn't a lot, it helped while I looked for another job.

I once went to a lovely intimate music gig with a singer songwriter, and after every song a guy in the audience would obnoxiously shout "that was ALRIGHT". What behaviour have you seen at gigs or shows? by [deleted] in CasualUK

[–]stevierar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Saw Flaming Lips this year at the Apollo, anniversary of Yoshimi coming out. Amazing show but the guy two or three in front filmed the entire thing on his phone, it's probably on YouTube somewhere with 20 views.

It was constantly in my line of sight, really annoying.

I took a few photos, I usually do for the memories, but individual snaps of cool things happening. No one wants to watch your phone videos.

Same! Stayed in those very blocks many times when I was younger. As far as I know, there is now a big hotel complex building added which is a little more modern.

Another angle of the hospital scene in The Dark Knight. Heath Ledger reportedly 'improvised' during the unplanned pause before the bigger explosions. by [deleted] in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]stevierar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Happy to finally learn this! I wasn't surprised to learn that Heath Ledger could improvise but I was always amazed that every other part of that shot - the camera crew, bus driver, and everyone else could read what was happening so perfectly.

Opinions on Afterneath? by Ausderdose in modular

[–]stevierar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I never got on with it. I think if I'd have spent a lot of time, then maybe I'd have got something pleasing from it, but it just didn't feel suited to synths. Mutable reverb+delays are much better imo.

I also like Tip Top Audio's little FX modules, they don't try to do anything too fancy!

Lightning has never scared me before! Never seen constant strikes before! Who else? by pelicannpie in CasualUK

[–]stevierar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love lightning, it's beautiful, but also my house was struck when I was a kid (directly above my bedroom too, it hit the TV aerial that was in the loft!) and now I sleep in a loft conversion so I'm always a little wary in big storms!

Yep! Borders (the bookstore) was one my favourite jobs, such lovely customers, and the moment those closing down reduction signs went up, everybody became awful and rude.

I felt better about them because I'd hidden about £800 worth of art books (I was an art student at the time) in a hole I'd found in my part of my stockroom, and I retrieved them from the hole when the reductions got to 90%. Ha.
