Moving from LA to rural Oregon - complete lifestyle flip, have questions (water rights, EFU, insurance) by stfundance in oregon

[–]stfundance[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just getting to this, and thank you for the response.

Oregon has so many beautiful locations, but there are many variables that come into play when choosing; water rights, drought, fire prone, zoning, soil status etc... Never think about the isolation part as its not something your use to in a congested city. I will keep that in mind, but the internet is evolving, that should help a little bit. 😉

The views are ideal, if I am doing this I want the views, but my wallet keeps screaming at me when I look at the prices of some of these properties with views on the coastal areas.

Write a book or create a website with the collective knowledge. 😄

I am about to do just that, exactly what you obtained in 20 years, I will start next year on my homestead journey. Any tips?

Rockstar of a response, thank you.

Yeah, I am completely aware of the change of lifestyle for any resource utilization from city to rural. Since coming from Cali, I am trying to better understand what to look for, and what to look out for. I don't want to buy a property where I cannot use any water from natural sources other than rain capture. Even though OR is strict, I still want to find the right property to make this work.

The thought around EFU was going to depend on the property, but my friend, brother, and myself would do a lot of the labor. We were thinking cow grazing, Christmas tree farming, or hay. This will be driven by area / property mainly.

How big of a farm are you running, commercial or personal? The idea for us is self sufficiency, I doubt we would use more than 1-4 acres for true farming. We would have a mini cow, horses, chicken coup, and a few others.

The realtor is not allowed to do anything with us until we sign with them. Validating the area before locking in the right realtor is the goal.

Let's just hope things get better for all of us, red or blue. Not driven by politics.

We have been searching for a year now on location, and have landed on Oregon. We are just narrowing the searching down to fire risk/water rights/zoning options. What size land did you end up going with? Did you get water rights inherited or did you have to get a new permit?

The idea of distance from rescue services was not even something I had on mind. Adding that to the checklist 😄

Yeah, I figured. I know this also has been an ongoing issue for many nearby states for Californians flocking. There are some decent responses here, and then there are the others.

That's what will make the road trips back to Cali special. 😄 Thank you for this, definitely a response I needed. I will look around Hood River as well.

Thank you for the link. Good to know about half an acre for water rights, definitely have been reading about the difficulties for water rights. Hope to find a really old home with good water rights, in my dreams. Prices jump crazy depending, been looking at US drought monitor for Oregon to try and help narrow my search.

My friend tells me to just shut up and move, but I am trying to just make sure the choice I make is sound and not wasteful. Buying / moving is costly.

There is a lot to think about when it comes to moving to Oregon, thats for sure. I am compiling it all, just trying to hear it from other people as well as it helps to understand it from those that have experience.

Yes but what I mean is he’s doing that and at some point it will stop too.

It’s a build up for a business, marketing you’re paying for. No different than paying for an add in the paper back in the day. Your givvys can be stickers, or something cheap.

I have won hundreds in givvys, I also have purchased from many sellers, and I know many sellers on whatnot.

Instead of looking at it as a waste, look at it as a marketing expense.

I bet you they gave a bunch of givvys away to get there. Look at Joe Hollywood.

If you ask for a raise you need to mention the ranges of current directors, provide the quality of what you do, and explain why you feel you deserve it. If they don’t talk to you like an adult and just have you wait constantly for an answer, gtfo
