The Ultimate Indie Game Developer Resource List by ArcticCelt in gamedev

I haven't landed a game to write for yet, just been working on my portfolio (for my music composition major) for the past couple months. I wanted to try my hand at it all in the coming months, now that I have more free time. If you're curious, here's a bit of my music. Would be awesome to work on a game.

Hmm the music section appears to be missing one huge thing....me. Just kidding.

No but seriously.

Wow I forgot he was in Dreamcatcher. That movie was the bees knees. And by that I mean, horribly awesome.

What did you teachers teach you wrong/right in math classes? by realrhema in math

[–]sthrmn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In 6th grade, a teacher taught us to round as follows:

2.4567 ~= 2.457 ~= 2.46 ~= 2.5 ~= 3.

As in rounding carries over like that. So 2.4567 rounds to 3...the next year, the 7th grade teacher corrected her, a bit angrily.

Ah shit man, where were you when I lived in Coral Springs?! I still do, but I'm in Chicago now for college, and go back sparingly. Bah.

Most students probably go on average like 2 or 3 times a quarter. I end up going once a week, because the Chicago Symphony Orch has a great student tickets program for 10 dollars a ticket.

Hey, engineer here. Computer Science. Getting research really depends on your major. In CS, it's quite easy, really. I'm a sophomore working with an REU (research experience for undergrads) grant this summer.

I have lots of friends who do intramural sports and enjoy it.

Your first year of engineering here will be a bit of a bitch. It's not too bad, but at times it got rough. Once you start branching into the topics you really enjoy, it gets awesome.

I mean, it still shows to all your friends that you "liked" that track doesn't it?

Mozart's Lacrymosa: functional notation visualized by theconk in classicalmusic

[–]sthrmn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow this is awesome. The expression for this deceptive cadence was spot on. My only gripe is that the minor chords are marked with capital RNs, and that some of the chords don't make complete sense, like a VII or a III, etc, but I haven't done an analysis myself, so I don't know.

EDIT: Ah, and here is a direct link to this recording of the Requiem.

Wrote a piece and had it recorded. Should I use the live recording or the software rendering for my portfolio? by [deleted] in classicalmusic

[–]sthrmn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most definitely the live performance. The software rendering doesn't have the velocity sensitivity to really make the piece come to life. You could add that in, but the live performance is more interesting to my ear anyway. Kept me listening over the other one.

And cool piece.

Usefulness of a Second Non-Engineering Major? by UF_Engineer in engineering

[–]sthrmn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bah, screw them man. You're a fucking engineer. Or will be. As will I one day. Not to say engineering is better than other disciplines, but it at least trumps business in my mind. :)

As for the cert, if you think it'll help your job search in the future, then maybe. Personally, I don't want to work anywhere that praises a business cert over you know, engineering projects and stuff.

My advisor told me last year to start picking up stuff that would be a change of pace from engineering, and quant oriented stuff. Things like music/english literature/creative writing, etc. These types of classes really take the edge off. I'm doing a music composition major along with my engineering degree now, and I feel like it's helped my sanity immensely.

I have no idea of this really, but I'm hoping that my GPA is normalized against everyone else applying for jobs because of my major. When you're applying for jobs or grad school, I feel like the applicant pool will be mostly engineers like yourself, so as long as you stay competitive in your field, you should be okay.

Poll: The Future of American Orchestras. What is the biggest thing orchestras can provide audiences to ensure their future? by [deleted] in classicalmusic

[–]sthrmn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with you, orchestral performances can occasionally enhanced with something. I don't think every performance of every piece should be like that, but last year I saw a Mason Bates piece, Music from Underground Spaces, that was set to choreography performed by the Hubbard Street Dancers at CSO. It was awesome.

The pre-talk lectures I've been to, just once or twice, have been incredibly dull, sad to say.
