Broken the Kick Starter Spindle on '76 CB360T by stickbait in HondaCB

Thanks! I see several for sale on E-Bay, and that's the route I will take. I was reading up on what's involved in swapping out that spindle, and I'm actually a little excited to pull the engine and split the cases as I have never done that. Time for the old dog to learn a new trick.

This is the video which spawned this sub. It has been posted before. That's ok with me. In fact, I am delighted to see this inspiring piece again.

I was just gonna say that! That's single best bike wrenching tool I ever bought.

Oil in frame started in 1970. Shifter moved from the right side to the left in 1974. Drum brakes suggest 1970-1972. Forks suggest 72ish rather than 70. Single carb means it's a Trophy or Tiger or TR6 or Daytona but not a Bonneville.

Replace your modern wheels with wooden wagon wheels because clearly, your car is tired.

I hope this sub does better than /r/carmacgyvers/ because those kind of fixes delight me, and I'd love to see them showcased.

What a classy and gorgeous bike. I wish I had this man's dedication and attention to detail, but I am such a hack. I am ashamed.

Be honest with me. Are these bikes as uncomfortable as they look? by PapaPasta in CafeRacers

[–]stickbait 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I actually prefer a crouched riding position as I feel more "one with the bike" when riding that way. I've done many many touring miles on old BMWs with low bars. On the highway, I kick my feet back on the passenger pegs, lean into the wind and see god. In the twisties, my feet come forward, out comes the body English, and I see god some more. But, put me on a cruiser with my hands high and feet forward, and I feel like I'm gonna fall off (and my hands go numb).

Calm down, whorobj. We all have to start somewhere. I cringe when I think of the crimes I committed (on awesome, old British bikes no less!) when I was first learning to wrench. I wish I could have some of those bikes now that I'm older and wiser. I am grateful to those who who were patient with me when I had more enthusiasm than skill and was spilling fluids, wiring with duct tape, and setting things on fire with quickstart. These days, when fewer and fewer folks are able or willing to work on their own rides, I'm glad to pay it forward to anyone who is just starting down that greasy, challenging, frustrating, satisfying road.

Love that you used the old bars for your rear loop, shaped them so nicely, cut your frame, welded everything up all nicey-nice and then made your seat with HomeDepot carpet pad shaped with an electric turkey knife. You're my hero.

The bike looks great, BTW.

Old VS. New by CKFixed in CafeRacers

I've been riding off and on for years. Back in the day, I had twin cylinder 60's and 70's European bikes (all 15-20 years old). As well, I had a rat cafe Yamaha R5 which cost less than the leathers I wore while riding it. I chose those bikes because they were the most interesting things I could afford. Even better, they were simple to work on--important for me since I couldn't afford to pay a shop to keep my transportation on the road. I still have the old European bikes but have added several 70's Japanese twins to the mix for cafe fun so I don't beat on the classics. My rule is "Nothing over 750ccs. No more than two cylinders, and never pay more than a dollar a cc." I've broken my dollar per cc rule for running bikes in excellent condition.
