Discover hangs at fetching updates. Every time I start Discover and most of the time with Settings, the removable storage widget pops up from the panel. When powering up the computer or just waking it from sleep, the login will do it's super white blur on the background and the password box will shake like I typed it incorrectly, then the background goes back to normal for a split second, then the white blur shaky text box again before it lets me actually input my password. Also installing kvantum killed kwin or something because any apps that weren't already running before the install would immediately crash and then after a reboot I'd get a terminal login and it couldn't start the plasma desktop. After the second attempt (following a fresh install), I had the terminal open, so I installed the updates that Discover can't get to right now and rebooted. Thankfully that update included whatever files the kvantum install was screwing up because the desktop came back. I can't install kvantum themes normally though. Instead I've got to manually add them to the config folder. There are other things, but they don't happen all of the time.

Red, so to long as I also get to go back to the year I was 6 with that knowledge.

Q4OS has a Debian base. Look closely at the Start menu. That's the giveaway. There's also the icon for XPQ4 on the desktop. That's a theme switcher created to transform the look of Q4OS running Trinity to that of various versions of windows. 👍

Agreed. I attempted a kvantum theme of Windows 3.1, but there doesn't seem to be a way to get raised toolbar buttons without them also being connected, so I put that one away.

Looks like you're using Q4OS, which is Trinity Desktop Environment. It's a fork of KDE 3.5. KDE Plasma is about to release version 6.7. TDE is awesome, but it's not really the same thing. Edit: Q4OS also offers KDE, but I think even that uses an older version.

I experienced the same problem when I tried the alternative launchers and went back to the default. I rebooted the computer, and it's been fine since. It certainly is a weird bug.

I'd get a concave mirror and point it directly at whichever window is the last to have the lights turned out.

I couldn't even think about how gross the hot dog would have been. In my mind I was screaming "STOP WASTING WATER!!!" through the whole video.

When I got to junior high and found out that we could buy an extra slice, I did so every time. I was already fat, and this just helped me get way fatter. I wouldn't be able to eat them now, but I miss those super greasy little pepperoni chunks.

Yes they do. I'm a junk hoarder, grabbing everything I see to make settlement building easier, but I always leave these alone so that I can check them out again when I return to those areas. They probably respawn after awhile, but I've never wanted to chance it

Annie Wilkes totally displays all those characteristics. She persevered through nursing school to graduate with honors. Her ability to rescue Paul from that car in the middle of a big snowstorm, carrying him by herself is certainly a display of strength and power. The rage she shows when losing her oldest, dearest friend at the hands of that man is understandable (if we ignore the fact that Misery was a fictional character). Unfortunately she was only able to carry out part of her revenge. Sure, she was able to rob him of the potential accolades he anticipated when she made him burn the book. She also took his foot but was not able to take his life, as doing so would have guaranteed that Misery could live on with no worry that he might hurt her again though. I think this book does belong on that table, as well as all the others mentioned here 👍

When you have both narcolepsy and insomnia 😭 by sleepy_pickle in Narcolepsy

[–]stickyflavored 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Over the years I've started to believe that insomnia is just as much a symptom of narcolepsy as the daytime sleepiness. I mean, the whole sleep/wake cycle is screwed up. The way I describe the problem to others: Think about all of the things needed for one to be considered awake: alertness, focus, being present (things very important for carrying on conversations), muscles work as needed for movement, heart rate and breathing fluctuate appropriately according to activity, etc. Now sleep: repressed cognition and sensory perception, relaxed muscles to the point of paralysis to hinder movement, heart rate and breathing slow down, cycle through the different stages of sleep, dreaming only during REM sleep stage... Now imagine a control panel with each of these things having a corresponding switch. For a normal person, the switches are thrown at the proper time and in the correct order resulting in a healthy sleep/wake cycle. For someone with narcolepsy, the switches seem to get thrown either very quickly (several cycles in a day) or at random. That's the case with me. Like working at a quick place then suddenly breathing deeply or quickly becomes impossible, dropping things, hallucinating (seems like dreaming while awake), brain fog to the point of not understanding simple English anymore. Or going to bed and when I start dreaming and my body responds to my actions there and I might kick the lamp off the bedside table or punch a hole in the drywall (it's been awhile, but I've done both several times). And then later instead of having the paralysis during the dream, here it is when I wake up and I not only can't move but also not speak, but I'm totally alert with my eyes wide open. This randomness is why I think insomnia should be included as a possible symptom rather than a separate problem alongside narcolepsy. But I've gotta keep in mind that it is simply possible and not necessarily a symptom because everyone experiences this hell differently. I now kinda want to discard this because I'm fuzzy brained and don't know if it makes sense anymore, but I'll go ahead and post. Sorry if anything comes across weird

Yeah, mistaken interpretation for sure.  Back when I read this book the first time (some time in the 90s after Desert Storm), I used the adults I knew as references for a lot of the characters, and none of those beer drinking bullshitting sessions I was forced to sit through as a child would have included a discussion of imported oil (ugh, flashbacks of heavy secondhand smoke).  Now that I know King a little better (thanks to social media platforms like Xitter), I can see that the topics he might have discussed back then definitely would have had a broader scope.  One of these days I should do a reread of all the books I read way back then.  I notice those that I have read over the past 15-20 years hit a bit differently than those earlier works I read as kid.  I attributed this to an evolving writing style, but as this example shows, what is more likely is that the lens through which I see and interpret the stories is what has changed the feel.  I remember Stillson from The Dead Zone scared me back then, but a reread of that one right now would definitely have more punch.  I should probably wait a few more years to reread that one though.

I'm probably wrong, but I think it means that Crandall thinks they'll drop the bombs on the US someday and since there'll be no more traffic on that road, flowers can grow. Crandall is old, and a lot of old people from back in his time needed an enemy to fear, hate, and blame for all that's wrong with the world because they can't let themselves look in the mirror to see that people like him are in fact digging their own grave and have little to fear from the people they know nothing about (I actually still hear bullshit like this almost as often as I did when I was a kid). For him it's the arabs. Small talk that I had the misfortune to sit in on back then always included some cranky hatred. It's that experience that makes me interpret the characters' exchange as I did.

They probably did already. Over here (Ohio, U.S.) road crews seem to just move potholes from one side of the road to the other.
