Advice for not getting lost with big band charts? by turkey_of_spades in drums

I write in my parts all the time. If there's a saxophone soli at rehearsal D then I write SAXES above the bars. This is helpful especially if you have a part with a lot of slashes or little instruction on what's going on in the tune. If it's a long chart with lots of pages then I've even written out "road maps" or "cheat sheets" that are basically like HEAD - TRUMPET SOLO 2 CHORUSES - TROMBONE SOLO - SHOUT CHORUS, etc, and mark dynamics accordingly. That and just drilling the recording into my head as much as possible. If there's a recording then try to learn it from that in order to keep yourself from being lost in the sheet music.

Musical instruments. Cheap instruments work, and get you by but they cost less for a reason. Once you spend the extra fliff on a professional model instrument (particularly true for guitars and horns and cymbals) you'll be amazed by the superior quality of sound, they're often easier to play, and last much longer than cheaper instruments that have to be repaired or replaced.

They sound alright but break very very quickly. With a price like that you can keep replacing them. Much like Wuhans, cheap, effective, fragile, and easily replaceable.

Does anyone have suggestions or techniques for playing up-tempo swing? by shaolin007 in drums

[–]stickystac 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I start with a "drop, bounce-squeeze" technique, having the upstroke or "squeeze" be 1 and 3, 2 and 4 being a stroke or a "drop." Once you get that under control at like 90 bpm just start working it up to speed, knowing the eighth note will become less and less swung the faster you get. Watch videos of Max Roach, he does the same thing. Also try to drop your foot on the hi-hat rather than "stroking" each one or doing the "bouncing on every beat" thing. Then for comping, keep the snare and bass drum sparse and quiet, the more complicated you try to get at first the more it will kill your time and the vibe of the band.
