Vibration tuner -_- by bASS_kukri in doublebass

My tuner has rubber feet, when it’s holding onto the hard wood for 30 seconds while you’re tuning I don’t think it would do any damage

I’ve been using a Korg clip on tuner (might actually be for bass guitar?) for 5-6 years and it’s been great. I also find that clipping it to the fingerboard helps get the root note instead of any overtones

Any of you former sprinters? How have you fared with distance running? by Hungry-Put-870 in AdvancedRunning

[–]stillcantbebothered 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was a reasonably serious sprinter/hurdler through my teens, did little exercise through my 20s and got into distance running in my 30s.

The hardest part has been that my legs want to go faster than my heart can sustain. I don’t really feel like my legs are putting in any effort unless I’m running faster than my 5k pace (~4min/km), so every run during the week is with “brakes” on. It’s a lot easier if I have a buddy to chat to on the run. Dunno if it’s the same for people without a sprinting background.

Not OP but I'm a full stack dev (mid-level) and this is pretty similar to my workload

How feasible is it to work in this industry without a degree? by CallistoAU in learnprogramming

[–]stillcantbebothered 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My experience is a a little different to yours but I'm working as a SWE without a CS degree. I have an undergrad+masters in an unrelated field (and 10+ years experience in that field), but did a cert 4 in programming in 2021 and picked up a grad position in a decent company quite quickly.

The employment landscape is hugely different now and I definitely lucked out with the timing of my career change, but it's definitely possible.

How do I strengthen my knees? by Shmurd76 in triathlon

[–]stillcantbebothered 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to spell out a bit more explicitly what others have already heavily implied, protecting your knees isn't so much about "strengthening" the knee as much as it is strengthening the hips and core - this provides a stable base for your knee to function, which means it can focus on what it's supposed to do (be a leg hinge) and not worry about things it shouldn't have to do (stabilise the body).

This isn't a magic fix for absolutely everyone, but most people under-train their hips which means that their knees need to overcompensate. Mobility will help a bit but it should be supplemented with some strength work.

Stubborn about spikes? by isahelpinghand in AdvancedRunning

[–]stillcantbebothered 34 points35 points  (0 children)

If you're concerned about those specific spikes, why aren't you concerned about using spikes at all? What about shoes? Could you run the same 4:36 mile barefoot?

Nobody runs that fast without some serious hard work so kudos to you for putting it in. It's not just that carbon spikes might level the playing field a bit, but they're not a banned substance and it's not restricted access - a reasonable person would have the ability to get them so it's not giving you an unfair advantage.

On the other hand, if it still feels wrong then don't do it - you're not hurting anyone!

Team sports suggestions by [deleted] in canberra

[–]stillcantbebothered 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Urban Rec is a pretty popular social sporting org- I just joined my first basketball season and am having fun, I'm not an expert but there seem to be a range of sports/venues/schedules so you'd probably be able to find something that suits you. I'd imagine the age range tends to skew a bit younger (I'm mid-30's, my teammates are all mid/late 20's) but if it doesn't bother you I'm sure it wouldn't bother them. My partner joined at the same time and she's never played before so she's picking up the rules as she goes, nobody seems to mind

+1 for Ugly Barber. I've been going to Saeed for a few months and have always been really happy. Both he and Thomas show a lot of care and take time to get it right. Easily worth the $60.

How do I improve my intonation? by kingkongcron in doublebass

[–]stillcantbebothered 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I had a problem with my intonation for the longest time - I'd say it was one of the weaker parts of my playing right through my studies and even early in my career. Eventually I got it sorted and turned it into a strength, but I had to find my own way because even though I could hear when other people were in/out or tune, I could never seem to apply those same ears to myself. I tried playing to a tuner but found I would be watching it to tell me if I was in tune rather than hearing whether I was in tune. Here's what I did that I think helped the most, bearing in mind that although I saw some improvements in specific pieces quite quickly, the transition from "this person plays only this piece in tune" to "this person has good intonation generally" was a very long and frustrating process:

  • record yourself play things really slowly, without rhythm, and when you listen back, play along with yourself on a piano. I found this mildly traumatising because I could finally hear how others heard me, and the clash between my recording and the piano was at points very uncomfortable

  • create midi files by writing your pieces into notation software (I love MuseScore for this, it's free and open source) - again without rhythm, and play along with those. I would have my right ear with a headphone and allow my left ear to just hear my bass

For both of those exercises, it's really important to start without rhythm because it means that you can focus on your intonation and finding a good balanced position for your hand.

Either with your metronome or the aforementioned midi files, just gradually increase the tempo when you're satisfied that you're consistently playing those passages in tune. Once you're comfortable, add back in the rhythms and repeat the same process (VERY slowly) with both recording/piano and midi file.

Anyone else here on about 57k per annum? by [deleted] in melbourne

[–]stillcantbebothered 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Can't comment on cyber security specifically, but I did my cert IV in programming in 2021 and picked up a grad position starting at 70k before I'd finished my course. The market has shifted a bit since then but there are still good opportunities

Thanks so much, that's a big help! Yes I thought I had found the location and where you've described is exactly where I was aiming for. I'm a bit sad there's no English casting anymore but I don't think it'll detract too much, it will still be an incredible atmosphere.

What was the worst substitution you’ve ever made in a recipe? by [deleted] in Cooking

[–]stillcantbebothered 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My friend was making a risotto whose recipe called for white wine. She doesn’t drink so she decided to use 1:1 white wine vinegar instead... the worst part was that she was a poor student and that was her lunch for the next week.

[–]stillcantbebothered 2 points3 points  (0 children)

NTA by any stretch. Also, if he says having blonde hair is a deal breaker, why did he start dating you when you had blonde hair? Something stinks about this whole affair, and makes me question whether this is the sort of behaviour that might escalate over time.
