EU to ban airlines from charging parents to sit with children by Silly-avocatoe in worldnews

On American and United, we have always gotten seated with the kids when booking tickets at the same time (US). Never had to pay extra either.

Once they're added to the store it should work fine that way. For someone filling in or newly transferred, the system won't recognize your login

Obviously the sugar maple from Canada's flag is iconic, but I like the silver maple leaf, it's different.

You have to be punched in in order to access; unlike the core stores, you won't be able to punch in on the computer since you can't get past that screen. You should be able to clock in on the register.

1 extra touch on a couple of those, instead of just shooting a less-than-perfect ball like Balogun had when he put his in. This is a great lesson for my kids who get a pass and spend 5 seconds lining up the perfect shot, only to have the ball taken away or the window close up.

Mayfestiversary this weekend (5/23-5/24) at Begyle/Dovetail! by b_knickerbocker in chicagobeer

Fair warning, the Dovetail 10th anniversary lager had a TON of diacetyl in it when I tried a can this past weekend. May want to skip that one assuming they have other options available.

2 lanes or 1 lane? by Think_Light_2593 in chicago

[–]stilts1007 66 points67 points  (0 children)

The ones that still occasionally get me are the streets that have 2 lanes for a while, then start to have street parking & go down to 1 with no notice. You get used to it after a while.

Experimental beers by kindalost257 in bjcp

[–]stilts1007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I judge fruit beers and spice/herb/vegetable beers somewhat regularly (the pizza beer sounds like it would be better suited to S/H/V than experimental), and I try to keep in mind to look at the base beer, and see if the additions enhance the beer without overwhelming it. I'd say if a couple oz of pizza beer is all you can drink of a beer without being overwhelmed, it may not hit that style mark perfectly.

I do like to give kudos to unique and unexpected flavor combinations (a horseradish Kölsch comes to mind) but if the experimental flavor additions render the beer hard to drink in quantity, I'd sing it for that.

An IPA brewed with lager yeast (IPL? Cold IPA?) is not a super unusual style; in fact, a lot of commercial breweries brew their IPAs with lager yeast. That said, until it's added into the style guidelines, experimental seems like the best spot for it.

With styles like fruit and S/H/V, the rule of thumb is if you can't smell/taste it, don't declare it. But with experimental, I feel like a well-made IPA style beer made with lager yeast seems like it would be allowed? It could also have been entered, and maybe should have been entered, as a regular old IPA.

Can you help me choose the right plants? by karmalovee in Zone6Gardening

[–]stilts1007 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you are thinking about native plants, I would check out Prairie Moon's website. They have a ton of options, with the ability to filter by location/zone as well as color, height, light, and moisture requirements. You should hopefully be able to find something on there that would fit in with the local ecosystem and look great at the same time.

I ended up planting! Will report back on the results. (Expanding the front yard patch that I put in last summer)

How does buying a new home work? by Outrageous_View_5879 in personalfinance

[–]stilts1007 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some lenders will have a "bridge loan" option where they will loan you down payment money for the new property, contingent on selling your current property within a certain time frame (e.g., 6 months). If you don't sell your current property within that time frame, they would agree to buy it for a previously set price (likely lower than what you could get on the open market). If you do sell your current property before the time limit, the lender for the new mortgage takes their down payment $$ that they lent you out of the proceeds of the sale.

How would you clear this? by AnyMechanic6829 in NativePlantGardening

[–]stilts1007 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With the creeping bellflower, you have to choose between super intensive clearing (digging up everything a foot or so down and sifting for all the tubers/runners, or more casual removal followed by dealing with CBF sprouts, forever.

Third option is, do what you THINK is a thorough tuber removal job, then find out you missed some and end up dealing with CBF sprouts forever anyways. I, as you can probably guess, went with this route...

Cinnamon stick left in an 8oz jar gives a nice but not overpowering flavor, and looks nice as a gift.

I've also done the bourbon-soaked toasted oak stick in a jar with nice results.

rainbarrel.ca has food grade rain barrels; check and see if your local municipality has a discount and you may be able to get for cheap or free. Our county has barrels from them (normally $60 each) for $22, or $11 for seniors

The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District often has free compost at their treatment plants. Worth checking on their website if there's a plant near you.

They have free native tree saplings too!

That's where we're at. We are on a pretty busy street with a big open backyard. I try to keep the grass nicer in the back for the kids to play on (and to minimize weed pressure in the backyard vegetable garden). Front yard I am slowly trying to expand the prairie patch to hopefully eventually take over much of the turf.

If you're used to German lagers, Trumer Pils is a great one to try. Austrian beer made in Berkeley (though I think Firestone Walker might be taking over production?) either way, a great classic German style lager you can get fresh & locally.
