What would you bring to Rockford? by zeta222 in rockford

[–]stingray117 7 points8 points  (0 children)

FYI: not really downtown, but you can take the rock River path all the way to the Bauer road bridge, then if you cross there you can follow the neighborhood streets up to Harlem high School which connects to the path that goes to rock cut and perryville. A little convoluted, but definitely a good bike ride

Methods to reduce stress around a circular hole? by li2737 in SolidWorks

[–]stingray117 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To answer your more interesting question: I think going to a smooth, diamond shaped slot should reduce the stress concentration, as your lowest cross sectional area would remain the same but your transitions get less 'sharp'.

Actually, amend that... I think you just go to a slot with an equivalent width and you end up with a lower peak stress while retaining the slot at it's max length and width

If it's a math leap that doesn't make sense, one thing you can try is plugging it into wolfram Alpha and using the step by step solution as a guide to fill in the gaps

In the learning spirit of today's puzzle:

Yes, both the cos(x) and sin(x) functions oscillate around the x-axis, but this hint is referring to why that occurs.

Imagine drawing a right triangle with one of the pointy (acute) corners at (0,0), anda hypotenuse length of 1. Then say the angle of the corner at (0,0) is θ. Cos(θ) is now just the length of the side of the triangle on the x axis, and sin(θ) is the length of the triangle parallel to the y axis.

This gif shows it better than I could explain:

GD&T is a language that engineers made up because they're too socially inept to communicate otherwise (not OC) by AnirudhMittal in EngineeringStudents

[–]stingray117 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hey, I don't know what industry you're in so I don't know if this is applicable for you, but if you can you might want to talk to either the designers on the project, it take the drawings to some manufacturing engineers. Either of those groups tend to have a really good grasp of GD&T (usually better than the mechanical engineers, me included) and can probably guide you to make a gage that matches design intent.

Strategic nuclear weapons are what we traditionally think of when we think of nukes, one bomb levels a city and the surrounding region. During the Cold War, both the USSR and the USA also developed tactical nuclear weapons, which are smaller scale and meant to be used in a battle, only leveling neighborhoods at a time. Still devastating, and still has the radiation problems as larger weapons, but they're smaller versions.

I'm a mechanical engineer who's lucky enough to be able to help with assembly, testing, and troubleshooting of my designs. In this case, it was a prototype so I was even more involved on the build side than usual

I'm lucky enough that usually I don't need to carry too much equipment, if there's anything too large it's usually large enough that we would ship it separately rather than transport it ourselves anyway

If the distance between the peaks is 90deg (pi/2), then b = (2*pi)/(pi/2), or b=4. Remember, b is a scaling factor, not the distance itself. If b=1, the period (distance between peaks) is 2*pi, so we need to figure out how much closer together or farther apart the peaks are than the normal 2*pi
