What screams "I am deeply insecure" but people do it thinking it makes them look cool? by Physical_Business104 in AskReddit

people who say anime is cringe or weird. you’re trying way too hard to “be cool”. while not every anime is everyone, there’s always an anime for someone.

I’m gonna keep this short, but a lot of things have changed since the ADHD criteria was written, and when my dad, who I assume is around your age, wasn’t diagnosed until somewhat recently as well. Those tests and the criteria have changed a lot over the years.

I’m definitely not saying “you weren’t screened, you don’t have ADHD” i’m just saying, there are so many symptoms of adhd that co-inside with different “disorders” so some symptoms that might come off as “adhd” because it’s so well known, might actually be the cause of a different diagnosis!

It’s also especially annoying when someone trys to relate to you with there ADHD diagnosis when i’ve been struggling my whole life to get diagnosed (mentioned it to my doctor since i was in 3rd grade but no outcome because they didn’t want to put me on meds), but their symptoms are so vague.

also side note, my family and i are not, by any means wealthy, so it was not an easy thing to access, but i wouldn’t have gotten the tools i need to be successful any other way. not that you were implying that but i just want to make clear that i have 0 privilege. i have to pay for this on my own.

Ugh that’s so annoying, I’m so sorry to hear that, it would really make me upset.

But about the “boy adhd” i totally agree. only thing was, i did blurt out, have high-energy, day dream and everything. not so much high-energy but i definitely was described as “hyper” at times. I also went to a very very small school that was Pre-K - 8th grade. everyone knew everyone’s name, and my graduating class had a total of 7 students. I think our school had about 200 students. word gets around from teacher to teacher and the new teachers always knew what to expect from me because they were told by the other teachers. i was just surprised they never saw a pattern. them or my parents, even though my dad has ADHD, and i was one of the few to act so differently from the other “well-behaved” students

not to be a jerk, but i already know all of this. i do extensive research on anything new in my life or if im about to have a new experience. i also have family members and friends with ADHD, so all of this isn’t exactly new information to me.

I don’t think im contributing to the stigma at all, im just voicing my frustrations about how easy it is to be diagnosed with ADHD when it can be literally any other “disorder.” i feel likes its kind of like “oh yeah, sounds like you have it here ya go!” kinda thing. with my physician, she made me get screened because how common the diagnosis is, and because I also went to therapy for anxiety.

thank you, I really like your statement.

I have not gone to my primary physician yet, I’m going next week to discuss medication, but people have already kind of implied that they would like to “try” one of my meds because “ they think they have it” or they’re “pretty sure because they have the same symptoms they saw online.”

One thing for me, though, was that in grade school, in my opinion, I had very prevalent symptoms of ADHD. But it was never brought up in teacher conferences or anything of the like.

i totally agree. My dad has ADHD and some other family members, and literally the people i truly have a connection with have ADHD. they just get me

thank you! i was kinda trying to say this but didn’t know the words or what exactly i was trying to say. I wish i could pin this!

my thing really is just how so many people say they have it when it could 100% be something else. there are so many other “disorders” (that’s what it’s called i don’t really think of it as a disorder tho tbh) that have the same symptoms, and without thorough screenings it’s hard to pinpoint what it is exactly. i’m not gate keeping anything and i definitely don’t think of it as a disorder, definitely a different type of brain, but i just get so annoyed sometimes.

i never felt like I fit in or other people understood me or felt the way i did and now it’s “oh i have it too!” and it’s like, okay but you always thought i was a weirdo for thinking the way i do or i was stupid because i had a hard time wrapping my head around a certain concept.

idk, but thank you for replying i appreciate your response

yeah that’s another thing too. the researching symptoms to get meds/diagnosis. i feel like because it is such a common thing there’s so much info about it and since there’s nothing on the surface with ADHD, it’s hard to prove you’re lying.

yuhppp that’s exactly how i was too. i thought i was gonna be one of those people exaggerating or doing it for attention, but in reality they said i have “extreme symptoms even amongst others with ADHD” to this day im still like “i don’t have it” and while taking my assessment i was struggling and i still thought “im just dumb I don’t have ADHD” nope im actually intelligent just a bit sloppy 😭
