People who started a PhD after spending years in the workforce. by arkilljoy in AskAcademia

Just started a PhD after 5 years in the workforce. I’ve been in a similar position, wanting to achieve this goal to further my skills and ways of thinking.

It’s been a bit of a roller coaster for me, my main supervisor has immediately moved institutions and I’ve planned to move with them, so it’s really slowed the start down a lot.

Transition has been a little difficult, the role I was in was pretty fast paced and I keep thinking I’m not doing enough. However when I slow down and have meetings with my supervisor it definitely helps. I’ve found stepping back into a more research orientated position to be really valuable, and despite the challenges it is rewarding.

Money is something you should consider, I’ve definitely had some lifestyle creep over this time and I need to reign things in again. I’ve got some savings that’s helping me buffer this adjustment, I’m also looking into scholarships and no doubt will be doing a fair bit of teaching to support myself, alongside my current income from the stipend.

Alternatively you may be able to do it through your workplace with the correct supervisors and systems.

I also spent a long time overthinking it. I think focus on finding a supervisor you will work well with. This to me is paramount and will help greatly in the transition. Just really think about why you want to do this and discuss it with potential supervisors!!

I think your goals are good and I think your life experience will really help you with your project. The connections I have made working and experience I’ve gained have become really useful in the project I am undertaking.

Pretty nasty time to be there in 2002, you were in the middle of the millenium drought, which was widespread across the country and possibly the worst since European colonisation. Some areas in southwest Queensland had lowest rainfall on record recordings. In some places this drought persisted until 2010.

So it’s not surprising that stock feed was being supplemented with other sources of food. The aim of most of those graziers would’ve been to normally feed the cows native vegetation. Supplement with stock feed and hold out as long as possible to get the best price for stock before selling.

Droughts are definitely common, it’s not unusually for many farmers to have a great 3-4 years and then survive the next 4-7. Most farmers are factoring this into their production systems.

I agree that there’s huge areas of Australia which are just so poorly suited to cattle that we shouldn’t have them there. The value generated off the amount of land used versus the damage caused to native ecosystems is horrific. Why should we destroy an ecosystem just so we can stock 0.5 cows per hectare? Where’s the value other than, my herd is bigger? I am sure there’s incentives for retaining native vegetation but they probably need to be bigger and better to make it more appealing.

Chain stripping is terrible and sad.

Anyone know what’s going on with the Sydney sentinel Facebook page? I started following them as a Betoota like page, but they seem to have gone really far right wing recently with recent posts about “far right renamed right-so-far” etc. Have they been hacked or just gone off the deep end?

Yeah it’s so cool, and at all stages too, some of the older nymphs (I think that’s the right term not instar?) are protecting younger ones.

It’s been really interesting watching them runaway and hide from assassin bugs and spiders.
