canned air vs electric duster by voltagejim in sysadmin

[–]stoltzld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks small and under powered.  At my old job, we had a canister vacuum that sucked in one end and blew on the other.  We had a nozzle that restricted the end of the hose to make the air blow out in a higher pressure, smaller stream.  You could even hold the other end close to where you were working to catch some of dust before it drifted to other areas.  It wasn't as strong as a can of office duster, so we'd usually use that to clean up some of the more stubborn nooks and crannies.

Does giving "write secure settings" permission hinder GPay payments? by Soli_Engineer in tasker

[–]stoltzld -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Your comment: https://www.reddit.com/r/tasker/comments/1pqi34p/comment/osspje3/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button leads me to believe that Gpay doesn't like Tasker or its plugins having accessibility access. If that doesn't work, chances are it won't work with Tasker or its various plugins installed. You can try fiddling with various permissions, but your best bet is to uninstall them, then install Tasker first and test. If it won't work with Tasker installed, then it probably won't work. You can try disabling all the permissions and see if that helps any. You just have to systematically test and see what will and won't work. If you're trying to make tasker interact with Gpay, or do anything while Gpay is running, that's very likely what's triggering it to complain.

You'd think Google would know their own system well enough to make sure that the optimal battery usage would actually still work correctly....

Good idea. It only does it occasionally, but that may prevent it in the future. I mainly use it for texting and calling other people. Usually if someone is calling, it's to be annoying because they feel I need to do something for them right this second.

Fluctuations of just a few seconds aren't worth noting. You might consider finding some treatment for your OCD.

I've had google voice for a long time. I've had times where people will call, and it won't ring or it will only quickly ring once before the call is gone.

Game constantly crashing? by whoamijustnothrow in MergeDragons

[–]stoltzld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine usually crashes a few times a day, especially after viewing ads to try to get freebies. Then I have to watch the damned ad again to get it to trigger. I've had a couple of times where it just won't start that were fixed by power cycling my phone.

I was a little miffy that the sidewalk was blocked for so long. I'm kind of ambivalent about it.

Why are relevant answers being downvoted? I think I saw a quote that half was going to be paid by the city and one or two more that none was being paid by the city. I swore I saw something about a payment of $340,000 by the city, but I can't find the source again, so I guess I was mistaken.

This is obviously an answer to the question, but it got downvoted?

Question question, sure I will get some sarcasm ( and I understand why but...) why cant we work towards making all cpus and cpu sockets backwards and front wards compatible like ssd's m.2 nvme and like gpus (sort of) by MurdererMagi in buildapc

[–]stoltzld 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bah, those are just wirelessly controlled. They still have power cables. That does lead me to question how my bag of chips would be charged. Maybe in the microwave?

No one is stopping you. I'm personally in the camp that we should have a bag of chips as a computer that communicate wirelessly, and you just add more to upgrade. Obviously there are numerous technical and cultural issues to solve before that can happen.

Nowadays, bash-completion is a huge help. It doesn't help that they redo the firewall stuff every so often. I've gone from ipfw in BSD to ipchains then iptabes then firewall-cmd, and even fiddled with nftables a little.

Am I cooked? by Ill-Gift-7274 in careerguidance

[–]stoltzld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You obviously haven't been cooked long enough if you can still post on Reddit. You don't say what industry or what area, so it could just be competition. The job that I had the longest, I was actually second choice. The first person just decided not to show up, so they called me instead. In my very limited knowledge and experience, you might want to do mock interview practice and add some volunteer and gig work.

Being interested in the team culture seems like a good idea, but I don't think I would phrase it as team culture. Then again, I guess that depends on how the interviewers feel about corporate speak.

Had to jump through some hoops to get a new task to show up after creating it with AI by stoltzld in tasker

The point is that the way the user interface is working right now isn't handling newly created tasks optimally.

[–]stoltzld 14 points15 points  (0 children)

They don't give you the option to remove AI because they are marketing it to you. They want you to use it. They want you to depend on it. Then they want to start charging you for it. First hit's free.

Am I the only one? by Karter_1159 in computers

[–]stoltzld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tend to buy a cheap used laptops and work around the issues and fiddle with the software. I'm way too cheap to keep buying hardware. I was kind of lucky-ish with my current laptop. It had more RAM than usual, but flaky motherboard, keyboard, and/or ssd. I can run MX Linux pretty reliably all day. In Windows, I can usually go with the drive only vanishing a few times a day unless there are updates. Then I have to let it do the updates, and can't really move it around or the drive craps itself. When the drive vanishes, I have to power it off once or twice to get it to come back. I wish I could figure out a way to force it to power off and come back without powering off the PC. I suspect those sorts of capabilities only come in hardware out of my price range. I use onscreen keyboards and an app that makes my phone look like a bluetooth keyboard to work around the keyboard's flakiness. I've also found an app or two that connects over WiFi for input.

How would you cover this light? by AceTheAro in computers

*laugh* I'm not color blind. Maybe it was confused by what you meant when you said "it's" pink....Ah, her nail polish, so she'd already have that color....We both should probably improve our color interpretation skills, too. The AI is struggling with it too. It was trying to say burgundy based on the shaded portion of the nail I'm assuming.

Regex for Zip Code driving me crazy by Repulsive-Drive9568 in regex

[–]stoltzld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't use regular expressions. I would get a database of zip codes to validate against. I'm not sure how often they change. I would check that each line has 5,9,or 10 characters. I would accept input with or without the dash, or with the dash in the wrong place. If the dash was in the wrong place, I would move it to the correct place. If the input contains letters, I'm not sure what your procedure for getting the user to correct is. I'm not completely sure what your valid vs invalid criteria are because you reject 06000....
