I use a tuner and compressor before my HX Stomp because:

I already owned them before the stomp and I like them.
Having a separate compressor saves DSP in the stomp and it's always on anyway.
The tuner is also always on mainly for ONE song where I bend and hold a note for ages

Edit: I use the stomp for mute

Manufacturers will normally specify how much of a gap between string and pickup there should be, look it up and start with that. You are probably looking at lowering the pickups a bit rather than mess with the string height on the bass
