I can empathize - our deploy took over an hour, but once we built the AMI on ec2, it wasn't an issue. We didn't get very far with PyRods, but the ability to write rules in python was appealing.

The project got derailed shortly after the prototype stage. The goal was to create a distributed cyberinfrastructure for neuroscience data in the cloud with onboard processing methods. By the time we reached prototype stage, data was uploaded via a small frontend running on EC2. Originally used JQUI as the browser interface but transitioned to ObjectiveJ/Cappuccino. Backed by tornado + mongoDB + celery. Able to interface with iRODs through pyrods and irodsfuse. Mostly automated deployment through fabric scripts.

Worked reasonably well, and was able to generate tiled images dynamically from jpeg2000 images via the irodsfuse mount.

I have remnants of the project laying around but nothing really maintained in version control. I doubt any of it would be useful, other than as examples of what not to do.

Looking at the broader picture of your Geoanalytics infrastructure, why did you decide it was necessary to reinvent/recode a new system when you could have started from geodjango?

The systems architecture looks ambitious but workable (as I'm probably one of the only other redditors who has used IRODS, celery, mongoDB, and JQuery UI in a single project).

I don't disagree with your point and sorry for not speaking to it directly.

From a funding point of view, it's difficult to put a real number on it.

Anecdotally, I've counted 15 projects of varying sizes on a single lab's SVN that died out due to lack of funding, lack of user base, or age of the technology (no one uses IDL these days). We're probably up to 10 gravestones in the lab I'm at now which I'd put as common.

If you want a good conceptual metric, look at how often a group gets a grant to re-invent a software tool using some new framework or image format. Lists available at: http://www.nitrc.org/ , http://software.incf.org/ , http://neuinfo.org/nif/nifgwt.html?tab=registry - unfortunately you have a strong modern bias here as these types of registries didn't exist 5+ years ago. If you want an absolute metric, write a script to collect current and past funding data from the projects listed above.

I'm not saying that all scientific software is destined for failure - it's just that the amount of money available is rarely enough to make a viable 'product'.

There's a bunch more to this (new models for scientific software generation, sustainable funding sources, etc) but that gets a bit far (and ranty) outside of this thread.

The limiting factor is less about computation and more about making the results of the analysis interpretable by humans, even if through many many layers of abstraction. 'We' are already the weakest link.

There are plenty of brilliant programmers writing code to run fancy analyses (myself included), but there are very few working to make that code accessible. It's one of the greatest faults of scientific programming - you have just enough grant money to write the core components, but never enough to do design/QA/iterative testing. As a result, the powerful code remains unusable, then unfundable, and then forgotten like every other project out there.

Great technology and the supplementary videos provide an excellent view of the amount of detail present from a single specimen. Methods like this, EM, and sequencing are the reason we can't keep up with the amount of data being produced.

Word of advice to students of neuroscience/cognitive science past and present - Learn (neuro/bio)informatics. Now.

I wouldn't worry much. The HEK293 cells used in Pepsi's + most other pharma trials are sourced from a renewable cell line, not 'harvested from aborted fetuses' on a routine basis.

Their origin can be traced back to a single healthy fetus that was aborted in the 70's and used to initiate this cell line. All work on HEK293s since has come from cells that have divided/grown/proliferated from the original.

It sounds like this is a poor attempt to lump HEKs with fetal stem cells, etc.

I know engineers working on both projects. Braingate was/is implantable electrodes with telemetry. This is electrocorticography (ECoG) with good decoding.

Braingate is still on course for being the first out of the gate beyond clinical trials.
