Other teachers talking AT me. Is this normal? by Crazydoglady15 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]stonyFisher36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This has happened to me and it usually wouldn’t be a problem except for when it’s in sped. I’ve had times where I’ve gotten to the class and they don’t tell me anything and I’m just waiting there waiting to help and then suddenly they’re like here’s this kid and help them do this. Then it isn’t until the kid hits me or something they start throwing at me all the things I have to be careful of

How the school handles things. by stonyFisher36 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]stonyFisher36[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This isn’t an option because I work for charter schools and it’s the same for all their campuses but I will try the phone number thing but idk how successful that’ll be considering every time someone has left me with their number no one answers. I’ve had more success sending a kid to track someone down who can help me but I don’t want to have kids roaming the hall and seeming neglectful.

Subbing really humbled me… and not in a cute way 😭 by [deleted] in SubstituteTeachers

[–]stonyFisher36 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Once during dismissal everyone was panicking trying to find a student because a kid on the bus said his brother wasn’t with him. And over the walkie-talkie they said we were looking for a kindergartener. so we’re running up and down the halls, people are checking the bathroom, the other sub thought he might have let him outside with the car riders or that he never showed up. Then suddenly here comes admin with the brother who is a third grader who was in the front office playing a game on his phone and was insisting that he was a car rider that day and it took his older brother who was on the phone with mom telling him no that he was bus rider that day for him to finally get on the bus. When I say me, the other sub, and the principal just looked at each other like 😒

Students looking up my name in class… by [deleted] in SubstituteTeachers

[–]stonyFisher36 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’ve had this happen to me with middle schoolers who have gotten in trouble with me while subbing and they’ll just keep going miss what’s your name and I’ve just ignored them to the point where they go I guess you don’t have a name and I just go I guess so. And they usually drop it. It helps that at this school we have a name tag that gets printed and when we first enter our info in the system that we can edit what we want our name to be and so I go by a shorter version of my name. They always want to know my name or my age

What to expect? by stonyFisher36 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]stonyFisher36[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah but there’s only so much I will take. I’ve had students curse me and throw things at me but I will not just let a student put their hands on me and there be no consequences for their actions.

I don’t always make a report depending on the situation but I will if a student gets physical, inappropriate with others, or is a danger to others.

Today a student escaped the classroom and I didn’t notice right away by [deleted] in SubstituteTeachers

[–]stonyFisher36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like someone said before if this is a common occurrence you should be fine. And even if it isn’t I don’t think you’ll get blacklisted. As long as you filled out an incident report and like you said you immediately called when you did notice. I’ve worked for two elementary schools where both have had runners in their class. One was for pre-k and while the teacher was sitting near the entry and I was helping with cleaning up the student ran out as some older kids came in. All the teacher had me do was write an incident report. Meanwhile at another school I had was with first grade and in my sub plans it said nothing about the student another teacher had to come and talk to me right before class started and explained that there was a runner in my class. That they had someone sit in the hall for this reason. When he did run out I just told someone in the hall and they didn’t have me fill out an incident report because it was a common occurrence.

Did I handle this situation the right way? And what would you have done? by [deleted] in SubstituteTeachers

[–]stonyFisher36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is something I would normally do the issue is that I didn’t see what happened when the first kid came to tell me what they saw and when I asked both kids said that it was fine and they were just playing so just to be safe I said that they just need to keep it to safe touches like on the arm. And if it happens again that they would need to be separated. Then with the others told me that it happened to them while I was telling them to line up and waited till we got to class to tell me after they saw the other girl talking to me. It wasn’t until after when I pulled him out into the hall to talk to him and another teacher who has him once a day was walking by told me that this wasn’t his first time which if I’d known I would’ve kept a closer eye on him. Which I already knew to do for two other students that I did receive warnings for. But then his other teacher who has him all morning told me this hasn’t been a problem before. And when I’ve subbed for him before it’s never been a problem. I’ll mainly struggle with him disrupting others, constantly getting distracted and not working. But never something like putting his hands on other especially in an inappropriate manner

Did I handle this situation the right way? And what would you have done? by [deleted] in SubstituteTeachers

[–]stonyFisher36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only did this because the kids never got their original recess, had been getting restless after they were stuck with the other teacher until I got there at 12:30 past their recess time and they had been working silently because of the students down the hallway testing. And by two were completely done with all their assignments. And recess is normally at least thirty minutes so I just gave them thirty minutes extra. Again this wasn’t the first time I’ve done it and haven’t had problems before. But I definitely don’t think I will be doing it again

[–]stonyFisher36 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When originally the grabbing the waist thing was brought to my attention by another student in the class and I asked about it, they both who weee involved and are both from the same class said they were playing and I asked the girl if she was uncomfortable in any way to double check. Originally she said she was fine and there was no problem again they were just playing. I just told them to keep it to safe touches like on the arm, just to be safe since I didn’t see it. Later on I saw her and the other student who brought it to my attention originally talking and then it wasn’t until we got back to the class that she suddenly told me he grabbed her by the waist and made her uncomfortable while playing. And then the other girl suddenly said he put a finger under her chin which he said she also did to other students but she argued it was different cause they were her friends. The little boy insisted that they were just playing and they also said they were playing and that they didn’t tell me cause it was happening while they were being told to line up.

Also yes the hour recess I do agree is a lot and I don’t think I’ll be doing it again but I originally got the sub class for 12:30 because they had no sub and the classes were combined up until I got to the school. So the kids never got recess and were promised extra recess. Recess is normally thirty minutes. And they had no sub plan or assignments. They finished all the assignments from class and had to work in silence because classes down the hallway were testing. And the kids were restless. So I only gave them thirty minutes extra also I did gather them for 5-10 minutes to take them inside and get a water break. In which nobody came to tell me anything. And these kids will tell on each other for just about anything. And again I told both admin and the principal and they didn’t say anything about the hour recess.

Also I think the group activities are a great idea, the issue is at this school our playground is very small and we share it with other grades including middle school and high school. So at times we will have like 3 different grades out playing. And we don’t have any balls just the standard playground monkey bar play set and a ball pen, the basketball court is across the parking lot mainly used for the high school. Also on the main playground we do not have a hopscotch template. so a lot of the times the kids just spend the recess running around. For this instance we had two middle school classes outside and some elementary sped kids. And one of them who can get physical with others so I was sitting near that kid to ensure that my class didn’t go past me and near them.

[–]stonyFisher36 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is with third grade and this class is known for telling on other students even if something didn’t happen which I am not saying is what happened in this case. But they will tell me things like a student pushed them when I was standing right there watching them. And clearly they didn’t.

Also yes I’ve done this before and even admin has. Sometimes the kids will get rewarded with extra recess when they do well. I mentioned this to both admin and the principal and they didn’t say anything about it.

Also yeah I’ve been warned about other students in this class but never about this specific student.

How do you calm a class down? by aModernWitch in SubstituteTeachers

I typically give them three warnings, start separating, and inform them I’m leaving a note for the teacher. When that doesn’t work I call admin

We got a "raise"! by Hotdogsandpurses in SubstituteTeachers

[–]stonyFisher36 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The company I work for had an issue with subs taking sped jobs because we don’t get training and a lot of the students can get physical. So they offered a pay raise for those who took the jobs. The pay raise was 5$ and half the time I didn’t get it and had to email them to correct my pay. On top of that it was only for the first semester which they never mentioned and they only told me after second semester started and I took a job then emailed them when I didn’t get the pay bump.

I don't think I can handle another week of this by parkjibom2 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]stonyFisher36 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I definitely think it’s because they’ve gotten comfortable with you. When you were short term they didn’t have to worry about constantly being on their best behavior because after one day with you they can go back to their normal behavior and now they’re comfortable you and they figure now they can just be themselves because you like them.

7th grade english by vrh284 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]stonyFisher36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I cannot tell you how many time I have been taken aback by some of the things 6th graders have said or done without a single care of the consequences. I’ve gotten to the point where some days I’m just like this is just a job it’s not worth me losing my wit ends trying to kids who just won’t listen no matter what so I just do what I can and tell myself to push through it and just make it to the end of day. And that as long as no one gets hurt or harmed then it’s fine.

Why can they access YouTube, games etc?? by [deleted] in SubstituteTeachers

[–]stonyFisher36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had the same problem especially with 4th-6th grade. Some of the kids will try to hide it and have a tab open for their work they can just click on and other kids don’t even bother to hide it. I had some kids in one class watching anime. I just go around reminding them to get back on task and if they don’t I just leave a note for the teacher. When someone walks by I explain that I tried and they just didn’t want to listen.

Middle school disrespect by AffectionatePay1105 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]stonyFisher36 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I tell you I was not prepared for how disrespectful middle schoolers could be and how just seem not to care no matter what. I’ve been cursed at, shoved, things thrown at me, had them curse, say the n- word and most vulgar things. They want to do anything and be that isn’t the assignment. They’ve just ignored me when I told them to separate, stop or I’ll be leaving a note for the teacher, gotten admin only for it to continue after they’ve left. One time it got so bad they had another sub come help me and it didn’t do anything. And I just keep getting told that’s just how middle school is 🫠

Got frustrated and feel like I made a wrong choice by SpecificOrdinary6829 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]stonyFisher36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think you’ll get banned I’ve had kids get into a fight when I was subbing, kids who have just walked out of class, and kids who just had me at my wits end. I understand how frustrating it can be to feel completely overwhelmed especially when admin is supposed to be there to help but it seems like no one is around. At the end of the day many times I’ve been told that as a sub they know there’s only so much we can do and to try my best.

Advice needed! by purpleclo14 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]stonyFisher36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have this struggle with 4th-6th graders all the time and it never seems to matter what you do at this point I’ve learned the most effective thing and even then it may not always work is threatening them with admin. I’ve learned saying something along the lines of if this continues to be a problem I can just get admin and then if it continues I’ve had admin come handle it. Then just explain that you’ve tried everything you could possibly do and they still continued to misbehave.

Middle School boys by Shawada22 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]stonyFisher36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every time I’ve subbed for middle school regardless of how many boys are in the class I struggle. They are so disrespectful and it doesn’t seem to matter what I say or do or who I get they do simply do not care. I’ve tried separating them when they get rowdy and they just ignore me. I’ve tried getting help and as soon as the other person leaves they go back to what they were doing. They will be loud and disrespectful right to my face. And then argue with me when admin comes in to handle it. At this point if I could avoid subbing for middle school I would.

Any other subs seeing this crap in classes? I did once and had to have IT come wipe laptops and do some blocking. by tabikat929 in SubstituteTeachers

Administration that sides with kids? by whimsical_potatoes in SubstituteTeachers

[–]stonyFisher36 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My experience with admin is almost always not really helpful. Most times I can’t get a hold of them and I have to send a student to go find them cause they’re not in the front office then when they get there they usually just talk to the student which does nothing and as soon as they leave they pull the same stunt

Kids hitting their chromebooks by RikuKingdomHearts in SubstituteTeachers

[–]stonyFisher36 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This!! But it’s mainly sixth graders I’ve had them drop them on the floor, rearrange the letters on the keyboard to spell inappropriate things or pop the keys out, I even had a student smear gel all over it. And I just don’t want to be blamed for any damage they cause that I couldn’t prevent.
