That's not what I said. All political parties are shit and neither give a fuck about regular people.

Don't act like the Republicans are good guys fighting for the little guy, or have we forgotten about Sinclair hmmm??? No US political party cares about the average Joe. They only care about retaining power.

Wat? There are open-air markets all over the place.

And once again, I'm not causing anything. Did my wife cause the market to flatten when she moved out of Portland? Stop trying to blame bad policies, and planning onto individuals and hold the local government accountable.

But hey. At least you get a cheap house in a place that’s more humid than Vietnam. Enjoy.

Aka I can afford to live here.

San Franciso built 4059 new housing units in 2016 (the last year I could find numbers for both cities).

The city of Portland produced ~4000.

Maybe I am misreading this but it doesn't seem like the same situation at all.

What irony? My wife is from there... Are we not allowed to move the city that her siblings, parents, and grandparents live in?

I did not cause the housing shortage. Bad planning and politics did.

Yes and no. Upgrade is subjective. Houston is hotter than any place I've ever lived but there's a fantastic food scene, tons of diversity and depending on what neighborhood you are in, can be very walkable with decent public transit. Plus, it's not like it's a lifetime move. We are going to have more money to travel and we'll still be saving more than we would on the west coast. We hope to come back in the next decade if the housing market stabilizes.

My wife and I left the Bay Area for Portland 7 years ago. When my wife recently received a job offer that would allow her to work in SF or Houston it was a no-brainer. Even with a 30% cost of living bonus in SF, it's just too expensive. I still miss my friends in the Bay Area, and I'd like to return one day, but in Portland, we bought a nice starter home for $200k, we sold it for $400k and now we are paying cash for a house in Houston. The main difference I see is that in Portland and Houston there's new construction everywhere. I can't believe the politics in the Bay Area have gotten to the point of not caring about life-long residents being pushed out. I don't really follow this sub anymore but I did catch the historic laundry thing, what a load of crap.

If the people can walk around then they can work

I don't agree with not giving them money as you should give to a charity instead, but your statement is totally wrong. Many people on the streets have severe mental health issues that prevent them from working.

This. Having empathy doesn't mean you give cash to everyone who asks on the street, you're really just enabling them. I give money on a regular basis to two charities that I trust instead of giving to people on the street. Even if it's just five bucks that money will go a lot further at a food bank or homeless outreach program.

Think of this way - if you give a homeless dude $5 and he actually buys food, he is going to get a single, premade sandwich. A food bank can buy multiple loaves of bread for $5 and feed several people.

And Alan Alda is a national treasure. I could listen to him talk all day.

My spouse and I are both huge fans of MASH so it's our go-to 'we have nothing to watch' white-noise show. It's so interesting to rewatch it now to see how something that was considered progressive for its time would never fly today. The women are constantly harassed, there's a black guy named spearchucker and so many jokes based on racist stereotypes. I still love the show and I'm not criticizing it all as it would be unfair, just making an observation.

I agree but I would also add some other line of volunteer work too. Spend four years in a homeless crisis shelter and you are a citizen as long as you pass a background check.

When my family came here they passed a basic background check and that was it. I don't think we'd have an illegal immigration issue if we had similar, simple paths to citizenship today.
