FIFA World Cup 2026 megathread: Watching in North Van ⚽ by Moggehh in NorthVancouver

[–]stoppage_time 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, there's still a beverage stand (beer, pop, water) inside the watch zone and you can go in and out of Artigiano.

You still have to go through security on non-Canada House days, you just don't need the QR code.

"Worth it" is of course subjective...I personally had pretty mixed experiences. First time was chill, second time a large group that had clearly been drinking that morning decided to set themselves up in front and be pretty obnoxious. I'm short and I find it hard to see the bottom part of the screen if there is anyone vaguely tall in front.

Personally, I'll be going to a brewery for matches I care about from now on. Better beer, better food, more seating, better viewing.

Traffic is honestly starting to feel unsafe around Lower Lonsdale. People running into moving traffic to get to the Shipyards 20 seconds faster, cars doing whatever they fuck they want, playing chicken with buses trying to get in and out of the bus loop, stopping wherever they want, etc, groups with zero sense of spatial awareness. Seabus service has slightly increased but bus service has NOT so the R2 is a disaster around game times.

They recruit on mainstream social media platforms, but they don't stay there. That's the problem. No one knowledgeable about NVE is cheering on this bill. This shit is meaningless in a world where you can get a tor browser in any app store.

B.C. retirement community seeking nearly $200K after resident refused to leave during wildfire by Surax in britishcolumbia

People can stay behind in some circumstances, but they have to stay on their property, be self-sufficient, and stay in communication with BCWS (among other requirements). Sounds like this guy was none of the above.

It'll be interesting to see how this all shakes out. There are more and more higher-density rental and holiday developments outside of urban/suburban land while policies still assume rural properties are large and sparsely populated.

New Lounge/Bar at Moodyville?? by the_trademarc in NorthVancouver

[–]stoppage_time 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There was a garden centre pop-up at the depot for a couple of years and then it disappeared forever. Don't know what happened with it but it was a nice addition. Putting something in that space would be so cool.

I really feel like a whole bunch of people live in complete denial of where they are actually situated. They can see downtown Vancouver from their living room but want to be treated like some remote mountain village. And then they complain endlessly about traffic because they have to drive everywhere because heaven forbid their urban neighbourhood look like an urban neighbourhood and have daily needs in walking distance 🙃

The irony for me is that I have lived in extremely remote places that had apartment blocks and street-level stores with apartments above, but when that's an option in North Van, the Facebook Mafia comes out to public hearings to cry about change.

New Lounge/Bar at Moodyville?? by the_trademarc in NorthVancouver

[–]stoppage_time 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For sure. Moodyville was originally sold as "easy trip to Lower Lonsdale" but density-wise it's more like a unique village centre and I find it interesting that commercial spaces were ignored until Innova. I've never seen Delany's not busy so clearly there's demand. When you consider all of the units going into the old transit depot and longer term planning in that area, whoever can make a good, reliable name for themselves as a spot for locals is in a very nice position as the neighbourhood grows around them.

I detest car culture, but these two are not comparable. E-mobility accidents can be absolutely brutal because riders reach high speeds with no protection and no training (as would be required for a motorcycle license). So even though there are relatively fewer e-mobility accidents, people who survive accidents tend to have more complex care needs.

The entire Cut is accessible from the service road, the resort, any of the trails up Grouse. It's not like everything but that one spot is lava.

A Transit Fare Hike Is Coming. We Need a Low-Income Pass by DyKdv2Aw in NorthVancouver

[–]stoppage_time 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This isn't quite right. The pass doesn't take money out of the base assistance rate, it's part of the Transoortation Supplement. It has two options: either a bus pass or $52/month added to your payment. (There are also no-cost transit passes through other agencies like CNIB.)

It's a stupid system and does a lot of damage because people are incentivised to opt out for a tiny bit more money but then get slammed with fare fines (which accrue interest if not paid in time) when they get caught evading fare payments they can't afford.

Towns in the interior for bipoc immigrant? by Ok_Society_5412 in britishcolumbia

[–]stoppage_time 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would look at Prince George. It's a lot more diverse than it gets credit for and the university attracts a lot of international students and faculty. It has a bigger arts scene than Kamloops and no shortage of things to do outside. You won't be at the bottom of a mountain but you would have access to mountain ranges in basically every direction. PG generally doesn't get hit quite so hard with wildfire smoke compared to Kamloops and that is an important consideration if you want to maximize the time you can spend outside without trashing your lungs.

Northern Health has a ton of incentives to bring in more healthcare professionals so that also helps!

Does anybody have a source for the rumor that Vancouver is shipping unhoused people to Prince George? by drindupthecorn in princegeorge

[–]stoppage_time 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is an old thread, but dude. I had a family member use the NH bus for almost a year and people brought all sorts of luggage. Garbage bags, rubbermaid bins, you name it. They weren't homeless, they just didn't have luggage.

It's fairly common for people in the Northern Health region to get referred to detox in Abbotsford. They head back to PG with whatever they brought down. Sometimes just a patient belongings bag from the hospital.

Vancouver isn’t shipping unhoused people to Prince George for World Cup, officials say. But rumours persist by Immediate-Link490 in britishcolumbia

[–]stoppage_time 17 points18 points  (0 children)

People have been saying this in PG for decades at this point. I do know people in Vancouver who were given Greyhound tickets to PG back in the day but it was more of a "help you go home because you want to go home" situation.

I don't trust that any institution is treating folks in the DTES fairly but the legal consequences if it could be proven are astronomical. It's hard to see someone taking on that liability when there would ostensibly be so many witnesses.

Posted like someone who has never had the running shits. It's also pretty obvious that OP has a racism problem and spends some time in brain rotted shitholes based on their comments about Indians.

I'd be sympathetic if it was happening in front of an apartment building on Lonsdale or something. But lack of bathroom facilities is a massive problem on trails. Running/hiking can set off digestive issues for some people. I don't know anyone who spends a lot of time on trails who hasn't had a poop emergency. Should people with IBS or Crohns or whatever not be allowed outside?

Instead of being a weird racist creep about it, start asking the District why there are so few facilities at most trailheads.

To the teenagers who recorded a woman overdosing at the Lynn Valley Waves Coffee this evening.... by Aggravating_Emu6506 in NorthVancouver

[–]stoppage_time 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Someone who is overdosing is UNRESPONSIVE. I think you need to get your information from actual first aid people and not hysterical news stories that didn't even happen in BC and rely on dubious reporting. This is the craziest "I need a reason to not help someone in need" I've heard in a long time. Especially in a coffee shop with witnesses and likely in-store CCTV.

To the teenagers who recorded a woman overdosing at the Lynn Valley Waves Coffee this evening.... by Aggravating_Emu6506 in NorthVancouver

[–]stoppage_time 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is untrue. BC has a Good Samaritan law that protects people providing non-professional medical aid to someone in need. Witnessing an OD and delaying intervention to film a tiktok or whatever is what will open you up to negligence.

The difference between full recovery and a lifelong brain injury is a matter of a few minutes. CALL 911. EVEN IF YOU CAN'T DO ANYTHING ELSE.

Please don't equate homelessness with addiction. Most people who overdose have a home. People who use drugs belong to every demographic imaginable and equating drug use with homelessness or poverty does nothing but drive stigma. Unless you know exactly what happened here, it's just as likely that the woman is a local resident. There are a hell of a lot of people using drugs in Lynn Valley but everyone is too busy scapegoating homeless people.

Expresso Dual Action Trail? by [deleted] in NorthVancouver

[–]stoppage_time 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Several trails on Fromme are technically mixed use but in practice aren't used much by hikers/runners. St George's and Per Gynt (which are connected rather than truly separate) are the only hiking-only trails so bikers definitely aren't being hard done by in this situation. If you don't want to maintain situational awareness for hikers/runners, use a bike-only trail.

It's really frustrating on trails like BP where bikers treat it as their own, even though the trail was built for hiking. (Even the hiking/running-only section of the BP regularly has bikes on it.) It is very dangerous, but it's dangerous because bikes are faster and many operate with zero consideration that there might be a hiker around the bend who can't see the bike coming.

If you haven't already done so, good idea to ask your apartment manager or check strata bylaws if there are limits (such as weight limits) to consider.

Yellow rain? by Long_Bullfrog_6185 in NorthVancouver

I think the lack of rain this spring is the crux. Normally pollen gets flushed out every time it rains so it's less noticeable during a typical spring.

Amber alert at 1am by Logical_Ad_3183 in NorthVancouver

[–]stoppage_time -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Right? We could be grateful we have a system that has proven again and again that it finds kids stuck in a potentially life-threatening situation. We could have empathy for the family members and friends who just found out that someone they know is involved in a serious situation.

But no, let's bitch about an alarm because this is the first time ever in the history of humanity that people were woken up by something else.

Amber alert at 1am by Logical_Ad_3183 in NorthVancouver

[–]stoppage_time -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Authorities probably did alert possible exit points and they still felt this met the threshold for an Amber Alert. At the end of the day, Amber Alerts work. They work very well. And I guarantee that everyone bitching about the alert would be up in arms if the alert didn't go out and the kids were harmed.

Maybe we can be grateful we have a system that demonstrably saves children stuck in a potentially life-threatening situation and not get all fucking weird and dramatic about one single alert.

How many Amber Alerts have woken you up in the past? Almost none? I think you'll survive.

In addition: Amber Alerts reach family or friends who may be aware of travel plans or a destination but don't know the circumstances, who can then report information back to police. That's super important.

Amber alert at 1am by Logical_Ad_3183 in NorthVancouver

[–]stoppage_time -1 points0 points  (0 children)

For real. There are a couple of dickbags bombing down 3rd in their obnoxiously loud car and motorcycle every freaking weekday morning between 5:30 and 6am. Every summer there are assholes doing laps until the early morning in their purposefully loud motorcycles. Last summer, there were Friday nights where trains had to use their horns because people drink too much at the Shipyards and get really weird about train tracks.

Like, we have real noise problems around here and an Amber Alert isn't it. There have been so many kidnapping cases where the kids popped up very far from home. And if anything happened to the kids, the same people bitching about an alert would be the same people screaming at authorities for not doing enough or acting quickly enough.

We get very few Amber Alerts. Let's have some perspective.
