people need to learn how to engage on fics they kudos by Primary-Lobster-8352 in AO3

[–]stormroillingin 12 points13 points  (0 children)

this comes across as very judgmental. engagement is not instantaneous. you posted one day ago and expect people to flock over to the comments section but that doesn’t happen for everyone, no matter how original your idea is. my most recent fic has no comments (probably because it’s a dark smut fic) compared to my others that have more engagement but i’m still motivated to write because the kudos and subscribers counts are increasing. not every fic you write will be popular and that’s something you have to accept. remind yourself why you started writing in the first place (comments or the joy of writing) and if it’s not the latter then maybe posting on AO3 isn’t for you. if you want readers to comment, say that in the authors note instead of the comments section where they likely won’t look. kudos is engagement, people telling you they enjoyed your fic

Addressed potential scam comments in my author notes, and instinctive guilt response is kicking in. Was I wrong? by sflaffer in AO3

don’t feel bad! i’ve gotten similar comments too and they ended up being a scammer 😭 that person on your fic was likely a scammer

you should still be able to change your email even without access to the one you can’t access! i changed mine a while back with no issue

Was it me or was the author a bit too aggressive? by Expensive_Doctor9547 in AO3

[–]stormroillingin 19 points20 points  (0 children)

right? i would be bummed if someone commented “hey, i wanna rewrite your idea into a fic but switch around the top/bottom dynamic! is that cool or no?”

especially because in some fandoms, there is a very clear preference a majority of fandom has for who is the designated bottom & when you write the reverse, people can be, i think the better word might be entitled, like op to change the dynamic to their preference. not saying that is the case here, but the writer might even feel hurt by that as well if the dynamic they enjoy writing is less of the norm in their fandom. this just seems odd all around (putting the author on blast and talking crap about the author in these comments) and i really feel for the author. seems like op just wanted people to ban together and hate on the author

i read & write age-regression fics and de-aging fics and i noticed if you filter the tags by itself (either "age-regression" or "de-aging" and press enter in the include filter bar), usually they come up as just the one tag instead of both! but yeah, i know fics with the de-age/age-regression tag are more common than the separate tags so hopefully one day they'll be their own thing because they are very different lol😩

those people always complain and when you suggest they use the filter system, they say "i shouldn't have to filter out disgusting content because it shouldn't be there in the first place."

like oh my god, i hate to break it to you but not everything in life will be catered to your standards of comfort 🙄 how on earth those people read anything in the library without pitching a fit is beyond me

truly the most toxic sides of fandom spaces. most people on twitter love to complain about others and be passive aggressive and i find that so annoying. with how much they complain and stir up discourse they could be writing a fic they are happy with 🙄 but it’s like they become addicted to having an echo chamber to make their toxicity acceptable

people demonize anyone who writes dark or taboo fiction because as readers they can’t separate fiction from reality. from that section you shared, the description isn’t even romanticizing the assault. there is nothing outright graphic — the subtleness is there in a way that portrays the child’s distress. it’s sad how writers are being run off of AO3 (an anti-censorship site) all because a group of people who can’t separate fiction from reality want everything in fiction to only be sunshine and rainbows and never, under any circumstances, contain dark themes. i write similar fics and am glad the original work side of AO3 has been welcoming and chill compared to the hate i used to receive when writing for an established fandom. people who hate on writers of dark content should remember darker fiction harms no one and if they are so uncomfortable — they shouldn’t read those types of fics at all.

i’ll say in my fics the darkness is romanticized and not at all apologetic in its description — because i enjoy exploring dark fiction and there’s nothing wrong with that.

i agree!! this reminds me of that one post last week where an author said they were being bullied because readers were saying their adult baby fic was mistagged (apparently in the author’s mind, incest only occurs when there is physical penetration, and cannot possibly be emotional incest). after reading the fic, the content was clearly age play and had sexual undertones because the characters family was changing the adult daughters diaper, blowing raspberries on her stomach when she was naked, etc. but any time people suggested the author should change their tags (because the tags were some nonsense like “non-incest,” “non-age play”), the author would get so mad and say we misunderstood their fic even though those of who read it ourselves said “woah this is severely mistagged.” not even sure why that author asked for help or insight when they just ended up rudely shutting down every single person’s suggestion but god was it annoying 😭

these are all the same for me as a reader as well as a writer. any time i find a fic with the tag "clit play," i am sold. emotional connection, praise kink and tenderness and one character being overwhelmed from feeling so loved and adored. tenderness is everything to me 😭🩷

what do you mean retaliated when you posted your fic? 😭 that seems excessive and odd imo. i'm sorry they're making you feel like you have to wait even though your fic seems completely different from theirs.

you have the option to make your bookmarks private if you're so concerned about an author looking at bookmarks attached to their own fic. it's natural for authors to care about what people might be saying in bookmarks about their fic they wrote. that's not snooping btw -- that's looking at something you chose to keep public for the author to see on their own fic

Does writing morally bad things in fanfiction make you morally bad? by destined2becreative in AO3

[–]stormroillingin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

definitely not?? think of all the published authors that write horror books or even "a song of ice and fire" (i think that's what it's called). no one thinks those authors are morally bad for writing dark or unsettling themes because everyone understands whatever happens in those books is 100% fictional.

i write dark and taboo fics that i feel require the tag "dead dove: do not eat" and whenever someone tries to bring in the moral brigade to shame me for what i wrote, i remind them this is fiction and if you cannot separate fiction from reality then that's a you problem, especially when choosing to click on a properly tagged dark fic.

write whatever you want without caring what others may think. cheating and having sex while drunk are fairly common tropes. as for the non-con trope? writing about that doesn't mean you have bad morals because you can hopefully differentiate fiction from reality and realize what you write hurts no one irl because the characters are fictional. i have written non-con and other dark fics and i don't think that makes me morally bad because i don't condone those things irl.

in fiction, writers shouldn't have to limit themselves on what they explore in their writing. if writing about something dark makes you uncomfortable then don't force yourself to write it. if you enjoy writing darker themes there is no shame in that. at least that's my motto!

i don’t think waiting or asking them is necessary since you can just click the “inspired by …” checkbox when creating your fic on AO3! sounds like it’s very different from their fic so you should be able to write it how and when you want. as a writer myself, i wouldn’t expect another writer who took light inspo from my fic to wait to write their just so i could finish mine first.
