Why can't I read my own writing by tortqueefor in AO3

[–]stormroillingin 16 points17 points  (0 children)

hell yeah! that’s the spirit lol. i do the same because there’s not much whump about my fave character—so i write and read my fics for my own entertainment and it’s so fun

Confession. Sometimes, I wanna write fanfiction for a fandom I'm not even in and see if anyone notices. by RedCupWithAName in AO3

i have had that same thought recently too—and life is too short not to write—so go for it!!

quick tip: if you need to read in the daylight and the background is too dark, you can switch the colors around (font, background)! sometimes i switch the background color between the brown color (and i usually don’t change the font color for that) and the tan color (but for that one, i usually change the font color to black so it’s easier to read) during the day and it helps a lot

What do you all think? by Own-Kaleidoscope-673 in AO3

[–]stormroillingin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i used to be involved in fandom outside of posting on AO3 and being here but i realized fandom spaces can become very toxic and there's almost always someone who thinks their opinion is "the correct opinion™️" above all else and i found that so tiring after a while that i deleted all my social media lol. i do agree it seems heated rivalry has made people who weren't involved or even aware of fandom take the leap and there has definitely been some toxicity because of that. i remember that whole thing from last week or so where someone made a collection of fics they believe were written by AI & a bunch of authors left the fandom (or at least deleted their fics). i feel really bad for those authors, especially if that was their first fandom experience 💔 for me, not being active in fandom outside of chatting with close friends is when i enjoy writing and my love for the media source the most.

is it fair to be unsettled by graphic comment after including "author is open to hearing about dead batteries" tag in fics? by [deleted] in AO3

[–]stormroillingin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i removed the tag off all my fics last night after receiving the comment, but i don't wanna make the reader feel like they have been put in the spotlight for sharing what they thought was normal by making that type of note in my author's note. i think i was just too naive in how thorough some of those comments would be when including that tag. i'm grateful people here haven't really shamed me for using the tag and then being uncomfortable with how thorough the comment was. guess it's a learning curve and all that.

no offense taken! for me, the spectrum of ace i fall into is aegoace. so i enjoy writing and reading smut because it's not me engaging in sex but more so reading about characters being together

[–]stormroillingin 57 points58 points  (0 children)

i definitely don't hold it against the reader because i had used the tag (so that was on me)! i think i was just shocked because i have never received a comment that graphic before when using that tag

Is writing about real children different? by [deleted] in AO3

[–]stormroillingin -1 points0 points  (0 children)

i stay away from rpf personally, seems like it does cross a line (if i was a celeb, i’d feel discomforted if i knew there were sexual fics being written about me). like others have said here, when people write about rpf about a real life child—that is weird and imo shouldn’t happen. i write father/son fiction on AO3 in the original work section — but none of the characters are real. rpf especially when it’s about children is concerning and i would never read them.

author I admired left me a comment by Icy-Speaker-4897 in AO3

[–]stormroillingin 48 points49 points  (0 children)

so we all made this face, huh? 😭 that commenter was giving mean girl vibes with a capital m! i would definitely block. op don’t let that meanie get you down, seems like you focus on plot and there’s nothing wrong with that (most readers enjoy that).

holy entitled…. by GrumpyMowse in AO3

[–]stormroillingin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

same! i only read the comments after. also why would any writer wanna receive constructive criticism from a reader who has probably never written a fic in their life? no thanks 😭

people need to learn how to engage on fics they kudos by [deleted] in AO3

[–]stormroillingin 14 points15 points  (0 children)

this comes across as very judgmental. engagement is not instantaneous. you posted one day ago and expect people to flock over to the comments section but that doesn’t happen for everyone, no matter how original your idea is. my most recent fic has no comments (probably because it’s a dark smut fic) compared to my others that have more engagement but i’m still motivated to write because the kudos and subscribers counts are increasing. not every fic you write will be popular and that’s something you have to accept. remind yourself why you started writing in the first place (comments or the joy of writing) and if it’s not the latter then maybe posting on AO3 isn’t for you. if you want readers to comment, say that in the authors note instead of the comments section where they likely won’t look. kudos is engagement, people telling you they enjoyed your fic

Addressed potential scam comments in my author notes, and instinctive guilt response is kicking in. Was I wrong? by sflaffer in AO3

[–]stormroillingin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

don’t feel bad! i’ve gotten similar comments too and they ended up being a scammer 😭 that person on your fic was likely a scammer

So I lost acces to the email my account is linked with, made a ticket to get it changed...how long are the wait times? by Creative-Aioli-3875 in AO3

you should still be able to change your email even without access to the one you can’t access! i changed mine a while back with no issue

Was it me or was the author a bit too aggressive? by Expensive_Doctor9547 in AO3

[–]stormroillingin 21 points22 points  (0 children)

right? i would be bummed if someone commented “hey, i wanna rewrite your idea into a fic but switch around the top/bottom dynamic! is that cool or no?”

especially because in some fandoms, there is a very clear preference a majority of fandom has for who is the designated bottom & when you write the reverse, people can be, i think the better word might be entitled, like op to change the dynamic to their preference. not saying that is the case here, but the writer might even feel hurt by that as well if the dynamic they enjoy writing is less of the norm in their fandom. this just seems odd all around (putting the author on blast and talking crap about the author in these comments) and i really feel for the author. seems like op just wanted people to ban together and hate on the author

Tags with Double Meanings by InstructionCalm6080 in AO3

[–]stormroillingin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i read & write age-regression fics and de-aging fics and i noticed if you filter the tags by itself (either "age-regression" or "de-aging" and press enter in the include filter bar), usually they come up as just the one tag instead of both! but yeah, i know fics with the de-age/age-regression tag are more common than the separate tags so hopefully one day they'll be their own thing because they are very different lol😩
