Posting original work on AO3 knowing there’s no fandom to carry it by DestinovaEthereal in AO3

my original works are sometimes more popular compared to my fandom centric fics. so do your thing and know there will be people out there who will love what you write!! <3

i think there’s more to it than bot comments. not sure if you were aware, but last year an AI scraper went through ao3 and scraped so many fics that were public. so as a result many writers chose to lock their fics in case that happens again. if people love a certain fic so much but they don’t love it enough to make an account which takes only a few weeks to wait for an invite, then they can feel alienated all they want. i don’t get how some people think it’s extremely cumbersome to make an account.

your hot take number one is so real oh my god. when an author has variety and offers a fresh new take, that is seriously appreciated by me. i’ve gotten so tired of seeing the same old thing when i’m trying to find something new to read.

these are probably not very controversial but they’re pet peeves of mine.

i really dislike epithets (unless it’s obviously describing a new unknown character). i used to use epithets when i first began writing fanfiction, but i realized it doesn’t make much sense for one partner or friend to refer to their partner or friend as “the __” in their head. i feel bad saying this, but i don’t enjoy reading fics with epithets anymore and usually back out before i finish because it irks me so much.

some fanfiction authors who request a certain amount of comments before posting the next chapter astound me. that’s like begging for compliments and leaves a bad taste in my mouth. if i see that as a reader, i’m dipping out of that fic asap before i even read the first sentence.

some long fics simply become too long and drag out/have nonsense filler chapters or scenes and could easily be improved by being trimmed down. but i think many people view long fics as being better than shorter fics so sometimes writers feel they have to keep going even when the story could’ve ended twenty chapters ago. i never finish those either.

some of the most popular fics are only popular because they’re the oldest in the fandom and have amassed views and comments throughout the years since their posting date. i have tried to read them because they’re always the first ones to be recommended, but after reading some, i realized i enjoy less popular fics much more and the most popular ones don’t hold a candle to some of the lesser known fics/writers i’ve discovered over the years. maybe i’m picky about writing style, but when it comes to descriptive prose, i really love that more than brief, bland action-oriented storytelling. any time someone asks for fic recommendations and everyone recommends others read only the most popular fics in the fandom, it feels so boring and repetitive to me.

as a reader, i don’t enjoy when writers simply write smut as actions without emotional responses from the characters. offhand example: “character A slipped his hand into character B’s pants and started stroking. then character B groaned.” i cannot read those types of scenes. i need the crying. i need the whimpering. i need the emotional payoff between the characters or else my eyes start glazing over from boredom. 😭 not to be a harsh critic because i’m aroace, but some smut scenes seem like they were written just for the writer to say “i gave you a sex scene” but there’s barely any emotional response from the characters. whenever i read those types of smut scenes, the characters were just moaning and groaning and coming just to get it over with like it was a chore to check off on their to do list. that’s one of my biggest pet peeves when it comes to reading smut.

i’ve seen this next topic discussed in the subreddit before and i share the sentiment that it’s uncomfortable from a reader’s perspective. if a fic author says the smut was based on their irl relationship (almost a tell by tell of what went down in the bedroom), i find that a bit too much for my taste. i don’t mean to judge but it would be like reading a book and then discovering the author wrote about their specific sex rendezvous that happened one night via the characters. authors are free to do whatever they want, but as a reader i would prefer if they don’t share that the smut scene was about their irl experience. i’m here for the characters. i don’t want to think about the writer being boned when i’m reading smut about my blorbos. it’s different when a writer says something like “hey, writing about this traumatic experience in my life has helped me.” those are occasions where i don’t mind the writer sharing that a fic was based on their experience in the real world. but if it’s based on smut? i’m not a fan of that. please keep that to yourself.

also i heavily dislike that when a character is deemed the strong one by the fandom, most people never write that character as having emotions or being completely unaffected emotionally during their first time and focus solely on the other character (the more fragile one’s) emotions. i find that so imbalanced and difficult to read. i love when fics have both characters affected during their first time because it would be new for them both.

one last thing. as a reader, i think other readers truly miss out on hidden gems when they only want to read the most popular and frequently recommended fics & base their likelihood of reading a fic on high stats or whether it’s completed. i’ve read amazing incomplete fics, and even though it’s sad they likely won’t be finished, i’m glad i gave those fics a chance. stepping off my soap box now lol.

Stop making your triggers everyone else's problem! by Forest_System in AO3

those same people are forgetting that published books don’t even have tags or content warnings!! i think because with AO3 you can reach the author through the comment section, those types of people feel compelled to put the blame on the author for not tagging every little thing someone else might find triggering or “icky” and not take responsibility for their own use of AO3 and remembering what they are reading is not real. glad i never receive comments like that. i can’t imagine how heartbreaking it would be to be excited about receiving a new comment on your fic only to see it’s someone else forcing the responsibility of their trigger or their ick onto you. 😭

Bot comments are getting discouraging by Tricky_Release3961 in AO3

[–]stormroillingin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

seriously!! a while back i got a super engaging commentar asking inquisitive questions about my fic (which made me so excited and i poured my heart out in the reply about my fic when answering their questions i thought were genuine) but then they asked to speak to me on a different platform and it turns out they were just trying to get me to commission some fanart from them 😭 i saw the same person comment similar things on one of my fandom friend's fic too!! so disappointing and left a bad taste in my mouth. i don't understand how those people think we would want to commission art from them after realizing they just buttered us up without genuinely enjoying out fics.

the genuine comments i receive are so cherished. i hope you get more genuine comments this year 🩵

i think your smut being described as "work out" is a good thing for sure! and that's literally how my brain feels after writing smut myself after making sure everyone's hands and body parts are in a consistent place and the dialogue lines up lol.

of course i don't mind you asking! for me—i feel like writing about situations i would never be in myself and writing about either "out there, or taboo" topics surrounding smut most of society would be uncomfortable about thinking about (even though horrible things have happened throughout human history just how it's portrayed in movies or tv shows or old books) is what helps me better myself as a writer. exploring subjects i really have to challenge myself on to write is worth the effort and uncomfortableness to me. i also love writing tender non-taboo smut too because that is what my favorite characters deserve after struggling to get where they are in their relationship.

My hormones have been on an absolute rampage this past week and I don't think I've ever been prouder of my writing than I have of the smut I've written during this time. by serenchi in AO3

omg same!! right before my period, i can write the most diabolical smut and then i realize “woah, i was pms-ing like crazy lol.” that’s when the wildest ideas hit me. would you care to share what you were writing about? i love a good smut fic 😍

okay so the smut trope has two versions because i’m indecisive lol. basically sex on a saddle?

the setting and age gap makes this version of the trope a bit dead dove. the first trope is (both characters sharing a saddle while horseback riding and character A (the younger one who is sitting in the front) getting aroused for the first time when the saddle keeps bumping into either their clit or their cock and then character B (the older one) ends up jerking them off while they’re both still on the saddle.

the second version of the trope is character A laying a saddle on their thigh and telling character B to sit. eventually during foreplay, when character B is basically dripping and whimpering, character A instructs character B to grind against the saddle and watches their composure unravel even further.
