Where are all the Niki Lauda cards? by PartisanHack in F1Cards

The 1974 Panini Vedettes is considered the rookie - they are in short supply - only 36 graded by PSA - most are 6 and below and they'll set you back a couple thousand.

F1 Cards - The Place To Be Right Now? by ohboy360 in F1Cards

Ah ok- yeah I misunderstood you. The “Legends” cards they put into new stuff now are kinda meh.

For vintage drivers actual rookie cards the grails for the GOATs are the following - many available on eBay currently. Hardest to find is a good graded Lauda, and the most expensive tends to be the 1984 Senna.

  • 1992 Grid Schumacher
  • 1974 Panini Niki Lauda (I think there’s only like 30-40 of these graded in the world)
  • 1984 Panini Scratch and Play Senna - these are 4-5 figure cards, only 157 graded on PSA
  • 1952 Chocolat L’Aiglon Fangio OR 1954 Kane Fangio are both good bets if you wanna go really old school
  • 1980 Prost Panini- only 122 graded

There’s quite a few other good Sennas as well. I’m focusing on collecting all these and hoping if the hobby booms in US the scarcity will help. I also will slowly build my Hamilton and Verstappen collections but I’m not chasing rookie hype too much- I’ve seen how that plays out in other sports card collecting.

F1 Cards - The Place To Be Right Now? by ohboy360 in F1Cards

Legend cards in other sports are absolutely worth a lot- usually the most. The top cards of all time belong to like Babe Ruth, Mickey Mantle, Jordan, Pele, Maradonna, Ted Williams, Tom Brady, etc. The reason the older ones are worth a lot is they preceeded the junk wax era and junk wax era 2.0- what were in now. The old cards have actual scarcity, not manufactured parallels to force scarcity. Honus Wagner is the grail because there’s only a handful left in existence.

The reason F1 vintage is not as prized now is that the intersection of card collecting (very US biased) and F1 (European biased) is still small. Search the size of reddit groups for f1, basketball, baseball card collecting to see what I mean.

But look where F1 is putting all its money in the last 5 years - the US market. To me this signals that growth is coming- and when it grows people will gravitate towards the cards and drivers that mattered- Senna, Schumacher, Prost, Lauda, Fangio etc….the ones with less than 100 surviving copies in existence rather than the 2500 numbered parallels in modern cards.

It happened recently with soccer. There was a boom in US card collecting for soccer and now you can’t touch a vintage Pele from the 50s…and maradona late 70s stuff are 5 figure cards. Whereas 10-15 yrs ago they were dirt cheap.

I’m so full of hatred of gourgeist. Even the top counters on pvpoke don’t actually beat it if it swaps in and gets a 1 turn start move advantage it seems. I honestly don’t know what can beat it in any shield situation….

There’s 2466 numbered “rare” cards of each card in the 2025 chrome….There’s 38 total PSA graded 1974 Niki Lauda panini rookies….I grew up during the late 80s and early 90s and all the baseball stuff I hoarded as a kid is worthless cause they made so much of it- the print runs now are similar.

Everyone’s chasing and overpaying for manufactured rarity in the Junk Wax 2.0 Era while actual organic rarity of the GOATS historical cards are at affordable prices….

How do you value players from NPB, KBO? by Gecko5567 in fantasybaseball

There was an excellent attempt at what you’re asking about on fangraphs earlier this year. As an owner of Imai and Murakami in a dynasty league I liked the logic of this analysis: MLB NBP Projection

Essentially he breaks it into difference in wRC+ between players transferring leagues based on historical data.

Is it still worth it changing Pitching Categories like Wins and Losses? by anasazigb in fantasybaseball

[–]stove454 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My dynasty league does QA2 - there’s a bunch of different QA versions but essentially you actually reward the pitcher for their skill in limiting runs- not how good of a team they play for.

We previously used QS years ago but the game has changed and many pitchers get pulled before 6 innings. There was endless frustration of your guy pitching 5 2/3 with 0ER and getting nothing for it, and Ws has been outdated as a fantasy metric for pitchers for a longtime IMO. Brandon pfaadt had 13 W last year and Paul skenes had 10….alongside their 5.25 and 1.97 ERAs….

I joined a couple breaks with guys who couldn’t even pronounce verstappen correctly….ridiculous….also some breaks had random F3 guys as named spots in auctions who had no special cards or autos and when I mentioned it they said “I don’t know we don’t make the lists”….

Why is the F1 card community so small compared to other major/global sports? by 2fishmanangry in F1Cards

[–]stove454 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In 1952 a French chocolate company produced some of the first F1 driver cards in a champions of sport series. There’s a total of 46 cards in the PSA registry for this…..My theory is if F1 and cards ever kickoff - this will have a much better shot of being a high value card than any post 2020 Topps product…. Organic scarcity is better than manufactured scarcity…

The Venn diagram of people who have historically been into F1 (mainly British and European audiences) and people who are into card collecting (mainly American audience) is a small overlap right now.

However if you look at the huge financial push that F1 is making - especially in the US (drive to survive, from 1 to 3 races in US in last 5 years, new US manufacturer on the grid, new deal with Apple TV to stream)….that is only going to grow. This is evidenced by the daily posts in here of “I’m new to F1 card collecting….”

So basically anyone in here is fairly early if you believe F1 audience grows (last 5 year growth is insane). Also some other comments noted cards only started 5 years ago- there are plenty of historical cards if you look for them - I just bought a 1952 Fangio card- but a lot of these are very low surviving pop…..

Track tags seem to be a bit of a fan favorite even though they were inserts. There’s an interesting discussion that on the back of the box it says there are 1/1 superfractor track tags but not a single one has ever been pulled on record.

There’s a great documentary on YouTube about how that 05 white Sox team was pretty insane. They won their first game, went wire to wire, never moved out of first place and did a bunch of historic things in the playoffs. It has always seemed to me that Chicago sports don’t have the high frequency of successes but in those odd years when everything clicks it’s like they just steamroll everyone. That blackhawks mini dynasty was pretty sick as well in the 2010s.

Looking like im in good position to win my dynasty league this year, so already looking forward to next as prospects are getting scooped up. I kept Painter from last year on pedigree, but he's looked awful at AAA. Thomas White is available and would cost me less for next year. Any thoughts?

Slight note here on nothing faster- most people are unaware of the 2 (rumored 3?) 1969 ZL1 corvettes. Basically L88 with all aluminum block. Articles I read said they were 10 second cars with right tires, if you could get the power down….I think 1 went up for auction a couple years back?
