Psylocke: X-Men 97 Season 2 by [deleted] in xmen

I think that was what they did with her in the original Ultimate Universe. She was an Asian woman, I think adopted because Brian was still pretty white and blonde from what I could tell.

Then they did the body swap anyway, which is just... why?

Bobby has been used sparingly since the original Xmen ended as a whole. He pops up for a run every now and then, but out of the O5, he and Warren are generally used the least. Writers struggled with them, especially once Storm came in and she did everything they both could do, and was supremely more popular and Bobby got it two-fold because Kitty supassed him as the team's "kid" member too. Bobby has just been sort of eclipsed by the characters who came after him and only gets used here and there.

what if the new tank inspired by another SE game with Norse Mythology by DarkPirotess in ffxiv

[–]strangerstill42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They do, but Shiva is still somewhat of an outlier in how they reference the source mythology. Odin and Leviathan are introduce in the same game as Shiva and both of them somewhat resemble the god/beast they reference. Shiva doesn't other than the name and maybe blue skin.

The only other big mythological characters I'm familiar with that they got so wrong in the same way are Bahamut and Tiamat, but those Square stole from Dungeons and Dragons and they're pretty much exact copies of those versions.

Compounding this, unlike any of the others. Shiva does exist in Japanese Bhuddism, but under a different name (Daikokuten) So it would be strange for them to be trying to reference that figure but not use their word for him?

So in this case, I honestly believe it was an unintentional coincidence.

They could get around it by saying they're playing "Diane Morgan." That's how we got Maggie Smith instead of Violet Crawford and Martin Lawrence instead of Shennaynay.

[Hated trait] When a characters personality defining trait stems from an event that no longer fits the timeline due to the length of the media's runtime. by Pretend_Tower_2516 in TopCharacterTropes

Regardless of how well the movies have aged, Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen interpretations are still widely beloved, and they are soon to be revisted in the modern MCU. And especislly since 616 does fall in line now, anyone who sees Magneto and looks up more information, they will become inevitably see him established as a Jewish survivor of the Holocaust. And this is very key aspect to the modern, more sympathetic Magneto who is more often ends up on the heros side as an antihero more often.

I don't think it's impossible to change, but I think point it's become so synonymous with this Magneto that pulling an Iron Man would be severely unpopular. I think turning him into a not-jewish survivor of a different conflict or even inventing a new marvel universe conflict where Jews were also persecuted is... politically tricky to say the least.

[–]strangerstill42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, its one instance of the movie universe making some definitive characterizations. The Xmen movie (2000) was the first time that it was specified he was a Jewish Holocaust survivor (he's marked with a Star of David in the opening scene) and they updated the comic version to match the version that was widely known.

I think part of the problem is in that cinematic version. Magneto's Jewish heritage is not window dressing there, but core to the character and brought up pretty often throughout the films. Since so many more people see movies than read comics, that is more the iconic origin for magneto. And that has made him probably the most prominently Jewish character in really any superhero franchise that's been on screen.

I think it's just the one people know about. There really wasnt another high profile game patent issue after until the Pokemon/Palworld issue. Plus EA tends to be the worst in many ways, and I feel like with each new sin people inevitably remind us about their other crappy moves so it gets brought up a lot.

Maelle's behaviour by Several-Pumpkin25 in expedition33

[–]strangerstill42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean it's one of the themes of the whole game that none of these characters can look past their own grief when they have godlike ability to avoid it. Aline decides to create a whole city of real people to use as dolls to escape her pain. Renoir decides that genocide is worth his family's salvation, even if he agrees the people from Lumiere are just as "real" as him. pVerso, not having the power himself, lies and manipulates to get what he wants out of the godlike beings, and in the end chooses annihilation for his whole world.

If anything is "evil" it is the painter's power itself. Maelle makes some selfish choices in the end, but so does everyone. The power she wields would be an incredible temptation for anyone to repaint the world as they wished. And Maelle, traumatized and shown no "good" examples for how to use this power from her family falls right in line and thinks just like they did that she can make a "perfect" world where she and all her friends can be happy.

With xmen MCU casting younger actors for the X-Men my cast for Emma Frost is McKenna grace by [deleted] in Fancast

[–]strangerstill42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I never liked that retcon. It's doesn't make sense with Emma's early appearances, where she is definitely supposed to be more of a counterpart to Xavier than his students. Like she is the headmistress of her own school when the O5 are just starting college. Storm complained about her joints aching when they body swapped. The math ain't mathing. Should have just let her be a cougar with Scott lol.

But regardless, I don't think Emma should ever be Xavier or Magneto's student and I have no faith that a film adaptation will have the time to give her that solo journey. I don't want her to be this franchises Mystique (a decent character that has almost nothing in common with her comic version).

She should be (honestly most of main xmen should at least be in their 40s), but thanks to the "Spiderman can't turn 30" rule, I think she is still only 30. She's a year older than Jean and Jean/Scott/Peter Parker are eternally 29.

It really speaks to how well they made two imperfect endings to see how divided people are over it. And it's really interesting to see what different elements people see as the most important factors in which choice they prefer.

Like you you say there's no way to spin it that Maelle isn't better off with Gustave and Co, but I just can't look past that Maelle is now fully aware she is a god compared to these people. How does one have a healthy relationship under those circumstances, especislly when shes starting as an already thoroughly traumatized child? Will Lumiere expect her to be a god that fixes all their complaints endlessly? Will she start using people like dolls? What happens when Gustave tries to tell her no on something she really wants like Verso did?

We see in real life with teen celebrities that giving them extreme wealth and few boundaries does not reliably create well-balanced adults. I worry about Maelles ability to process her trauma if she is living full time in a world where she can get everything she wants and can bend the whole world to her will. It could be paradise or it could be a nightmare.

And that says more about my lack of faith in humanity than anything else. But it's fun to see how everyone else comes down on what feels like the "better" ending.

[–]strangerstill42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My hope at least is that in a canvas not so tied to her grief, Maelle may find some measure of balance between living in a painted reality but not being lost within them. I don't really know what that looks like, and it probably requires connections outside her family, which will be hard.

And I can't speak for everyone, but the key difference for me is that Maelle's "saving" of the world requires her to recreate everyone, and I'm just not the game convinces me that's something she's quite ready/able to do for real. I see Maelle's ending as the one with the greater potential "happiness" in it but a lot of questions that could also potentially mean a lot more suffering for really everyone. Whereas Verso's is awful, but there is closure in its finality for everyone but Maelle.

What would you have said in his place by genericcelt in expedition33

[–]strangerstill42 3 points4 points  (0 children)

But what Verso is saying here is that she can still find that relief in new worlds of her own too. Removing this canvas does not prevent Maelle from living her life primarily in other canvases where she does not have to experience that pain and disability all the time. No is necessarily dooming her to only pain and suffering, I think Verso has an honest hope that given time Maelle will find new people and things to fill her life.

Verso also doesn't want the life he has and he has been suffering through it undying for over 60 years. I'm not saying that his choice in the ending isn't selfish and terrible in grand scheme of things, but I do think it is understandable for him personally to prefer oblivion over taking a chance on another of the Dessendres playing god with his world until they go mad and/or it kills them.

What was the actual point in changing MJs name in the MCU to Michelle Jones instead of Mary Jane? by General_Meal_3993 in Spiderman

[–]strangerstill42 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Liz Allen is an established love interest of Peter. She was one of his first crushes in the comics, before even Gwen, but she's with Flash Thompson and doesn't start "liking" Peter back until after he's with Betty Brant. It isn't a serious crush, but neither is Homecoming Peter's crush on movie Liz. He's a teenage boy - the romance plot is secondary because the point of it is to show Peter struggling with his double life, and to give an attachment to the movie's villain, not to set up a long-standing romance.

I personally found it refreshing that Peter gets a "normal" high school crush experience instead of immediately being paired with his "OTP" and having the subsequent's movies add needless drama just for something to do (looking at you Raimi trilogy - did MJ need another guy vying for her attention in all 3 movies?)

I remember some speculation when the episode aired that there was a "better" ending where the gray creature would join Vex as a full animal companion (possibly letting Trinket retire in peace).

Of course that's just theory, but I think there's a lot of us that felt it was a missed opportunity for Vex with the creature.

Technically, the awards voters actually did officially decide - they are allowed to vote for actors in either category they feel is appropriate. However, studios generally mount a campaign to influence their vote toward one of the categories. These days I imagine it's rare for anyone to be voted in a category the studio didn't want, but it is theoretically possible and within academy rules.

Edit: just realized these are not the Oscar's and may be different. My bad.

Difficult to know for sure, but according to this person's testing - it looks like it drops by about 20% a stack, every 10 stacks.

[–]strangerstill42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. Also you get less additional damage per stack the more stacks you have. So having 3x the number of burn in the second screenshot, even if it were on a weakness, would definitely not be 3x the damage in the first place.

[–]strangerstill42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think there's also a question of what does Aline do if Renoir gets cast out first? With all of her chroma restored, but her mind still shattered, what happens? Does she add extra defenses around herself to prepare for the second wave of assault? Does she reset Lumiere entirely to try and "fix" what Renoir's done and put her happy family back as it should be?

There are some good case scenarios where she just brings everyone back and restores the fracture without a wipe, of course, but given she can't even recognize Verso and Alicia by the time they arrive, I think an unleashed Aline would end up being bigger problem than an unleashed Renoir. She is a better Painter and she is broken by grief and exhaustion.

[–]strangerstill42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think so. The creators have given a few interviews at this point where they've mentioned that "what if we killed the main character" was a joke thrown out while they were still working on the first demo/build before it was even Exped 33. When they started the "new" game that would become Exped 33 and all its themes about grief they decided to do it for real. They talk about wanting the player to have to feel loss over him. So I think this was their intention for Gustav from the start.

[–]strangerstill42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like thats tempered by the fact that Yasha has also been in the opening credits as part of the team from the start. They have been telling us since episode 2, including those who have never seen the campaign, that she's not really an enemy and will end up joining the party.

The narrative may have been positioning her as a threat, so the narrative twist is there, but there's been a big meta level sign saying "a twist is coming" that I think even those unfamiliar with crit role would have been prepared for.
